RA Retro Tracks Rewind Charts 1980 - 1989This is the third decade part following on from: The 1960s equivalent thread: fatherandy2.proboards.com/thread/84300/retro-tracks-rewind-charts-completed?page=1The 1970s equivalent thread: fatherandy2.proboards.com/thread/87804/retro-tracks-rewind-charts-1970?page=1As per the previous threads I'm retrospectively taking account the current circumstances. Hence the rewind/revisionism element of a chart compiled by a 45 year old who was +8.5 years when this time period of this decade's charts start. Firstly, regarding chart rules allowing tracks/songs rather than physical singles. For this decade (which was the decade that 4+ singles were regularly culled from a successful album), I'm introducing a rule change, so Album only & B-side tracks will be excluded from my top 40. However, I'm now including a non singles Top 5 chart of album/B-side cuts from this era. However, I'm only allowing one track per act at one time on this "LP" Top 5. Secondly, I'm again imagining that the musical listener had the world wide web available. Hence, as a rule I will attempt to chart tracks when they first became hits in either the USA or UK, or highly successful international hits in Europe and Australia; as well as charting tracks which were only hits in the USA, or elsewhere, and flopped or were never released as singles in the UK ....

O you're into my favourite decade. This is going to be very interesting.. I must do mine some day. I'm just afraid of missing some songs that didn't chart that I like.

Never understood why that Marianne Faithful record didn't go big in the UK - superb. Neither do I. But much like the last recording Abba ever made (The Day Before You Came) which stalled at UK #33 ...(& going back earlier to the likes of the original indie rock band The Velvet Underground; & the introspective acoustic folk of Nick Drake) then perhaps it was a case of its cold, clinical sound being too far ahead of its time.

- The fourth track on the Australian rock group's 1979 album Highway to Hell, their last with lead vocalist Bon Scott. The Mutt Lange produced track reached UK #29.
Bon Scott died on 19th February 1980 (from alcohol poisoning, I think, or something related to his drinking binge). Perhaps the way it was "self-inflicted" meant he didn't get the "sympathy" purchases that might have pushed this single a lot higher up the chart. I did note though that you charted this exactly in the week that he died.

Why has David Bowie recorded that Kurt Weill track? It's awful. Maybe he's past it and should just pack it all in now..

Why has David Bowie recorded that Kurt Weill track? It's awful. Maybe he's past it and should just pack it all in now.. It was actually recorded as part of his attempt to get out of his RCA record contract where he had to record X amount of albums, and stand alone singles. Hence, as a Bowie fan I like the self destructive uncommercial truculent vibe of the recording. It was also his goodbye to living in Berlin (he decamped to own properties in New York, & Montreux, Switzerland), and the 1970s (it was originally planned as a November 1979 release but got delayed by the record label).

My comment was my reaction at the time.
5 months or so later I was of course proved wrong.

My comment was my reaction at the time. 5 months or so later I was of course proved wrong. Well Gary Numan was certainly saying that in interviews at the time. After all he had nicked Bowie's Berlin persona and Mr Webb's Persona surname was incredibly close to David Bowie's character in the film Man Who Fell To Earth (Gareth Newman). Little wonder when the pair first met, Bowie had him thrown off the set of Kenny Everett's TV Christmas Special (1979). Numan had already filmed his song for the programme and was hanging around to see Bowie film his. (From Strange Fascination: The Definitive David Bowie autobiography by David Buckley) "Before then I thought he was a god," he recalls. "I used to get into fights at school protecting his name. Then, all of a sudden, this bloke I'd adored for years was throwing me out of a building because he hated me so much. It really upset me at the time, especially when I thought of how many thumps I'd taken for him. I can only imagine he was going through an insecure patch. At the time I was outselling him about four to one." The "Are Friends Electric" hit maker was not backwards in telling this story to the media at the time which upset the most rabid of the Bowie fan base, which add in the fact he had come out in support of the new Conservative Government led by Margaret Thatcher, Numan received death threats via letters and phone calls. His father once had a petrol bomb put under his car, though it didn't go off; his mother was threatened with kidnapping and was briefly put under police protection. "I think when you become famous very quickly, as I did, there's a resentment in people because they think that your life had gone from just like theirs to something very privileged," he ponders. "People used to walk down the street and shout 'w**ker!' at me. I'd think, 'How can you say that? You've never even met me.'"
