- The Rodgers & Edwards written & produced lead single from the disco R&B group's 4th album Real People incorporated harder rock/new wave elements into their trademark disco funk sound. Hence it stalled at USA #61, as the "Disco Sucks movement" ensured it received minimal radio airplay.
- The uptempo Bob Seger like self penned USA #19 & Canada #4 track from the Los Angeles born singer/songwriter's 1980 album Hold Out.

What a top 3 for 17 August, name wise at least.
My favourite Bowie, 2nd fav Abba but much as I like Diana Ross Upside Down is by no means a favourite track. In fact I found it very hard to get into the diana! album.
Interestingly it was her top selling studio album in almost every territory in the world but (surprisingly?) not in the UK where it peaked at #12.
Can't understand why the UK ignored Bette Midler's The Rose - beautiful single.

- The 1960s hit singer as paert of Joe Meek's stable, had turned to acting in the 1970s, and landed the part of Mr. Spooner on the British sitcom Are You Being Served?; after being cast as the father (Mr. Peters) of the two children in the TV version of Worzel Gummidge. So he took the opportunity for this Chas & Dave backed cover of the 1913 composed ballad, via a contract with Polydor Records scoring a UK #9 hit, his second & final top ten hit 18 years after his first.
Of course Chas Hodges had originally been a member of Mike Berry's backing band in the 1960s.

Antmania started here. The first Retro Rewind chart topper for Stuart Goddard's post punk band who preceded the New Romantic movement, for the act who were to the 1980s what Marc Bolan & T. Rex were to the 1970s. I doubt this will be their last chart topper on my chart. Eight more entries from:
- This Mike Chapman UK #1, USA #1, Canada #1, New Zealand #1, Ireland #2 & Australia #4 cover of the rocksteady John Holt penned The Paragons 1966 original, was taken from the New York New Wave group's 5th studio album Autoamerican.
- The 4th & final single taken from the synthpop duo's The Age Of Plastic debut album was a tribute to the U.K. film company Elstree Studios. It reached UK #55 & Australia #13 and featured an early Godley & Creme directed video.
- In the words of Bryan Ferry "this Chic meets Abba fusion" was the final UK #12 & Australia #35 single culled from their UK #1 album Flesh & Blood.
- The "feeme toon" to the popular ITV series Minder was written by Gerard Kenny and Patricia Waterman (the second wife of actor Dennis Waterman), and so became a UK #3 hit.
- The much covered & much sampled LGBT anthem written & produced with the music by the Chic Organization hit USA #5, UK #13, Canada #18, & Australia #40.
- This limited edition 12" only single was this wonky, futuristic McCartney II electropop track which has been covered by Hot Chip & MGMT. Highlighting a sense of forward thinking musical adventure lacking in his former songwriting partner....
- This was the first single released from Double Fantasy, and the first new recording Lennon had released since 1975. The Jack Douglas co-production was chosen by Lennon not because he felt it was the best track on the album, but because it was the most appropriate following his five-year absence from the recording industry. He referred to it during production as the "Elvis/Orbison" track. It had peaked at UK #8, USA #6, Canada #12 & Australia #16 before some nutcase murdered the former Beatle on 8th December 1980. As a result the track reclimbed to top the charts in all of these countries as well as Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, & Switzerland.
- The UK #14 & Ireland #8 song was written by Mike Leeson and Peter Vale, and produced by Christopher Neil.
