I need to ensure I post one a day to catch up.
The moment we've been waiting for:
6 September 1969:
1 ( 1 ) Lay Lady Lay - Bob Dylan < 4th week at #1 > 2 ( -- ) Space Oddity - David Bowie 3 ( 2 ) Viva Bobby Joe - Equals (#2[2]) 4 ( 4 ) Sugar Sugar - Archies 5 ( 11 ) I Can't Get Next To You - Temptations 6 ( 3 ) Marrakesh Express - Crosby Stills & Nash (#3) 7 ( 5 ) Get Together - Youngbloods (#5) 8 ( 8 ) Don't Forget To Remember - Bee Gees 9 ( 6 ) It's Getting Better - Mama Cass (#6) 10 ( 17 ) I'll Never Fall In Love Again - Bobbie Gentry

Moi Non Plus - Jane Birkin And Serge Gainsbourg (#19) 34 ( 33 ) These Eyes - Guess Who (#30) 35 ( 25 ) Curly - Move (#13) 36 ( 31 ) Put A Little Love In Your Heart - Jackie DeShannon (#23) 37 ( 32 ) Conversations - Cilla Black (#9) 38 ( 28 ) Give Peace A Chance - Plastic Ono Band (#4) 39 ( 35 ) Laughing - Guess Who (#26) 40 ( -- ) Tears In The Wind - Chicken Shack

-- ( -- ) Little Woman - Bobby Sherman -- ( -- ) Move Over - Steppenwolf -- ( -- ) This Girl Is A Woman Now - Gary Puckett & The Union Gap
Yes and perhaps it should have gone straight in at #1, it is that good and Bob Dylan has had a fair run so far, but let one songwriting genius move over for another.. well it definitely will happen next week.
That will actually mean that two UK #1s from 1975 will have reached #1 in my chart in 1969. As well as a UK #8 hit from 1971.
The second highest entry is also a classic, a song from Midnight Cowboy, and later covered by the Beautiful South just around the time of Harry Nilsson's death. (Mariah Carey had a cover of Without You in the chart at the same time).
Nobody's Child is an old country song from the 1940s that was a top 10 hit in 1969 for Karen Young.

-- ( -- ) When I Die - Motherlode -- ( -- ) Hare Krishna Mantra - Radha Krishna Temple
And then it happens. David Bowie climbs that place to #1. I think he'll be a major star in the 1970s. But then I think the band that falls 9 places to #40 this week will be too.. They just have a new sound to them that I think could go down well in a new decade.
Roy Orbison is back with a good song.

Still, if I do that then I will finish 1969 within 2 weeks.

A week when only 3 new songs entered the UK top 50 / US top 40 and only one of them was considered good enough to chart, and even that one not very high.
So the chart in general is stagnant although last week's highest entry by the Hollies does climb from #7 to #2 to challenge David Bowie for the top next week. Of course both of these singles would eventually reach #1 in the UK.
Fleetwood Mac and the Cufflinks also both move into the top 10. For Fleetwood Mac, this is a Peter Green composition and a bit of blues-rock. The Cufflinks' lead singer Ron Dante also sang lead vocals on the Archies' hit "Sugar Sugar" which is still in the chart but falling.

This week my playlist should start 1970. I started 1960 in February 2015. A lot has changed in my life since then. However very soon I will have a complete set of personal charts for the 1960s.
There is no planned break but I will want to do a chart of the decade, as well as one for the year of 1969.
A chart of the decade in the 1960s seems difficult as I'll be comparing pre-Beatles to post-Beatles with 1963 as the "bridge" year. Not just the Beatles but most of the great Phil Spector productions started around 1963 (with "Be My Baby" actually being my favourite single of that year).
Prior to that, we did have Joe Meek productions and some great Carole King & Gerry Goffin songs, and loads of great instrumentals.
I've been listening in the last few days to the top singles of 1960, 61, 62 and 63. The chart of the decade will be points-based though, which means when the turnover was a lot slower in 1960 and 1961 we will see bigger hits than the fast turnover of 1964.
Still, it will produce a great compilation of 60s hits covering all the years of that decade.

In October 1969 my brother was 1 year and 9 months old so I guess he wasn't very heavy. I was 4 years and 6 months old so not sure how strong I would have been to be able to carry him..
In any case, the Hollies have had a string of hits in this chart and hadn't yet had a #1 so now they have achieved one, and there's another 60s band with a load of hits that may do the same..
Not the Beatles - they've had loads of #1s. They may get another one in between though. And George Harrison hasn't written any of them yet - but he wrote Something. Also Here Comes The Sun but they didn't release that one as a single. He did co-write Cream's hit "Badge" too. And about 19 years later he will record with the singer at #5 and the one at #32 in a group together, just around the time the song at #1 here finally gets there in the UK, and just before the singer at #5 dies.
Technically Long Shot Kick De Bucket has also been a UK #1 as it was a track on the Specials Live EP. (That's the one that has Too Much Too Young on it).

The Hollies remain at #1 but Graham Nash's other band doesn't quite make it into the chart. Also not making it in is Marv Johnson, who had only the 2nd #1 of the 1960s (thus the second #1 in the chart history as it stands now).
The Beatles look set to take over at #1 next week. The highest new entry by R.B. Greaves was a #2 hit in the USA.

In the UK it surprisingly only peaked at #4. In this chart it gets the Beatles a 15th number one, but the first one that was written by George Harrison rather than Lennon/McCartney (often written by only one of those).
Not yet having been called #1, a band that started off as Brian Poole's backing group then became a fully fledged band of their own, have not written many of their own hits but did write this one.
Stevie Wonder gets a new entry with a song that reached #2 in the UK. Another entry for John Lennon, either about getting off drugs or about getting food poisoning from Christmas leftovers. You decide.
So Harrison at #1, Lennon at #5 and entering at #24 but no luck this time around for McCartney's brother Mike McGear as his attempt at Lord Baden Powell's scout anthem was just too silly novelty and we're still a bit far from Christmas to get away with it. Paul himself has 2 of his compositions in the chart medleyed together at #30 this week.

-- ( -- ) So Good Together - Andy Kim -- ( -- ) Durham Town (The Leavin') - Roger Whittaker -- ( -- ) Eli's Coming - Three Dog Night
We can say this to the Tremeloes: You are number one..
Leavin' On A Jet Plane was written by John Denver and was Peter Paul & Mary's biggest hit in the UK and the USA. In order to be their biggest hit on this chart it would have to get to #1, as that is something they managed twice in 1963. Among the entries are 2 songs by Creedence Clearwater Revival. In 3 weeks from this chart double A-sides will no longer be credited separately in the US chart which will effect the policy here. I will pick one preferred song and chart it. Only if different sides chart in the UK and US separately will I also chart them separately.
The entry at #23 eventually would be a UK top 10 hit in 1970 and would also be covered by Bananarama with a gender change. The entry at #33 bares no resemblance to a George Harrison-composed Beatles song.

A second week at #1 for the Tremeloes as Peter Paul & Mary put in a big challenge for the top. The highest two new entries are both based on a similar lyrical subject of trying to solve the world's problems, but maybe a different way of going about things.
The Onion Song would be the last duet hit for Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, as the latter died of cancer shortly afterwards. In spite of that this song was not a top 40 hit in the USA, but it was a top 10 hit in the UK.
Roger Cook & Roger Greenaway wrote hits for the Fortunes and also performed as David & Jonathan and were behind that Whistling Jack Smith hit among others. Roger Cook is a singer with Blue Mink and Roger Greenaway wrote this song with him. Madeline Bell is a black American singer who had a #3 hit in this chart with "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me". So in particular we have a white British male and a black American female singing together on this song about making the world a "melting pot". Their description of Chinese people wouldn't go down too well nowadays though..

-- ( -- ) Love Is All - Malcolm Roberts
In spite of the pressure from Peter Paul & Mary, the Tremeloes manage a 3rd week at #1. There are several hits knocking on the door for next week though.
The highest new entry by B.J. Thomas was written by Burt Bacherach and Hal David and features in the film Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid.
The second highest entry is an old song dating back to just before World War I and is a tale about war and two little boys who became soldiers. The Australian multi-talented Rolf Harris recorded his version and won over the hearts of many. We'll pass over what else he got up to.. I know this song is very much disliked though by many. Apart from rhyming a word with itself (rhymes "two" with "two"), it's not a terrible song really, just a bit dated for 1969.. But clearly it isn't going to get to #1 either.

Last month of the 1960s so we'd better get ready for the acts of the future. Two debutants get the highest entries and they're certainly different - Led Zeppelin are a British rock group and this is on the heavier side of rock, a bit like Gun last year but we haven't heard of them since.. I think Led Zeppelin may be more successful with hit albums rather than singles.
The Jackson Five meanwhile are 5 brothers from the USA who are still children. Michael, the lead singer on this song, is just 11... Diana Ross seems to be promoting them..
Whether or not Michael Jackson is even the youngest act entering the chart this week we have the voice of a child in Jim Reeves's entry but that isn't really a child or even a boy, it's a woman immitating a little boy's voice, and whilst we know the song must date back at least as far back as 1964, it actually dates back a whole decade. It's silly and cute but scrapes in as a seasonal hit.

Not a great week for new entries this week. James Brown made some classic songs and has had two #1s on this chart but most of his music is just formulaic and all sounds the same. Probably why aside from 4 of his older hits (I Got You, Man's Man's World, Papa's Got A Brand New Bag and Sex Machine) you probably wouldn't actually remember any of the others.. The first of those 2 got to #1 in my chart, Brand New Bag #14, Sex Machine hasn't showed up yet (hit in 1970) and the other 3 were his only UK hits in the 1960s. Get Up Offa That Thing was a moderate hit in the 1970s and of course Living In America was a big hit for him in the 1980s.

Always found DRATS' Someday We'll Be Together somewhat dull.
Maybe it was just the sentiment behind it which saw it go to #1 in the US and become their biggest selling single there although it ws only a middling UK hit.
Illustrates the mess at the time. Recorded by Diana with backing singers and Johnny Bristol issued as Diana and Supremes although originally intended as her first solo single but the other track recorded at the same session These Things Will Keep Me Loving You and intended as a solo single was eventually pulled.

Among all the great songs by the Motown artist there is also loads of also-ran music.
Marvin Gaye above having another big hit and he with the Supremes have been the most successful Motown acts in my chart in the 1960s but he had a few flops too. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles had one #1, a few other big hits but also many that were just making up the numbers.

Rock out the 60s... the above is the formal Christmas chart of 1969, not the one that will follow.
Marmalade had the first UK #1 of 1969 with a Beatles cover. Maybe they'll have the first NM #1 of the 1970s with a far superior song they wrote themselves.
Dutch rockers Shocking Blue get the next highest entry with a song later covered by the same group that covered the song at #24 this week.
Leapy Lee follows up "Little Arrows" a year later and the Archies don't take quite so long to follow up "Sugar Sugar" but did anyone even remember they had other hits?

I will shortly be compiling the chart of the year, which will be posted in this topic.
I will also be posting the first chart of 1970, hopefully tomorrow. I want to start my new decade at the same time as the person I mentioned..
The chart of the decade will also be compiled and counted down in its own topic. I'm not sure how many positions it will contain but it will be based on points and probably therefore totally inaccurate as the later years were in general far stronger than the earlier ones.
