One of the best British love songs ever recorded tops my Retro Rewind chart...... Eight more entries from:
- The haunting soul ballad recorded by the then Motown teenager for his 1975 album, Forever, Michael. Written by Sam Brown III and composed by Renée Armand. It was belatedly released as a single in 1981 after being remixed as the title track of the Motown One Day In Your Life
cash in compilation and after stalling at USA #55, became a surprise #1 hit in the UK, Ireland, South Africa, the Netherlands, as well as Australia #9 & Canada #23.
- The Mod trio's angry 13th single was their only single penned by all three band members Rick Buckler, Bruce Foxton and Paul Weller which stalled at UK #4.
- This UK #22 gothic rock track written by the group and co-produced with Nigel Gray, was the lead single from their 4th album Juju.
- The Byrds like lead single from the album Hard Promise co-produced with Jimmy Iovine made USA #19 & Canada #6.
- The final single culled from the Trust album sadly failed to trouble the UK top 75, despite it being an album stand out.
- Edwyn Collins Glasgow post-punk band fourth single received airplay on night time Radio 1 reaching #5 on the UK indie charts.
- The Jamaican singer/model's reworking of Astor Piazzolla's "Libertango" from her Nightclubbing album, failed to trouble English speaking charts, but it was a sizeable hit in Europe reaching #1 in Belgium, top 5 in France & the Netherlands, etc.
- The West Midlands Rock group scored a North American USA #12 & Canada #14 hit with this soft rock effort penned by Derek Holt.

Ten more entries this week from:
- The Chic sounding cover version of the 1977 Lamont Dozier black anthem was a sizeable hit in Europe including UK #4, despite failing to trouble the native New Yorkers own national chart.
- The UK #8 fourth & final single from the Vienna album was a more rockier synth pop effort.
- The follow-up to the Eurovision-winning song "Making Your Mind Up", was written & produced by Andy Hill, and was a more contemporary pop affair, and comfortably avoided them becoming one hit wonders by being a moderate hit throughout Europe as well as UK #12 & Australia #26.
- The third & final single from the Face Values album saw the Genesis drummer score a soulful UK #17 hit.
- The much covered show tune from the Andrew Lloyd Webber & Trevor Nunn 1981 musical Cats sung by the character Grizabella, a one-time glamour cat who is now only a shell of her former self, was meant to be sung by Judi Dench, cast in the role of Grizabella, whom snapped her Achilles tendon during rehearsals prior to the London opening. She was replaced by "Evita" Elaine Paige ... and the rest is history.
- The UK #73 synth pop single from the album Quit Dreaming & Get Off The Beam.
- The Melbourne rock group's final native top 40 hit as they called it a day at the end of the year reached Australia #21 from their last album of original material Sondra.

Will You storms into #1 and Stand & Deliver made #1, but my general feeling is that, apart from a handful of good songs, the Spring of 1981 is not actually a great time for music.
Quite surprised that Michael Jackson has made it to #2 in your chart with that song, less surprising that Can You Feel It was a big hit as it was in mine too albeit in a relatively weak chart.
My guess is that Ghost Town will shortly storm into your chart and get to #1.

The Sheffield new wave synth pop group claim their first chart topper ... I suspect it may not be their last.... Just six entries this week from:
- The UK #9, USA #26, Australia #35 progressive rock title track of their 1981 album was written by Tony Banks, Phil Collins, and Mike Rutherford; and got its title from the song's musical structure.
- Edinburgh born folk singer Mary Sandeman became a novelty one hit wonder with this Bobby Heatlie post disco track which topped the charts in the UK, Belgium, Ireland, Finland, Sweden & Switzerland, as well as Australia #57, Canada #42, but failed to chart in Japan. She last performed the song in 1984, and in 2015 regarded the song for a Channel 5 show on 1980s one hit wonders as "racially inappropriate and an embarrassment".
- The original flop single release from the album The Friends of Mr Cairo, of this future Donna Summer hit, which became a minor European hit (including UK #67) in 1984 upon its release to promote a Jon & Vangelis Best Of compilation.
- The London new wave band's latest UK #45 hit.
- The London born synthpop keyboard boffin born Thomas Robinson debut single release which sadly failed to trouble the UK top 75.
- The Rolling Stones bassist self penned electronic pop tune originally written for Ian Dury, became an unlikely novelty UK #14 & Australia #5 hit single.

Aneka had three number ones in my charts. "Japanese Boy" spent five weeks on the top. "Little Lady" was detroned after three weeks at # 1 by my second favourite song of all 80s decade. Four years after she got third # 1 "Rose Rose I Love You" also with 3 weeks at # 1.
