The year started badly in my opinion but has started getting stronger in the last few weeks and big songs are missing out on #1.
A clash here of 3 classics on the same week too..
19 May 1969:
1 ( 1 ) The Boxer - Simon & Garfunkel < 4th week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) Get Back - Beatles & Billy Preston 3 ( -- ) In The Ghetto - Elvis Presley 4 ( 7 ) Ragamuffin Man - Manfred Mann 5 ( 11 ) Too Busy Thinking About My Baby - Marvin Gaye 6 ( 5 ) I'm Livin' In Shame - Diana Ross & The Supremes (#5) 7 ( 6 ) Mercy - Ohio Express (#6) 8 ( 4 ) Behind A Painted Smile - Isley Brothers (#4) 9 ( 3 ) Plastic Man - Kinks (#2[1]) 10 ( -- ) Bad Moon Rising - Creedence Clearwater Revival
11 ( -- ) Living In The Past - Jethro Tull 12 ( 20 ) Dick-A-Dum-Dum - Des O'Connor 13 ( 9 ) Man Of The World - Fleetwood Mac (#9) 14 ( 21 ) Don't Let Me Down - Beatles 15 ( 12 ) Gitarzan - Ray Stevens (#12) 16 ( 16 ) More Today Than Yesterday - Spiral Starecase 17 ( -- ) Love Me Tonight - Tom Jones 18 ( 8 ) Pinball Wizard - Who (#1[4]) 19 ( 14 ) Grazin' In The Grass - Friends Of Distinction (#14) 20 ( 10 ) Hawaii Five-O - Ventures (#6)
21 ( -- ) Think It All Over - Sandie Shaw 22 ( 29 ) I'd Rather Go Blind - Chicken Shack 23 ( 18 ) Bluer Than Blue - Rolf Harris (#18) 24 ( 15 ) I Will See You There - Linda Kendrick (#11) 25 ( 26 ) My Friend - Roy Orbison 26 ( 17 ) Will You Be Staying After Sunday - Peppermint Rainbow (#14) 27 ( 13 ) Time Is Tight - Booker T & The MGs (#2[1]) 28 ( 23 ) Crosstown Traffic - Jimi Hendrix (#23) 29 ( -- ) Snake In The Grass - Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich 30 ( 19 ) My Way - Frank Sinatra (#5)
31 ( 27 ) My Sentimental Friend - Herman's Hermits (#27) 32 ( 25 ) Colour Of My Love - Jefferson (#22) 33 ( 30 ) These Eyes - Guess Who (#30) 34 ( 31 ) The Composer - Diana Ross & The Supremes (#31) 35 ( 22 ) The Israelites - Desmond Dekker And The Aces (#2[2]) 36 ( -- ) Day Is Done - Peter Paul & Mary 37 ( 24 ) Goodbye - Mary Hopkin (#7) 38 ( -- ) Groovy Baby - Microbe 39 ( 28 ) Michael And The Slipper Tree - Equals (#13) 40 ( 33 ) Swan Lake - Cats (#30)
-- ( 32 ) Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show - Neil Diamond (#10) -- ( 34 ) Badge - Cream (#20) -- ( 35 ) Come Back And Shake Me - Clodagh Rodgers (#4) -- ( 36 ) Dream Of Olwen - Second City Sound (#24) -- ( 37 ) Gimmie Gimme Good Lovin' - Crazy Elephant (#15) -- ( 38 ) I'll Be There - Jackie Trent (#31) -- ( 39 ) Snatching It Back - Clarence Carter (#17) -- ( 40 ) Hair - Cowsills (#21)
-- ( -- ) The River Is Wide - Grass Roots -- ( -- ) Heather Honey - Tommy Roe -- ( -- ) I Threw It All Away - Bob Dylan -- ( -- ) Where's The Playground Susie - Glen Campbell
This was a great set of new entries, and it's surprising Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick & Tich only enter at #29 but that's probably mostly because it was such a strong week.
Elvis Presley hasn't reached #1 on this chart since "Return To Sender" at the end of 1962. His country song "In The Ghetto" written by Mac Davis looks set to return him there... As Mac Davis himself would later sing.. oh Lord it's hard to be humble... Ok, that one was a bit of a novelty hit in 1981 but this one is a tale of a child growing up in bad circumstances and then turning to crime.
All that might mean that the classic "Bad Moon Rising" won't follow in the footsteps of "Proud Mary" and reach #1...
And behind that, we then have Jethro Tull's "Living In The Past" which sounds musically based on Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" with also a 5-beat rhythm. That one actually did get to #1 in 1961. Jethro Tull are the only act entering aside from the novelty Microbe who haven't had a #1, and lower down we see Bob Dylan failing to enter, and he has had a #1. Tommy Roe didn't quite get to the top with "Dizzy" but he also fails to chart. Well I said Microbe haven't reached #1 but this was a bunch of session musicians arranged by a DJ and it appears Dusty Springfield may have been among those on this.

-- ( -- ) Cissy Strut - Meters -- ( -- ) Nothing But A Heartache - Flirtations
The king claims the throne...
Henry Mancini's theme for Romeo & Juliet is the highest new entry. It was #1 in the USA too, and the tune was later used by Simon Bates on Radio One's "Our Tune" feature (over which he would tell some rather boring story of someone's romantic life then play the tune they chose that gives them a memory of it... I wouldn't want my own love life read out on the radio..).
The other new entry is not the original version of this song but an early one. Paul Weller covered the song on the Stanley Road album.

A week of a lot of new songs, but only 5 out of 13 of them make it into the chart. Family Dogg are a British band featuring Albert Hammond, but that song isn't on Spotify in spite of being a top 10 hit. Two Motown songs follow, and the Four Tops song was covered by Tindersticks in 2000.
Pentangle are a British folk group. Named after the 5-sided figure and in 1970 their song "Light Flight" will follow in the steps of Dave Brubeck and Jethro Tull (currently #6 this week) as a 5-beat tune. Their current song is not in that rhythm though.

-- ( -- ) The April Fools - Dionne Warwick -- ( -- ) Tomorrow Tomorrow - Bee Gees -- ( -- ) Boogaloo Party - Flamingos
And there you go.. Sometimes there are just 2 great classics on the same week and you feel you have to make both of them #1s, so first one of them gets there then the other. So move over now Elvis and allow Creedence Clearwater Revival to hit the top with their definitive classic.
Not sure how Tom Jones moved above Jethro Tull last week but it's been rightfully restored so Jethro Tull is #3 while Tom Jones remains at #4.
Of the new entries. The Beatles can't get the highest entry so probably won't get to #1 again. John Lennon's tale of some of the events around his marriage to Yoko Ono, especially the way the press followed them everywhere. This was the last ever Beatles #1 however we can't guarantee they won't get another one on here. (In fact they definitely will - with Real Love in 1996, but will "Come Together" or "Something" or get to #1 here?)
The song that beats it, Good Morning Starshine, is yet another song from the musical "Hair", which has so far provided hits for Nina Simone (Ain't Got No, I Got Life), Paul Jones (Aquarius), 5th Dimension (also Aquarius but together with Let The Sunshine In), and Cowsills (Hair).
Its own possible passage to #1 is likely to be blocked by a song due to chart next week that is potentially the single of the year.

I see you have charted The Supremes' The Composer.
Written by Smokey Robinson and continuing their recent trend at the time of barely a top 30 hit in the US it was never a UK single but I love it.

Yes. It contained the line "You're the number one in my personal chart" (or something like that). Couldn't help notice that line.

In the UK chart, "Proud Mary" was in the chart around this time. That was a US hit earlier in the year and reached #1 on this chart. "The Ballad Of John And Yoko" was #1 in the UK chart with that Edwin Hawkins Singers song at #2 behind it (that one failed to reach my chart)
Elvis Presley was climbing relatively slowly and would peak at #2 behind Thunderclap Newman, the song that replaced the Beatles on top.
This is the closest that there was to a UK #1 single by The Who, as Pete Townsend was involved in the band.

A second week at #1 for "Something In The Air". In 1993 the song was covered by Tom Petty, who died yesterday at the time of posting this chart.
Joe Dolan gets the highest entry above the UK and US #1 for Zager & Evans that looks into the future. We are closer to that year now than we were at the time, but still quite some way off.

I haven't posted the sporting winners yet but let's get into the next part of the year...

The upper end still holding still. Oliver has now spent a 5th week at #2. Joe Dolan after climbing from #11 to #6 could not break into the top 5 but goes down, but Kenny Rogers gets a climb to #5.
Meanwhile there are 2 entries at #6 and #8, the former is one I wasn't expecting for another 2 years but again in the US it was a hit earlier. Honky Tonk Women spent more weeks at #1 than any other Rolling Stones song in the UK and was also a long-running US #1 but may well not hit the top here. Meanwhile John Lennon, already at #3 (with the Beatles, but it's his song), has a new entry as the Plastic Ono Band which means there are two different singles referencing Yoko Ono in the chart, one with Yoko in the title and one with Ono in the artist.

Something In The Air - there certainly was. A rocket landing on the moon. That was the main world event that was happening this time as the first manned rocket landed on the moon with Neil Armstrong taking a small step for a man but a giant leap for mankind.
Meanwhile another Neil is on the brink of reaching #1 on this chart...
As for me, well I was just a 4-year old..

A quieter week for entries. For Ray Stevens it's another story, this time a super-hero who rescues a woman that another man keeps tying up.
A new #1 though, Neil Diamond with his anthem ahead of the Rolling Stones.

One American Jewish singer-songwriter replaces another at the top of the chart. For Bob Dylan it's his second #1, having reached the top previously with "Like A Rolling Stone". His 4th as a songwriter as the Peter Paul & Mary "Blowin' In The Wind" and The Byrds' "Mr Tambourine Man" also topped the chart. Neil Diamond also has another #1 as a songwriter with "I'm A Believer" getting to the top for the Monkees.
The Archies get the highest entry. A song I remember as a child playing in the car a few times. They are session musicians with Ron Dante singing lead vocal and Andy Kim among the songwriters as well as being a backing singer on it. Toni Wine provides a female vocal line.

I do feel I'm a bit behind in posting these, as my last playlist for listening covered most of November and so I'm 3 months ahead in what I'm listening to than where I am posting the chart. I have scored up to the end of October.
On this week there is no change in the top 3. The highest new entry comes from the Temptations with a song that reached #1 in the USA. I would say that of the Temptations songs (not including any in the later period and not including collaborations) this would be the 3rd most familiar to me. "My Girl" is the obvious one and the other one we haven't had yet.
Bobbie Gentry enters with her UK #1, a Burt Bacherach & Hal David song, also recorded by Dionne Warwick of course and later covered by Deacon Blue. Still, I would say "Ode To Billie Joe" is her main song for me..
Oliver follows up Good Morning Starshine with "Jean", a song that peaked at #2 in the USA. "Good Morning Starshine" spent 5 weeks at #2 on this chart, the joint longest run (in the 1960s) at that position for a song that didn't reach #1, shared with Barry McGuire's "Eve Of Destruction" in 1965.
