MY TOP 1000 SONGS FROM THE 1970'S

They said it couldn't be done, loads of people said it shouldn't be done, but I've decided it will be done.

Here is my coundown of my favourite 1000 chart hits of the 1970's. I know what you're thinking, surely there

wasn't 1000 good songs from the 70's, but hopefully this list will either clarify if there was or not.



I haven't put any restrictions on the number of songs by any artist, as otherwise I might not have 1000 songs,

or the quality would nosedive dramatically.



Songs that were in the first chart of 1970 are counted, unless they had peaked in late 1969.

I have included tracks in the charts at the end of 1979 even if they were bigger hits in early 1980.

I have only included songs that made the UK chart, or the US charts, so songs that missed either chart are not included.

I have allowed some songs in the countdown that may have originally been released in the 60's, if I knew them better from the re-release.



The 70's was the decade I spent all my teenage years in, so every song brings back a memory good and not so good.

At the start of the decade I had just started High School, by the end of the decade I was married and had moved away from my home town.



Inbetween I had completed my exams,started college then started work for the dizzy salary of £2000 per year.



Where there is a particular memory or story attached to a song I will explain.



My music tastes in the 70's will cover just about every category of music that made the charts, from glam to punk, reggae

to pure pop, rock to disco, soul to prog rock. There might be some songs that have never been seen on Haven before, but there

is a first time for everything.


I used to listen to music stations every evening from Radio Luxembourg, to Radio North Sea, and any other pirate station out there.


I have tried to stay true to how I liked them back then, but looking back some songs now appeal to me more and some less so.



If I really hated it back then it probably won't be in the countdown as I probably still hate it, so no Little Jimmy Osmond.

and it was a strange sounding song back then, nothing has changed. Reached #6 in the charts.

Roy Wood was known as a key member of the Move, ELO(briefly) and Wizzard, but he also released

Lieutenant Pigeon - Mouldy Old Dough


This was the second single I ever bought (the first will appear much higher in the countdown),

I'm not sure why it made me part with my pocket money, but my excuse was I was young.

Yep it actually reached #1 in the UK charts in 1972. This song stopped 10CC song "Donna" getting

to the top spot, I felt guilty at that so I bought Donna a few weeks later to make amends.

John Barry Orchestra - Theme From The Persuaders


This was the theme music for top rated TV show in 1971, the Persuaders starring Roger Moore and

Tony Curtis, a fast action series with lots of car chases. A second series didn't materialise as Moore

became the new James Bond in 1972.

I loved this track, one of the best theme songs ever.

Members - Offshore Banking Business


They were a UK punk band in 1979 and had 2 chart hits the second will appear later.

This track got to #31, was a reggae sound.

Someone has had a lot of spare time on their hands.

First became interested in music in depth in the mid/late 70s so this should be interesting.

I do know most of these though except The Members which isn't a bad record at all - in fact they're all pretty good, much better than most of the tuneless drivel which prevails now!!!

So far I like many of the songs featured, but would have placed 'Killing me softly' and 'Now that we found love' much higher on mine.

That Offshore Banking Business was a hit in 1979 is interesting to me as it gave me the "history" that off-shoring was happening as long ago as that and wasn't something they started in the early 2000s when I started working for investment banks and found they were off-shoring a lot of their development work.

In 2009 the Members re-recorded that song with new lyrics about the collapse of the banks, and called it "International Banking Crisis" (I think). The new version reached my top 10.

Bravo smokeyb. The 1970s is a much maligned decade by snobbish music critics. There was much more to the era than punk and an acknowledgement that a few glam rock stars were credible. You've already provided ample evidence of that in your first 10 selections.

I've just checked my database. I have 3,881 tracks from the 1970s in my collection, of which 1,476 made the singles charts.

But I don't think I'd have been able to restrict my list to singles only. Taking 1970 in isolation, and noting that this was the worst year of the decade for new music, we still had at least a dozen great LPs that would have contributed album tracks to my list:-
