After getting to #1 last year with "Call Me Number One", the Tremeloes follow a similar formula for this song and get another high entry, and will be looking potentially to be called number one again.
Linda Ronstadt gets a new entry as a solo artist, she previously charted with Stone Poneys. Had it not been for some boy band off the block she'd have achieved a UK #1 in 1989.

El Condor Pasa was written by Paul Simon but based on a Peruvian song he originally thought was out of copyright but turned out not to be. When the estate of the copyright holder challenged him he was very happy to quickly settle the score.
This is the second version of Woodstock to reach the chart, the first was by Crosby Stills Nash & Young. Its songwriter Joni Mitchell has scored a #1 hit for her own in the interim.
Thus the songwriters for this weeks entries all come from the American continent, from the USA, from Canada and from Peru.
El Condor Pasa has been sampled again in 2016 by Fiddlers Green in their hit "Down" in addition to Bella Ciao from 1906. By 2016 I assume both songs were out of copyright but they borrowed a few of Paul Simon's lyrics too. That song reached NM #3. It also entered the chart at #10.

A 5th week at #1 for Neil Diamond's "Cracklin' Rosie". The biggest challengers now appear to be Simon & Garfunkel and the Carpenters. Incidentally I mentioned "Down" by Fiddlers Green which entered at #10 on a week in 2016. That also climbed to #4 on its second chart week. On that week though the song that had been #1 fell to #5.
We've Only Just Begun was composed by Roger Nichols and Paul Williams - originally just as a short clip for a commercial but then Richard Carpenter heard it and thought it had potential single success so he got them to write a bit more to make it into a full song.

The Carpenters leap from #9 to #1 to get to the top for the first time, having not made it past #3 with "(They Long To Be) Close To You" earlier in the year.
The highest new entry goes "Our house, is a very very very fine house, with 2 cats in the yard". A later song of that title would go "our house, in the middle of the street.."
Christie and Freda Payne both follow up what were UK #1s with lesser known songs.

-- ( -- ) Super Bad - James Brown
Not much still on the new entry front - that will explode right at the end of the year. So an easy second week on top, while Simon & Garfunkel climb to #2. Julie Felix, who recorded her version of the song earlier in the year, does finally get to enter herself. That she also enters the chart in January 2013 gave her the record of the oldest female vocalist to chart at the time.
A record it won't give her is the biggest gap between hits, as the act currently at #5 in the chart above, Matthews' Southern Comfort, have suddenly entered my chart again on 10 February 2018. However that song has entered only at #80 whereas "Tiger Eyes" by Julie Felix peaked at #8, so if we restrict our records to only hits that reached a good enough position, she may well get that record too. As it is we will see how high "Heaven Is Here" can climb, but it might not make the top 20.

A new number one hit for T. Rex, but another quiet week for new entries.
Following the success of the Cowsills as a family band, we now have the Partridge Family, who feature in a TV series, a kind of soap-opera band. Shirley Jones has the same birthday as me but is 31 years old (and thus exactly 1 year older than Herb Alpert). As of 2018 she is still alive, unlike David Cassidy who played her son in the series but was actually her step-son when she married his father Jack Cassidy, but whilst he acted in the series, he didn't sing in the band. In 1970 David Cassidy was 20 years old, so actually Shirley Jones is only 16 years older than him.

T-Rex remain at #1, Christie's lesser known country-style follow-up to Yellow River climbs up to #3 and the Partridge Family move up to #5.
Jimi Hendrix died on 18 September whilst staying over in London. It appears he may have drunk too much or taken too many drugs, because he choked on his vomit. A total waste of talent - his latest album Electric Ladyland contained a track called Voodoo Chile which lasted around 15 minutes, but there's a shortened version he recorded called Voodoo Child (Slight Return) which is actually the correct title of the single, but as they put Voodoo Chile on the label at the time, that is what I have called it here. Only the shorter version contains the famous riff. You also now know where the Bluetones got that phrase "Slight Return" from.

T-Rex stay at #1 and Jimi Hendrix threatens to take over and achieve a posthumous #1 like he did in the UK. I will say the challengers for the top are relatively weak at the moment but will get far stronger over the last few weeks of the year.

Voodoo Chile climbs to #1, like it did in the UK this week. It's the 3rd single this year to top both the UK and NM charts, the others were Edison Lighthouse and Simon & Garfunkel. In the UK it only remained on top for 1 week, and the same could happen here. In the UK, Dave Edmunds leapt from #16 to #1 the following week but here the threat is more likely to come from Badfinger.
McGuinness Flint are a duo with those surnames. Dave Edmunds does enter at #19 - this was a cover version and he'd originally planned to cover "Let's Work Together" but when Canned Heat covered that earlier in the year he changed his plan and heard this song, thought it had a similar structure, so covered that instead. He has been in the chart once before, as part of Love Sculpture in 1968. In the current chart era Dave Edmunds did get to #1 in 1979 with "Girls Talk".
A Haven Factor winner, the Supremes get into the chart with Stoned Love, their biggest UK hit without Diana Ross. Not so good in Haven Factor, Andy Williams also gets a new entry. Of the other acts in this chart, Status Quo and The Temptations both have been Haven Factor acts.
According to my quick memory, Jimi Hendrix is the 3rd artist to have a posthumous number one. Buddy Holly reached #1 in 1960 with "True Love Ways" and then Otis Redding in 1968 with "(Sitting On The) Dock Of The Bay". In the UK, Jim Reeves had a posthumous #1 but whilst he has had a few posthumous hits on this chart, including "Distant Drums", he hasn't come close to a #1. Eddie Cochran came close in 1961 when "Weekend" peaked at #2. In the UK he did have a posthumous #1 in 1960 shortly after his death with "Three Steps To Heaven", and Buddy Holly had one in 1959, and when I do the 50s he'll almost certainly have one too. In fact, in the poll of top #1s, "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" was my highest placed 1950s song.

"No Matter What" was written by members of Badfinger - Pete Ham was one of them. He lived in Golders Green. Their previous hit "Come And Get It" was written by Paul McCartney. George Harrison was also a friend of Pete Ham and wrote and recorded a song "Going Down To Golders Green" about his visits. Of course in 1998 a different song of the same title would get to #1 in the UK.
Raymond O'Sullivan recorded under the name of Gilbert but didn't really want to as he thought nobody would take him seriously. He makes his debut this week.
Originally just called Bandwagon, but now putting their singer Johnny Johnson at the forefront, they were bigger in the UK than in the US, but their songs are mostly not found on Spotify, and this one is among those.

-- ( -- ) Lonely Days - Bee Gees -- ( -- ) Broken Hearted - Ken Dodd -- ( -- ) Amazing Grace - Judy Collins
George Harrison is the second member of the Beatles to get a hit outside the band as he enters with "My Sweet Lord". This song does sound a bit like the Chiffons' "He's So Fine", a song that peaked at #5 on this chart in 1963. They then had two #3 hits with "One Fine Day" and "Sweet Talkin' Guy". Robert Mack wrote "He's So Fine".
The second entry is by Dawn, a follow up to "Candida". Tony Orlando is sometimes credited. This song is noticeable for its use of sound effects and maybe back in 1970 this kind of song was innocent and acceptable. Not sure how well it would go down now to propose to a neighbour in that manner. (The "I Love You" to someone he doesn't know personally is certainly a bit creepy... but then are we supposed to pick apart lyrics to pop songs like this?)

Right at Christmas week you don't expect so many big songs but here we have a proper debut for Elton John. He's appeared on various hits previously as a session musician but now he's charting of his own right. Not only has he debuted at #4 but he manages to get 2 of his songs entering in the same week, as Aretha Franklin has covered another of his songs and entered the chart with it.
A bit lower we have a country song by Lynn Anderson. Originally recorded by a man, but in spite of the diamond ring line this works and is considered the definitive recording of the song.
Stephen Stills is the "Stills" of Crosby Stills & Nash (and sometimes Young).
John Paul Joans though is not a member of Led Zeppelin, thus the different spelling of his last name, which really is Jones.

Apeman not a Kink's track I am familiar with.
Lynn Anderson's Rose Garden a good listen but I've heard a version by Sandie Shaw I rather enjoy.

I have already compiled the final chart of 1970 so I could compile the chart of the year and listen to it today.
Not knowing in advance when they would enter, I would have expected My Sweet Lord, Apeman, Your Song and Rose Garden to all reach #1, but obviously My Sweet Lord didn't and Rose Garden almost certainly won't too. It's just a matter of whether Rocket Man can replace Apeman at #1.
The Kinks are the only act to manage more than one #1 in 1970. Aside from Apeman and Lola, they had a #4 hit with Victoria.

Some future stats:
- The Kinks will replace Elton John at #1 in 1983. Will the reverse happen here? - As of to date, Elton John's last appearance on a #1 was the first #1 of 2009 and Ray Davies's on the last #1 of 2009, which actually reached #1 on a chart dated 26 December.
Ray Davies has offically appeared on a #1 in the 1960s, 70s, 80s, 00s and 10s but not the 1990s. The 00s and 10s was the same song though that crossed over the decades.

My general opinion of 1970 as a year was that whilst it didn't have the same buzz as the later 60s years and possibly not as many great songs, it had far bigger hits.
On listening to the countdown of the chart of the year, the song that was a big hit but should have been a bigger one, and was the "discovery" hit of the year, was the Peddlers "Girlie P.S. I Love You", and the reason it wasn't a bigger hit is because I'm convinced the actual single release wasn't what I was listening to but an album version and that the single release was much shorter. (The version I have is 6 mins, 33 seconds, there's one on youtube which is 4 mins 30s).
Anyway I hope to put in the countdown of the year soon.
