HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 23rd FEBRUARY 1986It’s one of the closest weeks we’ve ever had on the Retro-Chart, with just three points separating the Top Three. After a late surge, The Bangles emerge victorious as their first Top Ten single becomes their first chart-topper, with Manic Monday leaping six places to take over at number one. Diana Ross is left stranded at number two as Chain Reaction spends a second week at number two. The Damned were unlucky not to end the week at number one, with all three records passing control of the top spot between them as the week progressed. All of this activity at the top sees last week’s number one fall back all the way to number four as Billy Ocean heads south with When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going. Talking Heads are back in the Top Five as And She Was moves up six places to land at number five. This week’s highest new entry is from Kate Bush, back with her third Top Ten hit, Hounds Of Love, in at number nine, her highest debut on the Retro-Chart to date. Hipsway are this week’s biggest climber on the chart as The Honeythief leaps a massive 20 places to land alongside Kate Bush at number 9. And here’s this week’s Retro Chart in full…

The Liverpool indie satirist group's take on Thatcher's Britain. Which imagines a violent civil insurrection in Trumpton, a fictional town inhabited by stop-motion characters which featured in BBC TV children's programmes of 1966–69; the song also mentions several of the best-known characters in those programmes. The instrumental and hummed introduction is to the tune of "To Be a Pilgrim" ("He Who Would Valiant Be") by John Bunyan (1628–88) as arranged by the English classical composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958), a popular hymn sung at the 2013 funeral of Margaret Thatcher (1925–2013)!

Lowish total for #1.
Diana Ross did well considering the considerable resistance to Chain Reaction - not even listed in a quarter of the charts.

Lowish total for #1. Diana Ross did well considering the considerable resistance to Chain Reaction - not even listed in a quarter of the charts. I can't stand it I'm afraid would probably make my top 10 worst hits of 1986. Although most of them are much much worse

Frank Sinatra looking to reach #1 - which would let him join Tina Turner as an artist who would have #1s about 19 years apart, having been Christmas #1 in 1966 with "That's Life". When I cover 1956-59 we'll see if he gets more #1s but I'm not going all the way back to the 1940s when he was already having hits.
Eloise so close to being #1 in the combi-chart then. We'll wait until later in the year and see if the original version of that song can hit #1 in our 1968 combi-chart.
The Bangles are in the chart with one of his songs, now Prince also gets an entry. The artist who had the UK Christmas #1 in 1966 and is also possibly heading for our combi-chart #1 in 1968 will have a go at that one too later.
And after being ripped off by the song at #4 this week, Electric Light Orchestra get a new entry of their own.
The Pogues bring their celtic music into the chart and Australian rockers Inxs get an entry too. Expect more from those two.

Easily my top record for 1986 and 3rd favourite of all time after Abba Knowing Me Knowing You and Supremes' You Can't Hurry Love (the original of course not the Kingpin version)!

Are the Pogues EP songs going to be listed separately or together? I like all of the songs so have just charted them together, rather than clogging up my chart with 4 entries.

At the time I only knew London Girl so I charted on the strength of that song alone.

I don't know much about the Pogues or this EP I'm afraid. I suppose I'd treat it in a similar way to a double A-side, ie until multiple songs start appearing on individual Top 20's then chart the EP as a single record. When multiple songs do start featuring on individual charts I'd assign points as follows: - Where a specific song/songs is charted, points get assigned in full to that particular song(s) - Where Poguetry in Motion is charted, I'd spread points across all songs on the EP. Currently, only one song from the EP has made it on to an individual chart. That may change next week as a different song is featured lower down on another chart.
