I'll be honest with you, I'm now running into a time period where I recognize 75% of the tracks from the artist & song title; and another 20% after I play a bit of track. As I was starting to listen to the radio before getting my first "ghetto blaster" cassette player in Xmas 1983, which resulted in me starting my personal charts at the beginning of 1984.
Hence, all of a sudden this is a lot less fun because I'm discovering far less stuff that I have never heard than before .... so I'm still going to continue doing these charts, but I'm going to stop doing the new entry reference comments.

"Valley Girl" is the most unpredictable # 1 from all your retrospective. It is certainly an extraordinary record. Visually Toni Basil's choreography (she has helped out on numerous 80s videos including by Talking Heads; David Bowie; Blondie; Bette Midler; Tina Turner; Cyndi Lauper) gives it that extra special WTF ness.

My highest new entry is the final song recorded by the Swedish pop quartet was this haunting synth heavy near 6 minutes track which does not have a chorus, alongside Agnetha's atonal "turned off" vocal lament to reflect the lyrical matter of "a mundane day before something very bad happens to the narrator". This track was far too good for the British audiences where it stalled at UK #32. Yet it reached the top 5 in Belgium, Canada, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden and Switzerland & Australia #48. It is the group's 10th Retro Rewind chart topper.

I wonder if Abba's The Day Before You Came would have been bigger had been edited to make it a couple of mimutes shorter?
It was quite a big hit in several European territories.
Freda's I Know There's Something Going On should have been massive - she was regarded as the "unlamourous" member of Abba.

Freda's I Know There's Something Going On should have been massive - she was regarded as the "unlamourous" member of Abba. I think in the UK they were regarded as "old hat" by trendy Radio 1 & the tabloid media, especially compared to newer fresher equivalents Bucks Fizz; Dollar; & Tight Fit. Hence, I doubt it would have made any difference in the UK. I completely agree on the Frida track, Phil Collins drumming is brilliant on this. I'm surprised it never got the late 90s/early 00s Ibiza dance makeover to become a UK top 10 hit via cover.
