As it is not his fault he is able to participate, I'm happy to take the sum of weekly players scores and divide by the number of players this week, and give him that as his score. Sounds like a good idea. I'll try and remember over the weekend to do that for last week too. I think it is fine if you miss one week, but any more than one week consecutively has to be penalised, otherwise it's an easy ride. For a second week perhaps it could be a weekly average -20, for a third week a weekly average -40 and so on.

I make it that Shireblogger should score 246 last week (average 2211/9). Will edit into the post.
If I miss next week don't worry about doing an average for me. Will probably give it a miss after my negative score this week...

Think I may be retiring as well, just awful at the moment, up and down I could take, not just being crap.

In the past if someone knew in advance they couldn't participate, they would either ask for the predictions early, or they would predict on all the top 2 division fixtures which would be adjusted to whatever ones were selected. That was when we only took fixtures from the top 2 divisions.
The problem of giving someone a score based on their own average is that some weeks are more difficult that others. A better system would be to weight their score on the total of those of other predictors.
So if one's score is on average 8% of the total of the others, on the week you miss you get a score that will give you 8% of the points of that week.

Really? I have no recollection of that at all.

Hi. Thanks for all the effort and consideration that has gone into keeping me in the game. But, actually, I think I should score 0 for the missed weeks. I know it means I'll have a lot of ground to make up, but it won't stop me playing.
In the bad old days of the pools, Littlewoods didn't pay average winnings to people who forgot to post their coupon that week. Same should apply here, except for situations like sudden serious ill health.

Hopeful for Southampton, just depends what affect Woy has.
About 20 years ago Mr Hodgson was manager at Blackburn Rovers. So he really was Roy of the Rovers back then. Didn't help them much - was sacked in the 1998-99 season which ended with them relegated only 4 years after winning the Premier League.

You were offline and unable to predict because fixtures were being done week on week, and not monthly, that isn't your fault, I say the average score stands.
