The BBC Sports Personality of the Year will be crowned on 18 December. I assume the shortlist will be published in the next couple weeks or so. After being crowned world number one tennis player, last year's winner Andy Murray is now the favourite. Will he win again? Who else will be on the shortlist?

Current odds (according to oddschecker.com):
Andy Murray 4/7 Alistair Brownlee 9/2 Laura Trott 12/1 Mo Farah 12/1 Gareth Bale 28/1 Nick Skelton 40/1 Anthony Joshua 66/1 Max Whitlock 66/1 100/1 bar

I think it's usually the beginning of December the shortlist is announced.
If I had to pick a shortlist, it would feature (in no particular order):
Andy Murray Mo Farah Alistair Brownlee Chris Froome Jason Kenny Laura Kenny (nee Trott) Max Whitlock Adam Peaty Nick Skelton Jade Jones Maddie Hinch Hannah Cockroft Kadeena Cox
That's 13 but it's tough to leave anyone out and I can see it being a larger than usual shortlist this year.
Team of the year has to be the GB women's hockey team, ahead of the Wales football team, the England grand slam rugby team and Leicester City.
Coach of the year could go Chris Coleman or Claudio Ranieri or maybe Ivan Lendl.
The Overseas award is likely to be between Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps.

Unfortunately, the rather unlikeable Lewis Hamilton still has time to win the F1 World Championship. Let's hope that Nico Rosberg gets there soon, so there is no risk of SPOTY going to someone so undeserving.
I sincerely hope it is one of our Olympians. Murray has been brilliant, but he's had enough recognition from all directions.

The closest I got was a report on last year's list dated around the end of November.

Murray is also an Olympic champion. Good point. But his gold medal was so nerve-wracking to watch, he should be disqualified ! (Of course, that would also rule out Nick Skelton and the Hockey superstars, plus plenty of others, so I think I will withdraw that statement).

Don't think Murray should win, he won last year, even though it was less-deserving last year than this year (due to it being a team performance).

I sincerely hope it is one of our Olympians. Murray has been brilliant, but he's had enough recognition from all directions. This is a good point. Murray is the obvious favourite, especially if he finishes the year as #1 given that he's got a tougher group than Djokovic at the o2 tour finals next week, but given that he's won it twice before i'm not really sure I care that much whether he wins it or not. Olympians only get the chance to win this every four years, and Murray may yet have another chance to win it again before the next Olympics.

(Of course, that would also rule out Nick Skelton and the Hockey superstars, plus plenty of others, so I think I will withdraw that statement). Not a problem for me, given that I saw none of the Olympics at all! (I could have watched the final weekend, but i'd lost interest by that point).

Here are the odds being offered by 8 betting companies about 1 hour before the shortlist is revealed. Will be interesting to see if there is anyone they've missed, although I'd be quite surprised if there is.
Seems like they don't think anyone other than Andy Murray is worth putting money on.
Andy Murray 1/6 1/6 1/6 1/6 1/6 1/6 1/6 1/7 Alistair Brownlee 7/1 8/1 6/1 13/2 7/1 13/2 8/1 7/1 Laura Trott 16/1 10/1 14/1 20/1 16/1 20/1 20/1 14/1 Mo Farah 16/1 12/1 9/1 16/1 16/1 16/1 20/1 18/1 Gareth Bale 40/1 25/1 40/1 40/1 33/1 33/1 50/1 50/1 Max Whitlock 66/1 50/1 80/1 66/1 66/1 40/1 50/1 33/1 Nick Skelton 66/1 33/1 66/1 80/1 66/1 50/1 66/1 50/1 Lewis Hamilton 66/1 100/1 100/1 66/1 66/1 50/1 100/1 Jason Kenny 80/1 66/1 100/1 100/1 66/1 66/1 66/1 50/1 Anthony Joshua 100/1 50/1 80/1 200/1 100/1 50/1 66/1 100/1 Jamie Vardy 100/1 100/1 150/1 200/1 100/1 100/1 100/1 66/1 Jessica Ennis-Hill 100/1 125/1 200/1 100/1 100/1 100/1 Adam Peaty 150/1 150/1 250/1 200/1 100/1 100/1 200/1 100/1 Nicola Adams 150/1 100/1 250/1 200/1 100/1 200/1 100/1 100/1 Chris Froome 100/1 100/1 250/1 200/1 100/1 100/1 100/1 100/1 Bradley Wiggins 150/1 200/1 100/1 125/1 200/1 Carl Frampton 200/1 150/1 250/1 200/1 100/1 150/1 150/1 Charlotte Dujardin 200/1 100/1 250/1 200/1 100/1 200/1 Dame Sarah Storey 150/1 250/1 200/1 100/1 100/1 Justin Rose 200/1 300/1 250/1 200/1 100/1 200/1 Danny Willett 150/1 150/1 250/1 200/1 100/1 200/1 100/1 Mark Cavendish 200/1 400/1 200/1 100/1 200/1

I suppose it should be based on the year's performance but I personally feel that twice in the last three years is enough so will vote for Nick Skelton. (Bound to be on the list).

I'd expect to see one or two names the bookies have missed, particularly from the Paralympics, whom the BBC panel will ensure is well represented.

For me, the glaring omission is Chris Froome. Who'd have ever thought we'd get a British winner of the Tour de France and they don't make the SPOTY shortlist?
I thought Carl Frampton might have made it on as a token Northern Irish nominee, seeing as we have Scotland and Wales represented.

Has to be Andy for me, although I think horsey middle England may help Nick Skeleton run him close!

Max Whitlock should win, in my opinion. First EVER Olympic gold medal winner for Team GB in the men's gymnastics this Summer. That's something that none of the other competitors can claim. Also considered the most successful gymnast in GB history; again, few people on the list can say the same thing. Certainly not the current favourite.

Interestingly in a poll comprised of a panel of experts, their sports correspondents and their readers conducted by The Daily Telegraph Andy Murray has been voted the #1 UK Sportsperson of all time.
