Indiana's heartland rocker's Cajun pop USA #15, Canada #1, Australia #8, UK #93 lead single from his 10th album Big Daddy. Lyrically, it "refers to living in a disposable pop world where McDonald's has infiltrated every town in America". Whilst its video has a pop of the whitening up of pop superstars Michael Jackson & Whitney Houston (which resulted in a bit of a backlash)..

The hip hop song featured on the US white rap act's album Paul's Boutique, was a radical departure from their previous album. Hence it stalled at USA #36 & UK #76 as its Dust Brothers acid jazz funk production was too far ahead of its time.
The David Bowie penned UK #51 & Australia #97 first single released by Tin Machine, taken from their eponymous debut album produced by Tim Palmer featured a Julien Temple directed video, was written about the rise of fascism in Europe at the end of the decade.

Topping my chart is this cover of my Retro Rewind #1 from August 1968. Like the original it peaked at UK #12. In Ireland MacColl's version produced by husband Steve Lillywhite charted seven places higher than the original Ireland #9.
My highest new entry is taken from the Madchester band's self titled debut album produced by John Leckie. The UK #32 song was written by Ian Brown and John Squire.
My featured faller is an amalgam of many musical ideas of Prince's at the time. Taken from the 1989 Batman soundtrack. Helped by the film's popularity and its video directed by Albert Magnoli and choreographed by Barry Lather which takes influences & imagery not just from the film, but the original dark comic, and the camper mid 1960s TV show starring Adam West. This a contender for the strangest track to top the US singles chart (it also hit #1 in New Zealand, Norway & Switzerland). As well as UK #2, Canada #2, & Australia #2.

New York's Piano Man scores a 4th Retro Rewind #1 and his first of the decade with its lyrics providing a brief, rapid-fire allusions to more than 100 headline events between 1949, the year of Joel's birth, and 1989, when the USA #1, UK #7, Australia #2, Canada #2 song was released on his album Storm Front.
My highest new entry was written and produced by Thompson Twins members Alannah Currie and Tom Bailey and first offered to Madonna, and then Cyndi Lauper whom both rejected it. It became the biggest solo hit of the Blondie lead singer peaking at UK #13, Canada #12 & Australia #2. The video was directed by Mary Lambert whom had directed many of Madonna's early videos including "Borderline", "Like a Virgin", "Material Girl", "La Isla Bonita", and "Like a Prayer"..
The lead single from the Deptford's finest post punk band's 8th album Frank (& last with pianist Jools Holland) sadly failed to chart.

"I Want That Man" wasn't Debbie (or Deborah) Harry's biggest UK solo hit as "French Kissing In The USA" peaked higher in the UK, but maybe it was a bigger hit in other parts of the world.
Belinda Carlisle peaked at #1 in my chart for 1 week then was replaced by Pandora's Box and together they kept the Wedding Present's "Kennedy" at #3 which at the time was their debut for me but I subsequently inserted "My Favourite Dress" in when we ran through the retro on here, and their 1988 hits will probably get in too.
