81 Respect Yourself – Bruce Willis
From a cult hit to the biggest TV/movie star around. For me Bruce Willis could do no wrong and that even included this single which I actually bought. Yes I know what was wrong with me. It helped that I didn't know the song so I preferred it to the song that woudl follow and be a much bigger hit. Also it wasn't a million miles away from Huey Lewis. Yes Bruce's singing is by far the worst thing about this song but somehow its still great I think. It reached #5 in the Us and #7 in the UK.

80 Rock the Night – Europe
Follow up single to 'The Final Countdown' basically more of the same but not as good. But it is somehow fresher as its no so overplayed. It was a hit in Europe in 1984 but now its a hit in the UK and US reaching #12 and #30 respectively.

79 Big Love - Fleetwood Mac
Now we have the big comeback single from Fleetwood Mac, the first single taken from 'Tango In The Night'. After hearing the rest of the album it was a brave and odd choice but I guess coming back with 'Everywhere' wouldn't have made such an impact as the sexual tones on this, helped built the hype and controversy. It reached #5 in the US and #9 in the UK

78 Never Take Me Alive – Spear Of Destiny
Spear Of Destiny were ones of those bands i was aware of, their name cropped up in Smash Hits and I heard a couple of their songs in passing but that all changed with this song. It is by far their best song just a total goth rock classic. I have heard more of their catalogue since and yes they are a decent band but this was truly their masterpiece. Their biggest hit by some margin in the UK, it got to #14.

77 Strangelove – Depeche Mode
Depeche mode have two of my absolute favourite songs of theirs in 1987, this is the 1st. 'Music For The Masses' was the first true modern Depeche Mode album which would set their template for the next thirty years, crazy saying that. This track reached #14 in the UK and #76 in the US.

76 Battleship Chains – The Georgia Satellites
No Limits powerplays weren't all hair metal and AOR. This was the second single I knew by this band, 'Keep Your hands To Yourself' was Ok but this was brilliant, great blues rock. the previous single actually reached #2 in the US this only got to #86 but was a bigger hit in the UK peaking at #44.

75 When Smokey Sings – ABC
One of the comebacks of 1987. ABC had really fallen out of favour and out of the charts over the last 3 years but that all changed with this brilliant tribute to Smokey Robinson. It even sparked a comeback in the Us where it made the top 10 getting to #5, peaked at #11 in the UK.

74 Point of No Return - Exposé
A band I recently used in Haven Pop Idol. Miami sound was one of my favourite pop genres and along with Miami Sound machine themselves, Expose were the best. This was their biggest hit in my chart where they had 5 top 10 singles. It reached #5 in the US and #83 in the UK.

73 Thin Red Line – Glass Tiger
Glass Tiger continue to have huge success in my chart in 1987. This was a UK single, in the Us they went for Ecstasy, this was a much better choice. This is where the Big Country meets Duran Duran comparisons really came to the fore, with this Celtic synth rocker. The album this was the title track from album of the year in Canada's equivalent of the Brit awards, they also got best single and best newcomer. It missed the top 100 here but reached #19 in Canada.

72 When Will You (Make My Telephone Ring)? – Deacon Blue
Back in Scotland, a cult band called Deacon Blue were quietly getting bigger through word of mouth and a clutch of brilliant singles. The album 'Raintown' that quickly followed was my album of the year. Just read that this featured Londonbeat on backing vocals why, never knew that. this song will be reissued in 1988 and get to #34.

71 Love Changes (Everything) – Climie Fisher
Another hit for Climie Fisher and probably their most famous song, just perfect pop really. Another song that will prove to be a bigger hit in 1988, it will reach #2 then. It also got to #23 in the US.

70 I Found Someone – Cher
1987 was the year Cher returned to the charts. I remember thinking she can't be the same Cher that did 'I Got You Babe' and 'Gypsy , Tramps and Thieves' that some how she looked younger now than she did then. Of course there will be many jokes about that over the years. But anyway Cher is doing the kind of rock music that is in right now. Written by Michael Bolton and originally a minor hit for Laura Branigan in the US, she does much better here getting to #5 in the UK and #10 in the US.

69 Got My Mind Set On You - George Harrison
Now another 60s star, one of the biggest of course. I hadn't really followed him since he left the Beatles. I knew 'My Sweet Lord' of course but I never thought he would make a song I would like as much as this. Just a great pop song. I think the video helped. It was a US number one and reached #2 here.

68 Say You Will - Foreigner
Now a band i am seeing live in 2 weeks. This was the first single and album I bought of theirs. Lou Gramm the singer on this track has a big solo hit still to come on this list. This reached #6 in the US and #71 in the UK.

67 Girlfriend In A Coma - The Smiths
Now something completely different. Possibly the most beautiful song The Smiths ever did and its so sad, Morrissey has never been so sensitive. I read that Radio 1 refused to play it, not sure that was true, yes its not exactly daytime faire but I am sure I heard it on Radio 1. It reached #13 in the UK.

66 Why Can't I Be You? – The Cure
Now we come to the lead track from the first Cure album I bought, which I got in a bargain bin in Woolies. Crazy how you remember stuff like that. 'Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me' wasn't the easiest album but it did have some incredible singles in it. This reached #21 in the UK and #54 in the US.

65 No Memory – Scarlet Fantastic
Such a good alternative three in a row. This was simply one of the most powerful and infectious songs of 1987. You just could not ignore it, with its goth pop production and her brilliant vocals. Really how could you follow this? I feel that Transvision Vamp may have came along and taken this sound over and made a career out of it. Another No Limits powerplay it got to #24.

64 Sweetest Smile – Black
From goth power pop to this melancholic ballad. I think I may have his songs the wrong way round. This was the one i bought, I didn't actually buy 'Wonderful Life'. I think the fact that it isn't played as much has kept it much fresher and classy. This actually peaked at the same position as its more famous album mate at #8.

63 Wishing I Was Lucky – Wet Wet Wet
Debut single from The Wets which seemed to take forever to reach the top 40 but when it did they went massive. I kind of resented their success a little as I felt there was Scottish bands that deserved the success more, yes you Deacon Blue!!, but you just can't knock this soul pop single. It reached #6 in the UK.

62 Crush On You – The Jets
As you know I liked Five Star so it stood to reason I was going to love this family band from the US which treaded similar if even more sugary ground. But really the production on this was awesome it was super catchy and yes one of the first 7" singles I bought in 1987. Another No Limits powerplay it took a while to break in the UK after its US success; It reached #3 in the US in 1986. It woudl eventually get to #5 here.
