Jack Lee wrote Hanging On The Telephone, he was a member of the Nerves. He also wrote Blondie's hit "Will Anything Happen", but never recorded it, he wrote it especially for them when he found out they were covering "Hanging On The Telephone".
In addition he wrote and recorded as a soloist the original version of "Come Back And Stay" which was a top 5 hit for Paul Young in 1983.

A little minute of fun, I'm sure that almost everybody here know the original, but for some years in the past I was a fan of FC Celtic (I know that is very strange for Russian guy to love Scottish football club) and thought that Dance To Tipperary "The Bhoys Are Back In Town" is original song, recorded as the supporters song of famous football club.
I discovered the original only 15 years after Dance To Tipperary cover version.

I think most of Elvis's songs were covers weren't they? Not that there's anything wrong with that if they're adpated to a singer's individual style and made their own, as in Elvis's case.

No, a lot of the songs were written for him. Lieber & Stoller wrote many of the earlier classics like Jailhouse Rock. Elvis was sometimes given a songwriting credit, and it was sometimes that the songwriter had to agree to that in order for Elvis to record their song. They often did, knowing that if Elvis recorded it, it would most likely sell and some royalties is better than nothing. There were also times people "submitted" songs for Elvis to sing, particularly later in his career. "Feels Like I'm In Love" was written by Mungo Jerry's Ray Dorset for Elvis but he died before he could record it so he later gave it to Kelly Marie.

I've literally only just found out that Animotion's song was a cover. I have to say I much prefer their version to this original though:

As far as I am aware, Elvis didn't contribute anything towards the writing of any song for which he was given a writing credit. However, as you say, songwriters often concluded that they would still earn more if Elvis recorded (even with him taking some of the royalties) than they would if it was recorded by Hank and the Hellfires.

The original version of Twiggy's single "Vanilla Olay" (1976) was recorded in 1972 year by Jackie De Shannon.

Another on the list of Jackie DeShannon covers then.
OBviously there are artists like the Beatles and the Bee Gees whose songs have been covered more, but they were also prolific artists themselves, whereas Jackie DeShannon had very limited chart success in the USA and none at all in the UK.

A waking up too early for work/Wikipedia rabbit hole read ended up with this! I never knew it was a cover, or it had been offered around before Tina recorded it. I can totally hear Donna Summer singing it.

I was too young to know the original, this came out in 2004 and only years later I found out it was a cover

I can totally hear Donna Summer singing it. I knew that Bucks Fizz had recorded it first, and Cliff Richard was also offered it but turned it down. I'm so glad it fell into Tina's lap though, as she totally makes the song!

Meja's album was released only a few months later (after The Corrs recorded their version of the song), but I heard her version first and fell in love with it. The single was released in early 1999 and I love the music video. It didn't chart anywhere as far as I am aware, except my chart peaking at #7 and becoming one of my all time favorite songs from the 90's. If I am honest, I don't like The Corrs' version at all, it sounds a bit raw, unfinished.

I always wondered which version was first - and must be honest, it’s been so long that I didn’t look it up. Meja is fantastic, and a great song.

Going off what I just posted in the Listening thread, I had no idea that Ricky Martin's Private Emotion was a cover!
Originally by The Hooters, who reached #22 in 1987 with 'Satellite' and whose vocalist also co-wrote Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time.

Well I never knew that! I always wondered why it sounded slightly out of place on the album. Great song though!

Just found this information on Buzzjack forum.
Vengaboys' hit "Sha La La La La" was a cover of a 1973 track by Danish glam-rock band The Walkers.

I didn't know that was a cover, so it pre-dates Billy Joel's "My Life"..

Original version of (If Paradise Is) Half as Nice was recorded in 1968 year on Italian.
The song was translated into English by Jack Fishman. When it was offered Tremeloes as a potential single, they rejected it. Dave Clark 5 also wanted to record it, but it was recorded by Amen Corner.

It wasn't the debut single for Amen Corner , Gin House Blues was, but it was their only number one.
