Nine more entries in my Retro chart this week from:
- The Stiff Records seasonal anthem inspired by the "a bit like the eternal soldier at the Arc de Triomphe" and making reference to World War I & a future Nuclear War would have been a UK #1 hit but for Mark Chapman
where it had to make do with UK #3. Elsewhere it topped the charts in France & Austria, Australia #2, Germany #2, New Zealand #3, etc.
- The ballad song written by Neil Diamond and Gilbert Bécaud that appeared in the 1980 movie The Jazz Singer which would have been a USA #1 hit but for Mark Chapman
where it had to make do with USA #2. Elsewhere it peaked at Canada #3, Australia #29, & UK #17. - The heartland rock USA #5, Canada #5, Australia #33, & UK #44 (UK #28 in 1995) lead single from the double album The River.
- Brian Setzer's New York rockabilly self titled debut album was produced by Dave Edmunds. Whilst they did not enjoy any initial success in North America, their debut single reached UK #9.
- This art rock festive themed song first recorded in 1979, was held off a year and became a popular (at least on BBC Radio 6 Music every December) UK #29 & Ireland #13 hit.
- Jeff Lynne's synth rock ballad from the Xanadu OST reached UK #21 & Ireland #7.
- "Gordon's Alive" The Brian May penned theme rock song of the 1980 film Flash Gordon (& that current terrible cleaning TV advert) was a UK #10, USA #42, Australia #16, Germany #3 & Austria #1 hit.
- This reworking of the Searching For The Young Soul Rebels track "Keep It" surprisingly failed to trouble the UK charts.
- The Indiana born heartland rocker's USA #27 & Australia #43 hit from his second album John Cougar.

The classic Christmas anti-war song tops my Retro Rewind chart .... in a week containing six new entries:

- The Rossi/Frost penned UK #11 & Ireland #10 rock hit from the album Just Supposin'.
- The Sting penned second single from the album Zenyatta Mondatta gave to post punk trio a UK #5, USA #10, Canada #1, & Australia #6 hit.
- The London rockney duo novelty UK #8 from the album Don't Give a Monkey's.
- The post punk song about Louis XIV of France gave Malcolm McLaren's latest created band a minor UK #58 hit.
- This 1978 song from the album Hobo with a Grin, was rerecorded and produced by Midge Ure to give it a new wave edge compared to the mid 1970s Californian vibe of the original. Despite this it still failed to trouble the UK Top 75.

Eleven more Retro Rewind entries this week from:
- The Agnetha Fältskog sung seasonal track from Super Trouper which became a belated single release (hence why I'm charting it, and now leaving it in the LP bubbling under section for album only & B sides) hitting top 5 peaks in Sweden & Norway in the late 2000s.
- The USA #85 single from the album Deface The Music, saw Todd Rundgren's group pay homage to The Beatles and create songs which sounded very similar to the Fab Four's tunes throughout the various stages of their career (in an album shelved from 1977, as The Rutles stole their thunder). This track was a homage to "Please Please Me".
- The Birmingham new wave 2 Tone group's non album UK #7 single, which was their 4th of 5 top 10 singles.
- Trying to recreate the magic of his Wizzard's Xmas classic single, the West Midland's pop maverick's follow up Xmas single received airplay, but sadly failed to hit the UK Top 75.
- The opening track on his 1980 LP Telekon and was the third and final single from this synth rock album, and unsurprisingly stalled at UK #20.
- The stand alone non album UK #41 was written by the group's current line up of Susan Ballion (Siouxsie Sioux), Peter Edward Clarke (Budgie), John McGeoch and Steven Severin; and was co-produced with Nigel Gray.
- The UK #37 & USA #58 Mark Knopfler penned rock song dealing with a female roller-skater breezing through busy city streets, while listening to a portable radio through her headphone, was co-produced by Jimmy Iovine, and taken from the Making Movies album.
- This UK #60 jazzy new wave single from was taken from the forthcoming Nick Lowe produced Trust album.
- The Oldham based progressive rock band's latest UK #61 turned into a sizeable hit on Europe during the early part of 1981, where it even topped the charts in Switzerland, probably due to its synth heavy Eurobeat sound.
- The Manchester punk-funk band second single (on Factory Records) which featured heavily on UK Music weekly year end Best Of lists.
- The Talking Heads influenced UK #40 first single from the experimental Sandinista triple album.

You liked My Old Piano.
If I was shocked when it emerged as the follow up to Upside Down in the UK I was even more shocked when it was such a big hit.
Although not her biggest hit in the UK by any means I'm Coming Out was one of her biggest sellers on Download.

Just Like Starting Over climbing to #5 just before his death.
Then the next week it dropped to #11.
I wonder if you'd been doing the chart live at the time if that would have happened, or if it would have got the sympathy climb to #1.
In my chart at the time it had already been #1 and fallen as Jona Lewie, which I seemed to chart quicker than you did, had knocked it off #1. But John Lennon reclaimed the #1.
I'm expecting no John Lennon reissues here so Woman will be his next chart appearance (assuming you chart that song, of course)

It did mean what it does now but Diana Ross might not have meant it that way, although she probably did, as it was embraced by the gay clubs. Was on holiday in Majorca at this time and everywhere was playing Diana Ross especially 'My Old Piano' in the bar we always went to that and Jona Lewie!!

In my chart at the time it had already been #1 and fallen as Jona Lewie, which I seemed to chart quicker than you did, had knocked it off #1. But John Lennon reclaimed the #1. I'm expecting no John Lennon reissues here so Woman will be his next chart appearance (assuming you chart that song, of course) You only have to go back to 2016 on this very website to my Personal Charts to know I have been very unsentimental about popstars dying, and recharting or reclimbing tracks on it. (My album chart is a different matter altogether, though). The first single I ever bought early in 1981 was the reissue of John Lennon's "Imagine" with "Working Class Hero" on the b-side. Looking at it from a 2017 perspective I realize it is an incredibly conservative backward looking throwback of a song (albeit a very good song), not something you would have expected from the former Beatle. Hence why the week of his death the Double Fantasy album was down at UK #46. Largely thanks to several lacklustre to poor reviews of the album. Such as this one in Smash Hits by David "Smash Hits; Q Magazine; The Word" Hepworth: ia800500.us.archive.org/BookReader/BookReaderImages.php?zip=/34/items/smash-hits-1980-11-27/smash-hits-1980-11-27_jp2.zip&file=smash-hits-1980-11-27_jp2/smash-hits-1980-11-27_0022.jp2&scale=4&rotate=0Just imagine an alternative universe if it had been Paul McCartney who had been murdered coming out of Abbey Road Studios in London on December 8th 1980 in the year he released his very progressive, futuristic, forward sounding McCartney II album....containing this much played Radio 6 Music oldie: .... and had already recorded many of the solo tracks which subsequently appeared on "Tug Of War" & "Pipes Of Peace" album. Containing this subsequently demoted to non album B-side which was recorded on the day (hence before) John Lennon was murdered which would have been a huge international #1 hit for its ominous lyrics (as well as sounding like Mumford & Sons three decades before they existed): Imagine, John Lennon finishing off the Live Aid extravaganza in Philadelphia with the title track of his 1971 album. Imagine, John Lennon going major league apeshit in the media at Michael Jackson outbidding him to purchase the Lennon & McCartney songbook. And just think about (George Harrison actually theorized the following from a Paul dead/John alive scenario in a mid 1990s interview) a different 1990s "Threetles" reunion with John, George, & Ringo adding their bits to this then half finished November 1980 Paul McCartney "children's recording" for the now named "Long & Winding Road" Anthology project on "We All Stand Together", and getting Aardman Animations to do the video.

Graham Russell didn't write Every Woman In The World and it was rather a disappointment to me too after their first 2 hits.

Graham Russell didn't write Every Woman In The World and it was rather a disappointment to me too after their first 2 hits. Amended. He wrote the flipside "Chances" which I erroneously picked up on. The song was written by British songwriting partnership of Bugatti and Musker who also composed hits for the Three Degrees; Paul Nicolas; Sheena Easton; Bette Midler; Bonnie Tyler; etc. PS. As far as I'm concerned Air Supply were (once they went international & ignoring their earlier Australia only career) always a duo with hired hands on salaries. This came to light when former band members took (unsuccessful) legal action against the duo & their major record label in the late 1980s for recording royalties, after they believed they were short changed because the only two people signed by Clive Davis to Arista records in 1979 as Air Supply were Graham Russell & Russell Hitchcock. In the meantime the litigation resulted in the band being effectively shutdown, resulting in a chart career momentum killing outcome.

- The UK #7 instrumental written by Mike Barson, Mark Bedford and Daniel Woodgate, and produced by Clive Langer & Alan Winstanley. It was different to the Absolutely album track, and 30 seconds longer.
- The American female country singer's self penned USA #1 (AC #1 & Country #1), Canada #1, Australia #9 & UK #47 song for the 1980 comedy film of the same name.
- The Andy Partridge penned UK #16 & Ireland #20 hit from the Black Sea album produced by Steve Lillywhite was their biggest hit to date.
- The London New Romantics second single was this UK #17 & Ireland #14 track New Wave track taken from their forthcoming debut Journeys To Glory album produced by Richard James Burgess.
- The London based international funk/disco band final sizeable hit (UK #19, Ireland #27, & USA #110) was written by Rod Temperton taken from the album Candles. The group disbanded early in 1983, after keyboardist/songwriter Rod Temperton left to enjoy his royalties earned from writing hits for Michael Jackson, George Benson, etc. Lead singer James Dean "J.D." Nicholas replaced the now solo Lionel Richie in the Commodores; and bassist/producer Derek Brambles left to pursue a career in production (more of which later in the decade).
- The Tony Visconti debut single by the John Peel championed 24 year old singer songwriter whom stalled at UK #65 with this New Wave/Post Punk/Glam Rock hybrid radio airplay hit featuring the singer who looked like Jane Horrocks before she existed, and sounding like Sinead O'Connor before she existed, who quit the pop industry after just four singles, and an unfinished album to focus on being a mum and raising a family.
- The song was originally recorded by its co-writer Gerard Kenny who composed it with Drey Shepperd about a struggling musician who never gives up, was turned into a USA #10 (AC #4), UK #37 hit.
- 16 year old London born punk rocker Donna Tracy Boylan met Sham 69 vocalist Jimmy Pursey who began to manage her musical career resulting in this UK #37 ska punk effort which sounds like the Slits going new wave.

Woman peaked at #7 and in the UK would probably have done about the same I think if John Lennon had still been alive.
Assuming that, and that Roxy Music wouldn't have recorded and released "Jealous Guy", and ignoring any influence the changes to the TOTP appearances etc. would have been, the list of #1s at the end of 1980 and start of 1981 would be:
Abba - Supertrouper (3 wks, as was) St Winifred's School Choir - No One Quite Like Grandma (3 wks) Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry (1 wk) Adam & The Ants - Antmusic (2 wks) Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight (1 wk) Ultravox - Vienna (1 wk) Joe Dolce Music Theater - Shaddup You Face (3 wks) Adam & The Ants - Kings Of The Wild Frontier (1 wk) Shakin' Stevens - This Ole House (4 wks)
then Bucks Fizz as before..
