1st June 1997 - 7th June 1997New number one with The Seahorses taking over the top spot, 1997 was huge for The Seahorses, they were only formed in 1996 when John Squire left The Stone Roses and formed his own band. The final piece of the jigsaw was when a friend of Squire's guitar tech saw Chris Helme busking outside Woolworths in York, by the end of 1997 they had a #2 album, this #3 single and another 3 top 20 singles, but the band fell apart as quickly as it was put together and only recorded the one album, highest new entry is Paranoid Android by Radiohead, great song, good but weird video so an obvious choice for track of the week 1. Radiohead remain at the top spot, No Doubt re-enter as he highest new entry because this was the songs highest chart run and any excuse to chart it again so track of the week goes to the second highest new entry Waltzing Along by James. at #28 and #63 we have two songs from The Mollusk, the bands sixth studio album, It is a multi-genre concept album with a dark nautical theme, with most songs incorporating elements from psychedelia and/or sea shanties while also featuring a heavy progressive rock influence. Dean Ween described the album as "the only record that I ever felt really confident about" and "my favorite record we've ever done." The Mollusk was a direct influence on the influential animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants. Stephen Hillenburg, the show's creator, contacted the band shortly after the album's release, also requesting a song from them which later became "Loop de Loop", and the track "Ocean Man" is played during the end credits of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.

6th July 1997 - 12th July 1997
Ocean Colour Scene - Hundred Mile High City replaces Radiohead at the top spot, with the highest new entry this week from Ween, Ocean Man is the crown jewel from their multi-genre nautical themed concept album The Mollusk, this song really had a huge revival when it was played during the end credits of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. next up at #22 "How the West Was Won and Where It Got Us" by R.E.M. this one was released as the fourth and final single from their tenth studio album New Adventures in Hi-Fi in 1997 but only released in Germany and Japan, great song though

Yeah biggest drop this week. It had stalled, I can only take small doses of Sash and couldn't chart it any higher so it had a mid 2000s indie rock style exit from my chart 18th one week, gone the next

27th July 1997 - 2nd August 1997
Ocean Man claims the top spot, it really is Ween's finest moment, they must have been on LSD when writing a dark nautical concept album but this one is a pop gem, b**** by Meredith Brooks is an obvious choice for highest new entry, California Dreamin' re-enters the UK chart with its highest chart position over 30 years after its original release, a quick google search reckons a Carling Premier commercial in 1997 was responsible for the song peaking at #9. Other new entries in my top 40 include The Offspring's 5th single from Ixnay on the Hombre at #32 which was a #5 hit in the American rock chart, the Backstreet Boys classic Everybody (Backstreet's Back) at #36 and Kara's Flowers at #38 who are an early incarnation of Maroon 5, their early sound was very indie pop

Sorry but not installing Verve as no1 is a shame. Even if you were a fan of Botswana rain forest relaxing music, this is a must of every pop music listener and chart freak...

It was close, I was tempted to give it a token week at #1 but it didnt feel right, #2 isn't a bad consolation prize. It is a classic, all be it an overplayed one, I prefer Sonnet and Lucky Man from Urban Hymns

Yeah well it is your chart after all but still... I feel it like a prototype of all no1s in the history. What's a chart worth if song like this gets not there. It must have been a super competition of bonafide classics to prevent this reaching no1. Give me a break but is OCS's song a better one?

To me yeah the OCS song is better. To you the Verve song is better
To the British public Puff Daddy kept Bittersweet Symphony off number one!
To the Rolling Stones, they would say the sample The Verve used from the Andrew Loog Oldham orchestral cover of the Rolling Stones' song "The Last Time" is the prototype of all no1s in the history
Its all subjective, there is no definitive better or worse

Well won't argue, again, it is your own backyard. But I accept the existence of such thing as a "classic". Wouldn't want to go against it if recreating history unless absolutely necessary which in my view is a situation where you have two or more of such classics against each other and have to decide.
