Growing up in the 70's the station for listening to the top 30 chart music was Radio Luxembourg. Although the reception faded in and out, especially in the summer months.
It was during the 70's that my interest in the charts started, so much so that I started to keep a record of the charts every week from mid 1972 to 1980.
Their chart was always slightly ahead of the BBC one, and it omitted certain songs (usually the ones your parents liked), but in general not a million miles away.
Their chart used to be aired on Tuesday evenings and Tony Prince was the DJ around that time, great memories.
Here are the first 2 charts I kept a record of, if anyone wants a specific chart from that period, just ask and I will post it up. When I have free time I may post up more.
The figure in brackets is the BBC chart position for that week.

Never realised that Radio Luxembourg's charts continued to the 90s.
Does anyone know what criteria was used to compile them?
Were they just made up lists?

Yes I also used to write them down 1972/1974 - they seem to very popular on searches: I posted a few 1972 charts on my wordpress popchartfreak webpage and they often get hits from all over Europe. Someone did have a whole website devoted to them 1974 onwards but it got taken down so I'm guessing there isnt one at the moment. I hope you post them all as it would be a nice historic memento before we all depart this mortal coil - unless the current owners of what was Radio Luxembourg still has them - but if they do they show no interest in publishing anywhere..?

fab charts here, I recall loving all these tracks that fell short of the UK top 30, that was the entire appeal of the Luxy charts, you got an idea what was almost a "hit". Googling Radio Luxembourg charts still brings up only my previous posts: popchartfreak.wordpress.com/category/radio-luxembourg-charts/They are a bit earlier than these, but these already are a more complete listing than anything on the net I can find now....! Fab!

Am I correct in thinking that the charts were broadcast on a Sunday evening at one point (circa 1987) as being "Next week's chart"??
(Nice to see how well Shakin' Stevens did there with an additional 4 number 1s....)

Not every UK chart hit was listed in Radio Luxembourg's charts, for instance around this time Judge Dread had an number 11 hit in August 1972, but it won't appear on their charts. Some re-issues of hits from previous year's are also absent.

all of these tracks totally familiar to me, as I recorded them all on reel-to-reel tape off Fluff Freeman's show and others - except for Bobby Hebb! I don't recall hearing it at all, ever, which is quite something even for a Northern Soul hit - they didnt always cross over to radio airplay, but don't even recall it on Luxy....
