09/02/2017 Lady Gaga - John Wayne
The country tinged pop rocker from Joanne written by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, BloodPop and Josh Homme, had its Happy Tree Friends inspired music video for the song premiered on February 8, 2017 on Apple Music, and was directed by Swedish director Jonas Åkerlund. It has been released to youtube 24 Hours later (to doubtless avoid clashing with "Chained to The Rhythm")

10/02/2017 Grimes ft. Janelle Monáe - Venus Fly
Two of my favourite female acts of the past decade unite to make a fun, futuristic pop record and a visually spectacular video.

16/02/2017 The Lemon Twigs - I Wanna Prove to You
The Long Island, New York , baroque power pop group fronted by teenage brothers Brian D’Addario and Michael D’Addario released their debut album Do Hollywood, on 4AD, produced by Jonathan Rado of indie rock band Foxygen late 2016. This is the third single taken from it featuring a hugely inventive video funnier than 100% of The Lonely Island output. (Clue: This spoof video was actually directed by Oscar winning film screenwriter/director Wes Anderson, who has directed the odd pop video for Aimee Mann; Fiona Apple; MGMT; Joanna Newsom; Beck; etc)

Catching up again. Firstly, well done raliverpool for the breadth of your selections, and for championing established and new artists. Secondly, I hope you won't mind if I use this thread as my main source for EP's non-hit singles of the month thread. Here are my picks from the last 3 weeks:- Missy Elliott - although I've never come close to buying any of her LPs, I can't help but admire her willingness to experiment and challenge convention. It is difficult to imagine how anyone could be more minimalist than this track. Jamiroquai - great to see him/them back, and an intriguing taster for the new album. Just the right balance of the Jamiroquai I know and love, and a step forward into new territory. Besty - never heard of her, but I really like this track. Future Islands - more of the same from my band of 2014. Hurrah. Depeche Mode - sorry guys, but though I once adored you, I am thoroughly sick and tired of your tedious dullness. You've been putting out this rubbish for almost 20 years now. Time to move on. Lady Gaga - once again, a really accomplished, established artist has left her shirt and trousers at home for the video shoot. I can understand talentless wannabees using this trick to sell their records, but Gaga shouldn't feel the need to. Her best single since Born This Way ? Grimes & Janelle - Duran Duran's children team-up for what is, perhaps predictably, a brilliant song. Fresh and immediate. Great stuff. Kings Of Leon - I haven't listened to Walls yet, but each of the tracks I have heard is top notch. Could this be their best LP so far ? I'll have to find out. Blossoms - delighted they are still mining their wonderful debut album. Passion Pit & Lemon Twigs - time for me to investigate both of these artists. It's a like from me for both of these releases.

17/02/2017 Ed Sheeran - How Would You Feel (Paean)
The Yorkshire born "male Adele" after releasing the annoying tropical house-lite "Shape Of You"; and the dull folk pop with try hard edgy lyrics "Castle On The Hill" (which was about as contrived as a Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May car related stunt) locked out the top two for over a month, proving the 1983 Simon Le Bon old saying when an act gets so popular "They could release a fart and it will go to number one!" correct); this new grat track released from the forthcoming "dive" album is a return to form sounding like a top notch acoustic guitar/piano ballad that Van Morrison; Joan Armatrading; or Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) would have come up with in 1978 due to its simple, direct, emotional delivery that hits the bulls eye.

18/02/2017 Holly Macve - Heartbreak Blues
The 20 year old country singer from Yorkshire first championed by the BAFTA & Olivier Award winning actress Sheridan Smith (well she was bigging the Blossoms up in 2013 on her Twitter a good 18 months before the NME, making her a better A&R music rep than Simon Cowell) releases this wonderful track preceding the forthcoming debut album Golden Eagle out March 20th on Bella Union records. Imagine a cross between Paloma Faith & Lana Del Rey (but without the annoying vocal ticks of either) channeling Emmylou Harris....

Producers Benny Blanco and Emile Haynie also participated on 'Love'. The album is also set to include some exciting guest featured artists, full details to be shared at a later date. Of the announcement, Lana said: "I made my first 4 albums for me, but this one is for my fans and about where I hope we are all headed".

21/02/2017 - Katy Perry ft Skip Marley - Chained To The Rhythm
I'm so glad I waited for the video ....... This hybrid of Toto's Africa meets Carly Simon (Chic Organisation's) - Why (probably as Nile Rodgers distinctive rhythm guitar is buried/morphed in the mix of this Max Martin production of a Sia tunage), given a Tropical House-lite makeover with a very subtle, yet very savage social commentary on Trump's America is such a grower only the Alt-Right; Putin-Bots; & Taylor Swift fans could possibly dislike.

22/02/2017 Ride - Charm Assault
The Oxford dream pop shoegazing alternative rock quartet consisting of Andy Bell, Mark Gardener, Laurence "Loz" Colbert, and Steve Queralt are back with their first new single in 21 years .... Now if the Coldplay making a record with the Chainsmokers and performing it at tonight's BRITs rumour is true then can someone please make both those acts go away for the same time period.

Haven't heard this one yet I'm mostly playing the one with Kenny Loggins and Michael Macdonald who would have thought it in 2017.
