Possibly the best song I never charted or even bought, years of MTV2 play turned it into a classic

21st July 1996 - 27th July 1996
A second week at the top for Nada Surf and a fairly slow week see's a relatively unchanged top 10, my highest new entry this week is by American alternative rock band Ween formed in the mid 80's by brothers Gene and Dean Ween, they were one of the more creative bands in the 90's, out of nowhere they decided to release a country album called "12 Golden Country Greats" with p*ss Up The Rope being the lead single but it is their 1997 multi-genre concept album with a dark nautical theme, with most songs incorporating elements from psychedelia and/or sea shanties while also featuring a heavy progressive rock influence that is my favourite of their albums

Deep Blue Something claim the top spot, they might be a one hit wonder but what a hit, they were actually a pretty good band and had half a dozen decent songs. "Sell Out" reached #1 in my chart in 2002 when it reached the UK chart as part of an EP. I had its original year down as 1997, so even with that it appears you've charted it a year early.

"Sell Out" reached #1 in my chart in 2002 when it reached the UK chart as part of an EP. I had its original year down as 1997, so even with that it appears you've charted it a year early. Sell Out was never released in any form in 1997 as far as I know, it only had a promo release in 1996 around the same time the album was released August 13, 1996 www.discogs.com/Reel-Big-Fish-Sell-Out/master/734596It did make the modern rock tracks chart in 1997 at #10, but that was the radio catching up with the promo/album version of the song from 1996, not a new single released in 1997, I have carefully researched every song that enters my charts, I just have different rules to your chart, I chart album tracks too and the album came out 11 days before this chart so it is not charted early, the song was released both as a promo (its only original release) and on the album at this point.

Kula Shaker score their first #1 with Hey Dude, highest new entry is the excellent pop masterpiece that is Lovefool by The Cardigans, REM are in at #20 with New Test Lepper, I have no idea why this wasn't an official single, it was released as a promo in Germany, they made a video for it in 1997 and it features on their best of, considering the band released three albums worth of great singles and this album track makes their best of makes me think it was always meant as a single but the record label had other ideas, maybe the term Lepper wasn't PC enough? who knows, great song though

29th September 1996 - 5th October 1996
In to October we go and we have a new #1 by Swedish pop rockers The Cardigans, this was just a fantastic song, the video was pretty good too. My highest new entry was a relative flop by Weezer only charting at #50 in the uk, their darker, more abrasive sound on their new record (Pinkerton) DID NOT go down well at the time and it was voted "one of the worst albums of 1996" in a Rolling Stone reader poll. However, the album eventually came to be considered among Weezer's best work and in 2002, Rolling Stone readers voted Pinkerton the 16th greatest album of all time! so quite the turn around, it was an album well ahead of its time and it has been listed in several critics' "best albums of all time" lists since then, lead single El Scorcho comes in her at #15 just beating another fantastic single from Britpoppers Sleeper at #19 and a pop classic from Celine Dion at #25. We also see the debut single Roses are Red from Aquarium, this Aqua song was a #1 hit in Denmark and went top 5 in Sweden and Norway

From pre-Girls Aloud days Kenickie and Shampoo are two my favourite British girl bands.
"In Your Car" was # 1 in my chart, but their best track is "P.V.C".

Yeah "In Your Car" was a pretty big chart hit, top 30 I think so that will feature when its released next year, have to say this is a band that passed me by first time around even though Lauren Laverne only lives a few mile away in Sunderland

6th October 1996 - 12th October 1996
Lovefool spends a second week at the top with The Bluetones and Ocean Colour Scene putting The Cardigans under pressure. Two top quality new entries this week with Babybird coming in at #10 with You're Gorgeous and Rotterdam (Or Anywhere) by The Beautiful South in at #15. Kevin Carter isn't my favourite Manic's song but good enough to chart at #29, loving the Runrig song too, not a band i was familiar with before this but they have had a few songs chart now
