We're in 1965, midway through the 1960s, and of course a very significant year for me.
2 January 1965:
1 ( 1 ) Ferry Across The Mersey - Gerry & The Pacemakers < 2nd week at #1 > 2 ( -- ) You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' - Righteous Brothers 3 ( 2 ) I Feel Fine - Beatles (#1[2]) 4 ( 5 ) Yeh Yeh - Georgie Fame 5 ( 3 ) Girl Don't Come - Sandie Shaw (#2[1]) 6 ( 8 ) Love Potion No.9 - Searchers 7 ( 16 ) Keep Searchin' (We'll Follow The Sun) - Del Shannon 8 ( 6 ) She's A Woman - Beatles (#5) 9 ( 4 ) Blue Christmas - Elvis Presley (#4) 10 ( 10 ) How Sweet It Is - Marvin Gaye
11 ( 12 ) I Easily Could Fall - Cliff Richard 12 ( 13 ) Oh No Not My Baby - Maxine Brown 13 ( 17 ) Too Many Fish In The Sea - Marvelettes 14 ( 9 ) Twinkle - Terry (#3) 15 ( 7 ) Christmas Will Be Just Another Lonely Day - Brenda Lee (#7) 16 ( 15 ) Go Now - Moody Blues (#15) 17 ( 20 ) Willow Weep For Me - Chad & Jeremy 18 ( 11 ) Downtown - Petula Clark (#1[3]) 19 ( 26 ) Choc Ice - Long And The Short 20 ( -- ) Et Meme - Francoise Hardy
21 ( 14 ) Saturday Night At The Movies - Drifters (#6) 22 ( -- ) Thou Shalt Not Steal - Dick And DeeDee 23 ( 22 ) Like A Child - Julie Rogers (#22) 24 ( 18 ) Genie With The Light Brown Lamp - Shadows (#11) 25 ( 23 ) Somewhere - PJ Proby (#23) 26 ( 25 ) What Have They Done To The Rain - Searchers (#25) 27 ( 19 ) March Of The Mods - Joe Loss Orchestra (#2[2]) 28 ( 24 ) Gone Gone Gone - Everly Brothers (#16) 29 ( 21 ) Walking In The Rain - Ronettes (#7) 30 ( 29 ) Goin' Out Of My Head - Little Anthony & The Imperials (#19)
-- ( 27 ) Come See About Me - Supremes (#11) -- ( 28 ) Baby I Need Your Loving - Fourmost (#12) -- ( 30 ) I'm Gonna Be Strong - Gene Pitney (#3)
Another quiet week for the number of songs entering, but a massive entry at #2. A song written by Barry Mann (we've come across him before) with Cynthia Weil and produced by Phil Spector (seemingly the greatest producer of this era, potentially even better than George Martin) and performed by a duo who are not brothers and whose names are Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield, the former singing with a very deep baritone voice.

9 January 1965:
1 ( 2 ) You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' - Righteous Brothers < 1st #1 > 2 ( 1 ) Ferry Across The Mersey - Gerry & The Pacemakers (#1[2]) 3 ( 4 ) Yeh Yeh - Georgie Fame 4 ( 7 ) Keep Searchin' (We'll Follow The Sun) - Del Shannon 5 ( 3 ) I Feel Fine - Beatles (#1[2]) 6 ( 6 ) Love Potion No.9 - Searchers 7 ( 5 ) Girl Don't Come - Sandie Shaw (#2[1]) 8 ( -- ) Baby Please Don't Go - Them 9 ( 13 ) Too Many Fish In The Sea - Marvelettes 10 ( 10 ) How Sweet It Is - Marvin Gaye
11 ( 8 ) She's A Woman - Beatles (#5) 12 ( 11 ) I Easily Could Fall - Cliff Richard (#11) 13 ( 20 ) Et Meme - Francoise Hardy 14 ( 12 ) Oh No Not My Baby - Maxine Brown (#12) 15 ( 22 ) Thou Shalt Not Steal - Dick And DeeDee 16 ( 19 ) Choc Ice - Long And The Short 17 ( 17 ) Willow Weep For Me - Chad & Jeremy 18 ( 9 ) Blue Christmas - Elvis Presley (#4) 19 ( -- ) I'll Never Find Another You - Seekers 20 ( 16 ) Go Now - Moody Blues (#15)
21 ( 14 ) Twinkle - Terry (#3) 22 ( -- ) Let The Sun Shine In - Peddlers 23 ( 23 ) Like A Child - Julie Rogers (#22) 24 ( 18 ) Downtown - Petula Clark (#1[3]) 25 ( -- ) I'll Be There - Gerry & The Pacemakers 26 ( 15 ) Christmas Will Be Just Another Lonely Day - Brenda Lee (#7) 27 ( 26 ) What Have They Done To The Rain - Searchers (#25) 28 ( 25 ) Somewhere - PJ Proby (#23) 29 ( 21 ) Saturday Night At The Movies - Drifters (#6) 30 ( -- ) Hold What You've Got - Joe Tex
-- ( 24 ) Genie With The Light Brown Lamp - Shadows (#11) -- ( 27 ) March Of The Mods - Joe Loss Orchestra (#2[2]) -- ( 28 ) Gone Gone Gone - Everly Brothers (#16) -- ( 29 ) Walking In The Rain - Ronettes (#7) -- ( 30 ) Goin' Out Of My Head - Little Anthony & The Imperials (#19)
No surprise really at the top. Them features Van Morrison on vocals. The Seekers enter with yet another song that got to #1 in the UK, whilst the Peddlers was one of those 1 week at #50 hits. Gerry & The Pacemakers compensate for losing the #1 by getting another one in the chart, albeit low down so won't match the feat of the last one, and Joe Tex gets a slow ballad in the lowest rung here. If it drops out next week, well maybe in 12 years he'll have another hit..

My # 1s from early 1965 : 16.01 : Seekers - I'll Never Find Another You (1 week) 23.01 : Sue Thompson - Paper Tiger (3 weeks) 13.02 : Babbity Blue - Don't Make Me (Fall In Love With You) (3 weeks) 06.03 : Kathy Kirby - I Belong (7 weeks) (My favourite single, released in UK from 1965) 24.04 : Jackie Trent - Where Are You Now, My Love ? (3 weeks)
France Gall was # 1 in my Eurovision ranking - 1965, but only UK released singles were allowed in my old # 1s retrospective.
Today it should be something like 4 weeks at # 1 for France and 3 weeks at # 1 for Kathy.

A comfortable 4th week on top for the Righteous Brothers, but the fifth won't be so comfortable as the classic Temptations hit has entered at a high position of #4.

6 February 1965:

-- ( -- ) Laugh Laugh - Beau Brummels -- ( -- ) Long After Tonight Is All Over - Jimmy Radcliffe -- ( -- ) Twine Time - Alvin Cash & The Crawlers
No change at #1, perhaps surprisingly, as the Righteous Brothers keep out the Temptations. (In the UK, "My Girl" was eventually a #2 kept out by Shakespear's Sisters' long-running #1 "Stay").
A great week for new hits.

I am potentially going to increase this to a top 40 on 20th February. I only have 9 new songs for 13th February so that won't be possible, although I could allow the increase to happen over 2 weeks, increasing to 35 for one week.
In the modern era the chart was increased from 30 to 40 in 1999.

Ok, I did a top 35.
13 February 1965:
1 ( 1 ) You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' - Righteous Brothers < 6th week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) My Girl - Temptations 3 ( -- ) It's Not Unusual - Tom Jones 4 ( 3 ) The In Crowd - Dobie Gray (#3) 5 ( 7 ) Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood - Animals 6 ( 9 ) The Boy From New York City - Ad Libs 7 ( 13 ) Funny How Love Can Be - Ivy League 8 ( 8 ) Bye Bye Baby (Baby Goodbye) - Four Seasons 9 ( 6 ) Shake - Sam Cooke (#6) 10 ( 4 ) Baby Please Don't Go - Them (#2[2])
11 ( 15 ) Game Of Love - Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders 12 ( 5 ) Come Tomorrow - Manfred Mann (#3) 13 ( -- ) A Windmill In Old Amsterdam - Ronnie Hilton 14 ( -- ) The Birds And The Bees - Jewel Akens 15 ( 14 ) Heart Of Stone - Rolling Stones (#14) 16 ( 10 ) Tired Of Waiting For You - Kinks (#10) 17 ( -- ) King Of The Road - Roger Miller 18 ( 22 ) Thanks A Lot - Brenda Lee 19 ( 20 ) Tell Her No - Zombies 20 ( 16 ) Paper Tiger - Sue Thompson (#16)
21 ( 12 ) Too Many Fish In The Sea - Marvelettes (#6) 22 ( 11 ) Ferry Across The Mersey - Gerry & The Pacemakers (#1[2]) 23 ( 23 ) Jolly Green Giant - Kingsmen 24 ( 21 ) What In The World's Come Over You - Rockin' Berries (#21) 25 ( -- ) Goodnight - Roy Orbison 26 ( 18 ) Promised Land - Chuck Berry (#11) 27 ( 19 ) I'll Never Find Another You - Seekers (#9) 28 ( 17 ) Yeh Yeh - Georgie Fame (#3) 29 ( 25 ) You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You - Dean Martin (#24) 30 ( -- ) Lemon Tree - Trini Lopez
31 ( 24 ) Et Meme - Francoise Hardy (#10) 32 ( -- ) Don't Make Me (Fall In Love With You) - Babbity Blue 33 ( 27 ) The Name Game - Shirley Ellis (#17) 34 ( -- ) Stop Feeling Sorry For Yourself - Adam Faith 35 ( 28 ) Getting Mighty Crowded - Betty Everett (#18)
-- ( 26 ) Love Potion No.9 - Searchers (#6) -- ( 29 ) Let The Sun Shine In - Peddlers (#13) -- ( 30 ) Keep Searchin' (We'll Follow The Sun) - Del Shannon (#4)
-- ( -- ) Mary Anne - Shadows
This increase has benefitted mostly Babbity Blue and Adam Faith who get entries. Next week I have 11 songs on the list and the chart will increase to a top 40, albeit when I play old (retro) charts I am rarely interested in anything lower than a top 20.
A new entry at #3 for Tom Jones looking to finally knock the Righteous Brothers off #1. He's had many hits in the modern era, including that wonderful cover of "Kiss" which entered high and I thought might get to #1 but didn't quite.
This is Ronnie Hilton's final hit single. He had a #1 with "No Other Love" and now seems to be making hits aimed at kids, and I certainly heard a lot of this one growing up. Contains the wonderful couplet "the windmill had christenings when no one was listening".
The multiplication game is further added to by the next hit by Jewel Akens.

The chart, as stated, is now a top 40. The entries still come from the UK top 50 and US top 30, but as from 3rd April they come from the US top 40.

Which song had the most weeks at # 1 in your chart (not only in retro) ?
|
|
|
Post by Earl Purple on May 18, 2016 12:41:37 GMT 1
I have a maximum limit of 7 weeks for any number ones. That has been achieved a few times, most recently earlier in 2016, but has not yet been achieved in retro.
"You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" is the 4th single to manage 6 weeks. The others were:
Pineapple Princess - Annette Funicello Stranger On The Shore - (Mr) Acker Bilk It's Over - Roy Orbison.
I didn't mention it but Roy Orbison had the top 2 of 1964 but also had the best second-placed hit in 1961. Elvis had the best second-placed hit in both 1960 and 1962.
I think the Beatles did in 1963 but would have to look it up. And of course it's an achievement they are likely to repeat.

I have a maximum limit of 7 weeks for any number ones. Why you introduced this limit ? I'm not a huge fan of the one song's domination too, but sometimes the competition for # 1 is very weak. In the retrospective charts (1964-2005) I had two songs with 10 weeks at # 1.

A high entry for Twinkle with a song that pretty much passed me by in 1984 when I covered this period on Jimmy Savile's Old recorD Club, assuming he played it. But then a few years later the Smiths covered it and I got very familiar with that version. Only 16 and so much talent, yet she would never have any more hits. She died last year, aged 66.
The Beatles meanwhile charge into the chart with a song that was a US #1.
Unit Four Plus Two (actually Unit 4+2 on the covers) had a hit last year with "Green Fields" that got to #3 on this chart but virtually flopped in the UK. So if this gets to #1 in the UK.. well it's only the 3rd highest entry so probably not...
Two versions of Can't You Hear My Heartbeat. I charted Herman's Hermits' version.

The two highest entries were the songs at UK #1 and US #1 on the date I was born. Will either of them be #1 on here?

Young Twinkle remains on top holding off the Beatles and the Stones.. Can she keep this up? Meanwhile, yet another UK #1 enters down at #24. 1965 had a very high turnover of #1s. The highest entry though is some instrumental pop.

The Rolling Stones get their first NM #1. "The Last Time" was the UK #1 on the week I was born and unlike most of the #1s at the time, remained on top for 3 weeks (loads of one-week #1s around that time, and their first two #1s were both only one top for one week but this one managed 3 weeks).
Whether it can manage any more weeks here would appear to depend on whether they can keep out the classic rock track by the Yardbirds, a song written by Graham Gouldman (later of 10cc). Eric Clapton plays lead guitar on it. Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page were also members of the band. It appears Jeff Beck joined around this time and took over from Eric Clapton and doesn't play on this track. In any case, a piece of classic rock and will be chasing the Rolling Stones all the way for my birth-date number one. (Speaking of Jeff Beck, he also recorded the song immediately below this one in the chart, together with Rod Stewart).

comparing this to raliverpool's chart of this week:
1 Rolling Stones - The Last Time (3wks 31-3-1) 2 Beatles - Eight Days A Week (4wks 10-4-2-2) 3 Tom Jones - It's Not Unusual (6wks 28-16-9-3-1-3) 4 Supremes - Stop! In The Name Of Love (3wks 19-8-4) 5 Bobby Goldsboro - Little Things (5wks 26-15-10-7-5) 6 Impressions - People Get Ready (3wks 30-14-6)
so the same song at #1 (also climbing from #3), same song at #6, also charting the Beatles high with a peak of #2 and Tom Jones has come down from #1 but by now he's dropped further in mine. Supremes peaked at #5 in mine but Bobby Goldsboro's the odd one out in his chart, only a #26 peak in mine, whilst Twinkle didn't make such an impact in his. He has the Yardbirds entering at a lowly #35 but it does leap to #10 the following week and eventually make it to #1.

"The race is on" as the song at #9 goes. (Dave Edmunds released a version with the Stray Cats in 1981. It only peaked at #34 and wasn't on any of the TOTP re-runs).
The race for #1 is now 3-way, however I will say that this week's chart and not next week's is my official birthday chart. There was another version of "Here Comes The Night" that I rejected last year. Lulu's version spent one week in the UK chart at #50. The version in the chart now has Van Morrison on lead vocals.
We also see more fun by the Barron Knights, another Kinks hit and a debut for Donovan.

I have finally arrived. Van Morrison and Them swap with the Rolling Stones, leaving the Yardbirds high and dry at #2.
In these posts I also write about other affairs going on at the time, and so I will mention at this point what is happening in the USA, and in particular in Vietnam. The US are increasing the deploying of troops, have just sent about 3,500 ground troops and will be deploying up to 200,000 during the year of 1965.
So far this is not showing in the music that is charting. We are still in the period of the "British Invasion" but that is not showing in the new entries of this week, all of which come from Americans. The highest is by a song later covered by the Belle Stars, and there's another song they covered on the following playlist.
The song that enters at #12 appears to have "inspired" (or be sampled by) the Fine Young Cannibals in their 1989 hit "Good Thing".
