Ok,: some of the sporting winners, and I may fill some more in tomorrow.
I'll start with the English football league, and in the 6th years of the 1960s we have a 6th winner. This time Manchester United claimed the crown, led by Sir Matt Busby, with Bobby Charlton in the team. Of course had it not been for the Munich air crash they would probably have won more earlier in the decade.
It was fairly close though. Leeds were second with the same number of points and a worse goal average (and a lower goal difference too).
In Scotland, it went down to the final game when Kilmarnock beat Hearts 2-0 at Tynecastle to snatch it on goal-average and their goal-difference was worse. Hearts scored a lot more goals in the season but also conceded more, in particular a shock 7-1 defeat to Dundee. So as in 1986 they were undone on the last day of the season, with the same number of points (50 that season too) same as the winners, and were undone by Dundee...
Liverpool only finished a disappointing 7th in the league but they did win the FA Cup, with Leeds runners up in that too, the final score 2-1 Chelsea won the league cup, beating Leicester in the final, 3-2 on aggregate, as the final was a two-legged tie back then.
In Scotland it was old-firm in the cups. Celtic beat Dunfermline in the Scottish Cup, Rangers beat Celtic in the Scottish League Cup.
In the European Cup, Inter Milan beat Benfica in the final.
With some great players who went on to be world cup stars, West Ham brought home the cup-winners cup beating 1860 Munich 2-0 in a Wembley final. Ferencvaros won the Fairs cup (which later because the UEFA Cup and now the Europa League).
In tennis, at Wimbledon it was Australians ruling the way. Roy Emerson for the men and Margaret Court for the women.
In American football it was the Buffalo Bills (American Football League) and Green Bay Packers (NFL) In the world series of baseball, the LA Dodgers were successful against the Minnesota Twins, 4 games to 3.

-- ( -- ) Paradise - Frank Ifield
The quality of the entries is slowing down a bit now. There is a big one next week but Bob Dylan looks set to get at least a second week unlike the 3 number ones before him. Note that I have never had 3 consecutive one-week #1s in the modern era, although there was a time when there were but the 2nd of those then returned to #1.

So for the first time in about a month there isn't a new number one. The top 6 actually remain the same other than a couple of switches. Last week's highest entry climbs to #7 and the highest this week enters at #8.
Eve Of Destruction was written with the Byrds in mind, and was categorised as "Dylan-esque" although Bob Dylan did not write that song. Political in nature probably with Vietnam in mind. One of the main issues I have with it is its actual recording / mixing where they overdid the stereo so the vocal is almost all coming out of the left ear. (It was often typical of them to do that back then).

A 3rd week for Bob Dylan as the protest songs lead the way in the top 2. The highest two entries come from English groups.
I know not everybody likes this kind of music and some people obviously still liked easy listening but I fail to understand how the song that enters my chart in the bottom position this week spent more weeks at UK #1 than any other in 1965.

Unchanged top 2 means maybe the Hollies can finally get a #1 on this chart, which is relatively low on new entries this week.

After all the excitement of a few weeks ago with consistent changes at #1, we have a steady #1 now, and having seen off the main challenge of Barry McGuire, looks confortable at the top in an unchanged top 4.

6 weeks at #1 for Bob Dylan, and this may be the first single to make it to 7.
The highest new entry is a song for which there were 2 versions, and it was written by Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, and was on the subject of acceptance of difference. Seems 1965 was no different to nowadays or perhaps worse. The thing that struck me when I heard the song was that it sounded very familiar, even though I didn't know it - like it sounded like a different song. And then I placed it. Meat Loaf's "All Revved Up With No Place To Go" on the Bat Out Of Hell album has pretty much copied this musically. I don't know of any lawsuit but I'm not the only person to have spotted the similarity.

The chart has its first 7-week number one. There have been 7-week #1s in the modern era, the most recent of them being at the start of 2016.
Its chances of making it to 8 are very slight. Firstly, no single has ever spent 8 weeks at #1 in the modern era as it's a chart rule, which will probably be extended back to the retro era too. Secondly, with the Beatles crashing in at #2, it's likely they will be #1 next week.
It's good news week for Hedgehoppers Anonymous who enter inside the top 10. And for their producer and songwriter, Jonathan King, of course. His own hit "Everyone's Gone To The Moon" peaked at #15 a couple of months ago.
A Lover's Concerto is based on a tune written by Johann Sebastian Bach. But in a few weeks time we will come across a song with lyrics based on an even earlier source.

As expected, the Beatles get their 9th #1 and replace Bob Dylan. The main question is whether they will once again be held to just one week on top, as another "Yesterday" song, by Chris Andrews, enters at #4. He has also written a #1 hit, "Long Live Love" by Sandie Shaw which was #1 earlier in the year, as well as her #2 hit "Girl Don't Come".
We get a new Bob Dylan hit in the chart, and also with Barry McGuire now going down, we have an "answer" song to it, "Dawn Of Correction" by Spokesmen. Usually I just discard answer songs as they are not very good, but this one has some merit and gets in the chart. It isn't exactly the same tune, and the lyrics are quite interesting. But it is clearly an answer song to "Eve Of Destruction".

A second week at #1 for Chris Andrews but under a two-pronged threat to the top by Fontella Bass climbing to #2 and a new entry by the Four Seasons who had a #1 in 1963 with "Walk Like A Man" and a #2 in 1964 with "Rag Doll". "Let's Hang On" is one of two songs that enter this week that has also been an NM hit when covered in the modern era.
More fun from the Newbeats and another UK #1 for the Seekers. Yet another US #1 for the Supremes and then at #18 enters a song that is 22 years old at this point, and 62 years old when Madness covered it in 2005, and peaked at #13 in my chart (and #38 in the UK chart). This version went one position higher in the UK chart, peaking at #37, and Lance Percival was better known as a comedian than a singer. (Note: Madness did not cover the song currently at #1. Their 1985 hit was entitled "Yesterday's Men" and is a different song). Darts had a hit cover of "Let's Hang On" in 1980 and although Barry Manilow also had a UK hit cover the following year, that version did not reach the NM chart.

There are 4 weeks of 1965 remaining and I have them all scored up, so these charts will be appearing between now and the end of the catch-up period together with the chart of the year.
There are still some major songs to come.
Meanwhile, as the Four Seasons remain at #1 and the Who don't make it this time (and will they ever or will it be like the UK chart?) we also see the Four Seasons get another entry under the name of "Wonder Who". Roger Miller had a UK #1 earlier in the year and his song about the country got him back into the UK top 30 but his success outside of his big one is really limited.

So a new number one, and it's the soul legend James Brown with one of his classics. His other songs have done rather poorly until now, and whilst there is at least one other total classic song of his which may reach #1, and one quite well known one which should be a hit, overall he is likely to be inconsistent in this chart.
A couple of classics among the new entries. Simon & Garfunkel with their vocal duet, and Steve Winwood and the Spencer Davis Group with their anthemic song that reached #1 in the UK.

I did say there are just too many classics at the end of 1965, and Day Tripper enters this week alone, with it being a double A-side in the UK with "We Can Work It Out" but that song will enter the US top 40 next week so I thought I'll wait a week for that one and enter that too. Of course, now Day Tripper has a head start and an entry position like that suggests #1 next week but we'll see if they can get both the top positions.
Day Tripper was written mostly by John Lennon, but he gave it to Paul "to finish". It's not as obvious what part Paul wrote as next week's will be when it's the other way round.
Had it not been for that song then we might have questioned if Herb Alpert's "Spanish Flea" could have given us another instrumental #1. I think in normal circumstances it would be. Always been a favourite of mine. The last instrumental to reach NM #1 on this retro chart was "Java" by Al Hirt at the start of 1964, a similar sort of tune.
The Barron Knights do their usual play on the acts. Being a Christmas song, they note this time the Hollies and the Ivy League... The latter of those bands have their last hit "Look Through Any Window" (#3 on this chart) spoofed. That band though fail to get their new one into the chart.
Below them, we have what will be the final entry by the Fourmost, who had a big hit with "A Little Loving" in 1964 (#2 on this chart). They did too many covers though. This song was originally done by the Coasters, but it's Elvis Presley's version I was more familiar with and that one actually reached my chart in 2005 when it appeared as a B-side of "Return To Sender" and I credited both tracks. When the Fourmost sing it, he uses a silly voice and mispronounces words on purpose so really it's a bit of a p*ss-take but it's a bit of Christmas fun, I suppose.

There you go, we have now had 10 Beatles number ones. That is one more than they have had in the UK chart up to this point. And if "We Can Work It Out" will be able to replace it (thus being #1 separately) it will count as 11.
We Can Work It Out was written mostly by Paul, however in this case it's clearer to divide up who wrote what, as John wrote the "Life is very short..." section, with George Harrison also contributing in suggesting the 3/4 rhythm in parts of that. However he doesn't get a songwriting credit.
Among the other entrants is the singer who had the UK Christmas #1 thirteen years earlier. "Spanish Eyes" took its time to chart in the UK. First in 1970 for one week at #49, then a much bigger hit in 1973 when it got to #5. However in the US chart it first appeared in 1965.

The 10 Beatles number ones so far have been:
1. From Me To You 2. She Loves You 3. I Want To Hold Your Hand 4. I Saw Her Standing There 5. And I Love Her 6. I Feel Fine 7. Ticket To Ride 8. Help 9. Yesterday 10. Day Tripper
On this chart, they didn't get to #1 with "Can't Buy Me Love" (#2) or "A Hard Day's Night" (only #4).
