The former Genesis frontman scores his second Retro Rewind chart topper with this anti war art rock song featuring Kate Bush on backing vocals... Elsewhere, seven more entries come from:
- Penned by the Canadian progressive rock trio of Neil Peart, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson. This Canadian #22, USA #51 & UK #13 hit came from their 1980 Permanent Waves album.
- The UK #17 & Canada #56 nervy break up tune written as ever by Difford & Tilbrook was taken from their ArgyBargy album (their last with keyboardist Jools Holland (first time around)).
- The Northamptonshire disco pop group with this Adrian Baker & Eddie Seago composition scored a UK #2 & Ireland #2 hit with this slice of pop cheddar.
- The Kent born Anne Martin, with band members Henry Priestman (formerly with band Yachts), Rusty Egan (Visage) and Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols) reached UK #50 with her third single. It was to be her biggest hit. She later married Suggs from Madness in 1982 and retired from music. She appeared in 1984 as a homeless person in the Madness music video of "One Better Day".
- The title track of her 1979 new wave album was co-written by the 1960s pop singer and girlfriend of Mick Jagger, before things went very wrong for her in the 1970s after years of drug abuse, homelessness, and suffering from anorexia. The song about terrorism failed to chart in the UK (we'd have to wait for Sunscreem cover to change that), but became a moderate success in Europe & Australia & New Zealand. It featured Steve Winwood on keyboards.
- The debut single by the Irish post punk band released by CBS records.
- The London power rock band fronted by John Waite made USA #33 & Australia #92 with their single from their 4th album Union Jacks produced by Australian Keith Olsen.

20 Martha & The Muffins - Echo Beach (1wk 20 NEW) I remember the first time I heard Echo Beach in 1980, I tried streaming it lots of times (channel hopped all my local radio stations), proving difficult I decided to download it (recorded it off the radio onto a C90 cassette tape). I then transferred it onto my Ipod (Panasonic music centre with a built in cassette, record deck & radio - with dolby sound). Not knowing much about Martha & the Muffins I did an internet search for them (consulted the NME), not able to find out much there, I googled them (looked in Sounds, Record Mirror, Melody Maker). Things were so different back then , ignorance was bliss. I really enjoy all your retro charts, it must have been a painstaking venture to list all them. But no doubt it was a labour of love.

Ten more retro rewind entries this week:

- The progressive rock trio's lead UK #8, USA #58, Canada #49 single from their 1980 album Duke, became a live concert favourite.

I decided to attempt this thanks to the OCC because I think it is wrong that passive listening to music via streaming of curated playlists paid for by record companies, and listened to be people paying £0.00 should count towards the charts. So I decided to go back and reimagine a world where the internet existed and you could chart album only tracks (although I've abandoned that for the 1980s because record companies started to properly mine albums for singles, but still allow the opportunity to capture them) ... and this concept was born. And yes, I'm thoroughly enjoying discovering and rediscovering music whilst building up yearly playlists.

I liked that there were two Marthas in Martha & The Muffins. Makes it ambiguous as to which Martha was a Muffin.
Martha Ladly on keys...oooh, I so fancied her. Doubtless she will crop up again in a couple of years.

- The Martin Luther King reggae tribute was actually the original A side of the Birmingham group's debut single, before Radio preferred the other side.
- The electronic synthpop second UK #32 single release from the Metamatic album, was a Ballardian dystopian scenario involving an automobile in the lyrics.
- The Manchester soft rock band's second biggest hit UK #14 single, was culled from the 1979 Eric Stewart produced album Facades.

Debuting at the top with their 5th Retro Rewind chart topper to date, is the New York New Wave group with this theme to the 1980 film American Gigolo, which topped the charts in USA, Canada & UK, & Australia #4. Italian disco producer Giorgio Moroder originally asked Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac to add lyrics and a top line to his instrumental, but after she passed, Deborah Harry obliged.
The other new entries come from:
- The Mick Jones composed London Calling track, which was the last recorded for the double album. Released as a single outside of Europe it peaked at USA #23, Australia #26, & Canada #62. The song has often interpreted to be about Jones' volatile relationship with the Slits guitarist Viv Albertine. Whilst Garbage's biggest hit "Stupid Girl" used this record's drum riff/pattern.
- This Damien O'Neill & Michael Bradley post punk UK #9 composition was inspired by an actual male cousin of one of the band members.
- Taken from the second album Seventeen Seconds, this Simon Gallup, Robert Smith, Matthieu Hartley, Lol Tolhurst gothic rock composition reached UK #31, and became a live stalwart for the group.
- The Glass Houses song famously begins with the sound of broken glass. The featured riff of the song loosely borrows from the Buffalo Springfield hit "Rock and Roll Woman" on the Buffalo Springfield Again album. Chart wise it reached USA #7, Canada #6, Australia #28, but failed to chart in the UK.
- The Argybargy New Wave album cut was released as a single in North America, which despite plenty of airplay failed to chart in the USA. In Canada it peaked at #52.
- This homoerotic rock tribute to the Sex Pistols was co-produced by Chris Thomas. It gave The Who's guitarist/songwriter a minor UK #39 & USA #89 hit.
- The UK #20 title track of the second studio album by the English heavy metal band.

One of the Marthas (probably the one that was also a Muffin) ended up joining the Associates. She's the woman you saw with them on Top of the Pops.

35 Spinners - Working My Way Back To You (1wk 35 NEW)
- Written by Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell, this cover of the 1966 Four Seasons hit gave the American soul group a USA #2, UK (& Ireland) #1, Australia #12, & Canada #5 hit with this Michael Zager disco production on Atlantic records.
You took a while to chart that. I didn't know that duo had written it, I assumed it was Crewe / Gaudio like most Four Seasons songs.

My favourite Blondie song is to come (clue you don't have to wait for their reformation). I prefer Abba to Blondie purely on the basis they have more strength in depth song wise.

In 1980 Air Supply were not a duo but a full band. Frank Esler-Smith was the piano / keyboard player. He sadly died in 1991.

A quarter of the chart is new entries in the week that an act from New Zealand top my chart for the first time. I doubt it will be Neil Finn's last time at my chart's summit...
- Written by Bryan Ferry & Phil Manzanera, this more smooth streamlined sounding single preceded the release date of their album Flesh and Blood reached UK #5, Australia #45, & USA #80.
- Composed by American songwriter Tom Bahler for Karen Carpenter, this Quincy Jones Off The Wall album production saw this ballad reach USA #10, UK #3, Canada #15 & Australia #17.
- Written by Lewie and Keef Trouble, this Stiff Records recording produced by Bob Andrews, saw the Southampton born singer/songwriter reach UK #16, Australia #21, and was a Top 40 hit across Europe.
- The Irish girl group's UK #12 & Ireland #5 hit from the Making Waves album, co-written by MOR producers Ben Findon & Nicky Graham.
- Subsequently included on the Liverpool Post Punk band's Crocodiles album, this was the quartet's first chart entry at UK #62.
- The Adelaide Australian rock band's helmed by John Brewster reached Australia #8 from their 4th album, Dark Room.
- Part of the Duke album's "hidden suite" which also included "Behind the Lines", "Guide Vocal", "Turn It On Again", "Duke's Travels" and "Duke's End," the lyrics tell the story of the rise and fall of a diva, a "female rock star. Released as a single it stalled at UK #46.
- The Worcestershire new wave band fronted by Wendy Wu, only charting single (out of seven) made UK #56 on Epic Records.
- The London Punk band's biggest hit reached UK #21 on EMI Records.
- The teen idol youngest brother of the Bee Gees: Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb made USA #12, Australia #62, Canada #32 with this ballad duet written & co-produced by Barry Gibb.

Tom Bahler denied the song was about Karen Carpenter and said it was about his relationship before that one but everyone knew of Karen because she was famous and associated it with her. He said he'd only just met Karen at the time he wrote the song.
The first time Jona Lewie performed "parties" on TOTP, one of the girl singers with him was Kirsty MacColl but she didn't sing on the studio recording of it.

I was actually referencing Tom Bahler writing it for Karen Carpenter to sing on her unreleased Phil Ramone produced solo album (originally titled as "Lovelines" with a Rod Temperton penned title track) which was shelved by A&M Records in 1979 after her brother Richard took a year off to treat his addiction to Quaaludes. (An album from the sessions titled "Karen Carpenter" was released after Richard Carpenter remixed the material in 1989, and it was eventually released in 1996). As things stands it is one of 9 of the 21 recordings for that album which have not seen the light of day. As for "Parties":
