Last week 11 songs on the list, this week just 3 and they all chart. However none of them enter higher than #25, and the highest is Mr Bloe's instrumental that carries the artist name and would peak at #2 in the UK. Also one that isn't on Spotify. (Who are The Cheaters? They did a cover of it.. but they didn't call it Groovin' With The Cheaters..)

Another quiet week for new entries. The highest is by Melanie (Safka) with the Edwin Hawkins Singers, a song they performed at Woodstock.
The only one that doesn't make it in is another football song, this time about Chelsea who reached the FA Cup final. (Sporting achievements are normally done at the halfway stage of these topics).

As the Moody Blues now clock up a 4th week at #1, the Beatles could well be the one to replace them as they get an entry at #8 with what will be their final single proper. A few re-issues of some old songs around 1976, a medley in 1982 and then of course the 1995-96 Anthology material, but this is their last single proper as a band together.
Elvis Presley's revival continues with what was his big UK #1 of 1970, and lower down Gerry Monroe takes us back retro-style to the old jazz music.

The Beatles edge closer to getting their 16th #1. The highest entry this week is another song that spent 6 weeks at the top of the UK chart. It was written by Wayne and Dunbar, although there was no "Wayne", that was actually Holland-Dozier-Holland. There was a Dunbar though, he wrote the lyrics, Holland Dozier Holland together wrote the music. It originally had more verses and explained more of what happened between the couple but a lot got edited out.

-- ( -- ) Love Like A Man - Ten Years After -- ( -- ) Hey Mister Sun - Bobby Sherman -- ( -- ) Groupy Girl - Tony Joe White
The Moody Blues refuse to budge and stay a 6th week on top denying the Beatles. The rock group Free enter at #5 looking to perhaps instead be the ones to get to #1 next.
Three Dog Night have not had that much success on this chart so far, but now is the one we were waiting for. It was written by Randy Newman who also wrote "Simon Smith & His Amazing Dancing Bear" which was a #3 hit for Alan Price. It seems that members of the Animals liked recording his songs as Eric Burdon & The Animals also recorded this song (Mama Told Me Not To Come) before Three Dog Night also covered it and released it as a single. (One you might have not known was a cover...). Tom Jones would also have a hit with it in 2000. He's in the chart at the moment, at #19.
Ball Of Confusion was one of the Temptations biggest UK hits, but wasn't as big a hit in the USA. Remember that "My Girl" only just scraped the top 50 first time around for them in the UK, not being a big hit until 1992.
Cliff is back with a song that gave him a top 10 hit, co-written by Geoff Stephens, and entering below all of those, a song that was #1 in the UK for 7 weeks, written by Ray Dorset. It contains that dodgy line "Have a drink have a drive".

-- ( -- ) Spirit In The Dark - Aretha Franklin -- ( -- ) Mississippi Queen - Mountain -- ( -- ) Check Out Your Mind - Impressions
And that completes 7 weeks for the Moody Blues, one of my favourite songs of all time and therefore gets the 7-week run on top. I can say though that the quality of the chart that has built up behind it in the top 11 at least is fairly strong.
I mentioned the 2000 cover by Tom Jones of Mama Told Me Not To Come. You'll also recall an Amy Grant cover of Big Yellow Taxi and of course Paul Young's cover of "Love Of The Common People". Whilst Joni Mitchell did write her hit and that is the original, Love Of The Common People was older than Nicky Thomas's version. (Do I dare mention a cover version of The Long And Winding Road that actually made it to #1 in the UK chart?)

One thing I have noticed about 1970 so far is a drop in quantity of songs. The playlists are made from US top 40 and UK top 50 entries and they are normally up to 40 songs but usually a bit shorter.
In 1970 this has been regularly covering 5 weeks, compared to 4 weeks in most of the later 60s years.
This could be caused by a lot more overlap between the UK and US chart hits, but it could also simply be a slowing down. The large number of long-running UK #1s is noticeable and those can go hand in hand, although in the UK we had a slowdown of #1s in 1992 but an increase in songs charting.

-- ( -- ) Teach Your Children - Crosby Stills & Nash -- ( -- ) I Want To Take You Higher - Sly & The Family Stone -- ( -- ) Westbound #9 - Flaming Ember
Finally a new #1 as the classic rock song by Free hits the top. In the UK chart it got stuck for 5 weeks at #2 behind Mungo Jerry. It then recharted several times, including #11 in 1978 as part of an EP and again in 1991.
The second highest entry is about 200 years old at the time as a lyric and 150 years old as a melody, and is familiar as the movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony. Another musician with Rios in his name but unrelated, Waldo De Los Rios, was the producer behind this and his orchestra would also record Mozart's 40th symphony. (The first movement of Beethoven's 5th would later be recorded as a disco hit around 1976). Particularly popular in Germany (from where the song originates, of course), Miguel Rios was #1 for 15 weeks there with this song.
The entry at #28 is by a solo John Phillips, we've had a solo Mama Cass too before. He's one of the Mamas and the Papas. The song is not the same as the one Pussycat got to #1 with in 1976.

Free remain a second week at #1. The top end of the chart is very strong and two more classic songs enter this week, yet we are still only getting a small number of new entries each week.
The Carpenters enter high - they are a brother and sister duo, Richard and Karen Carpenter, and the song was written by Bacharach & David.
Cat Stevens charts with an acoustic ballad.
Thunderclap Newman follow up their massive #1 with an epic song that lasts about 9 minutes, at least in the version I was listening to.
5th Dimension get the final entry with a hit from the US chart.

The sporting winners of 1970 will go in this post.
England's national football team were not one of them. They headed "back home" from Mexico after blowing a 2-0 lead against West Germany in the quarter-final.

Joni Mitchell's folk song takes over from Free at #1. Both have mentions of parking cars in their lyrics. How long it can remain there with the Kinks getting a high entry is something we will see. A classic song about someone who "pulled" a drag queen.. Remember that scene in Bachelor Party when the drag queen went to the toilet and urinated standing up?
Stevie Wonder with another of his classics. Not yet had a #1.
Hotlegs: sound like an interesting band musically but not sure about that name...

The Kinks classic hits the top, restricting Joni Mitchell to just one week, so now officially a #1 for Ray Davies in 5 different decades (albeit one crossed between two). Only in the 1990s did he never manage a #1. (When I do 1956-59 he won't get a #1 in there either).
B.J. Thomas gets the highest new entry with a country song later covered by Elvis Presley.
Crosby Stills Nash & Young get political, with a song about the USA's own version of Tiananmen Square, albeit at a smaller scale, where 4 students were shot dead by armoured guards at Kent State University on 4th May 1970, where they were protesting about the Vietnam War. This caused a fair uprising.
David Gates's band Bread get a new entry with a ballad.

I'm not sure that this hasn't been the case through most of the retro years so far, but the series of #1s has been extremely good this year, the #2s are generally pretty strong and most of what has made the top 5 but once we go down below about #15 they are just making up the numbers.
The main reason I choose to do all this in the first place was to make it easier to create oldies playlists.

Chicago are an American rock band and have not gone "soft" yet. Their first single was a cover of the Spencer Davis Group's "I'm A Man" so I didn't chart that but this one is also uptempo rock. This song also doesn't contain any noticeable key-changes. (Having said that "Hard Habit To Break" is probably my favourite of all their songs).
Marmalade scrape in at #40. They had the first #1 of the year with "Reflections Of My Life", which topped the chart for 5 weeks.

Edwin Starr's classic gets him the highest new entry this week. Probably aimed at Vietnam in particular. The song was also covered by Frankie Goes To Hollywood on their Welcome To The Pleasuredome album.
Not making it in is a debut for the Three Degrees. When will we see them again, I wonder?

The highest new entry is one of those songs that tells a tale. First recorded by Chairmen of the Board and actually written by one of their members, Clarence Carter covered it and changed it slightly to do more narration than was in the original.
Aside from the Kinks at #1 and a couple of others it's been mostly the Americans leading the way in the last few weeks (plus the occasional Canadian).
I think we definitely need to find some new top British acts too. DBM & T are Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich with Dave Dee absent.

A 5th week at #1 for the Kinks, becoming the 4th single to pass the 5-week mark this year and could become the 3rd to make it to 6 weeks. As they do, Ike & Tina Turner, with Ike really performing on it, get an entry. In 1966 they had a 6-week #1 which kept the Kinks "Sunny Afternoon" off #1.
As Lady D'Arbanville drops down the chart, a different Cat Stevens song gets the highest entry, this one covered by Jimmy Cliff.

The Kinks get a 6th week at #1 with Lola, so like they UK chart of 1970 we have had one 7-week #1, two of 6 weeks and one of 5 weeks. Ok the UK had a Christmas #1 also stay on top for 6 weeks but Freda Payne hadn't entered yet at this stage. Deep Purple peaked at #2 behind that song, and that gets a high entry this week.
We previously had Marvin Gaye reach #1 with I Heard It Through The Grapevine even though his wasn't the first charted version. Now the table is turned somewhat as he recorded the first hit version of Ain't No Mountain High Enough with Tami Terrell but it's his turn for someone else to record a superior cover version, and Diana Ross, formerly of the Supremes has done a much better job of it. It is actually my favourite Diana Ross solo single so if it doesn't get to #1 it's likely she never will (as a soloist). Of course we're about to see her make an appearance in our 1986 retro chart very soon. This version reached #1 in the USA, and the song was written by Ashford & Simpson.
Yet another Creedence Clearwater Revival hit, and the original Bobby Sherman version of a song that White Plains would cover in the UK chart. That version won't chart here, this one got to #3 in the USA.
The next entry below that is the debut for Hot Chocolate.

Diana Ross gets what is marked as her first #1 but it is only her first solo #1, as she had a #1 also with the Supremes in 1967 with "The Happening". Had that one been credited to Diana Ross & The Supremes I may have labelled this her 2nd #1.
James Brown has now appeared in our 1986 retro chart too, of course. Diana Ross hasn't yet appeared but will soon. Aretha Franklin was around with "Who's Zoomin' Who" in 1986. The song she enters with here is, I think, the one that got her eliminated from Haven Factor. Not sure why - a bit slower than many of her others but it's quite good.
The actual highest new entry is by Anne Murray, a Canadian female singer. Seems a bit strange to have a song called Snowbird enter the chart in August, but it's a good song.
Desmond Dekker gets another reggae hit. This reached #2 in the UK chart. He seems to have left The Aces behind on this one, it's credited simply to Desmond Dekker.

A second week at #1 for Diana Ross - that song was written by Ashford & Simpson, whilst her previous songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland had started their own Invictus label on which Freda Payne's single was released and they co-wrote that, and Chairmen Of The Board were also on their label.
Neil Diamond gets the highest new entry. He's already had one #1 of his own plus he wrote one for the Monkees.
Deep Purple are #2 and there's more heavy rock with Black Sabbath getting a new entry at #11. In those days I considered these two fairly "heavy" rock but they're quite light compared with some later metal and in particular neither Ian Gillan nor Ozzy Osbourne were screaming on these tracks.
Montego Bay is a summer hit obviously. Candida has been credited here to Dawn but we sometimes see it as Tony Orlando & Dawn or similar, and for Tony Orlando it's a comeback, having had a #5 hit 9 years ago in 1961 with "Bless You".
Not quite making it in is Ernie, the Sesame Street puppet, with a silly song about a rubber duck. Not sure how I'd have taken to it at the time, as a 5-year old.
In any case it hasn't escaped me, having been a major fan, that Debbie Gibson was born around this time, actually on 31st August. The US #1 at the time of her birth was "War" by Edwin Starr. That reached #2 on this chart but is on the way down. "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" did reach #1 in the USA but it wasn't there on this week.
