They called Victor Borge the Great Dane. Born Børge Rosenbaum in Copenhagen in 1909. You can see why he felt it expedient to leave his native land for the United States in 1940, via Sweden. A topnotch classical musician as well as an even better comedian. His phonetic punctuation routine was released as a single in Britain as early as 1954.

To accompany Bjorn Again, here is No Way Sis, with their cover of "Shakermaker". Minor Christmas hit in 1996. I forgot how many soundalikes made the charts in the nineties. Well, at least three.

Little remembered novelty single from 1975 by Charlie Drake.
This single featured Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel and Robert Fripp! Peter Gabriel wrote it.

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich may have had comedic elements in their performances, but I cannot fathom how anyone involved with them could have thought that this was a good idea. Was the lead track of an EP which managed to miss the EP chart despite nobody really bothering with it any more.

^ Foggy was briefly a Tiswas presenter, which added to the stock of hitmakers on the programme; The Four Bucketeers themselves, which included John Gorman of The Scaffold, and Den Hegarty of Darts.
For some reason ATV wouldn't let the Tiswas crew use the Tiswas name on their hit single, and the BBC took the fun out of it by barring them using water on their TOTP performance.
Sally James...be still my heart.

The biggest-selling single in Australia isn't even a song...
...it dropped off the top of the Aussie charts for 2 weeks in 1983 because of a temporary ban in Victoria, over the X-rated content on the b-side, but returned for another six when the ban was lifted. Making 8 in total.

Yes. This is an actual gas attack in World War 1, in October 1918, which HMV recorded. And issued as a single.
Even more. It was a charity single. Proceeds going to War Bonds.
The recorder was a chap called Will Gaisberg. He inhaled some of the gas and returned home. Where he got caught in the influenza epidemic. With his resistance reduced, he could not survive. He died a week before the war ended.

Ooooohhh...
You know, the UK Citizenship Test should change its questions. Forget stuff about knowing the age of jurors or whatever, the questions should be things like...
Lester Piggott couldn't dig it, David Icke rides a bike, Richard Keys has got no knees, John Kettley is a...what?
That would show far more understanding and immersion in British culture than a trivia quiz.

Title says it all, really. Can you believe MTV banned this? And can you tell who is playing Debbie Gibson?

Perhaps inspired by "Back Home", the Germans in 1973 came up with a couple of football singles, one of which had the 1954 World Cup winners (and some other former internationals like Uwe Seeler) to sing it. Written and produced by Jack White. Not that one, but a chap called Horst Nußbaum, whose surname translates as Nut-tree, and who was also a footballer in the sixties, playing for PSV Eindhoven. He got better, he produced "Gloria" for Laura Branigan.

"Keep On Dancing" by The Gentrys. Not that bizarre, other than the wrestling personality Jimmy Hart was one of the vocalists, until you realize that the actual recording is about a minute long - the label just repeated it to string it out to 45 length.

It is the fate of prog rock acts that, if they have a singles hit, it comes across as a novelty, as it's difficult to compress what they do over an album onto a 45.
East Of Eden's "Jig A Jig" is in full single format here, but I prefer the TOTP closing titles version, with girls from Slough Technical College on their Rag week (including a Rag Queen who is gorgeous, but may now be a great-grandmother) dancing it out, as it would make a pretty compelling video even today. Indeed it almost looks contemporary. Other than the lack of tramp stamps et al.
