Can't say Im familiar with Mattek-Sands although she seems to have been about for a good while and has had some success usually in doubles.
Actually not finding this USO over exciting perhaps because of the early defeats fro the Brits.
Thinking Del Potro may be a "surprise" winner of the men's.

Actually not finding this USO over exciting perhaps because of the early defeats fro the Brits. Thinking Del Potro may be a "surprise" winner of the men's. That surprises me about Mattek-Sands. She came to my attention a number of years ago when she started doing work for 5 Live at Wimbledon. She was the player who had that terrible injury at Wimbledon last year when she let out a chilling scream that it seems could be heard all around the grounds. I'm glad she's still competing at Grand Slams as it didn't look good that day.
Glad you said that about the USO, im feeling the same. I could say its because its being shown on Amazon Prime but im not sure how much I would have seen if Sky or Eurosport still had it. Think I read that its the worst performance for the Brits since the 2013 French Open.
I think Del Potro may be the most pleasing winner for me (and I say that as a Federer fan).

Speaking of Federer - shock defeat to Millman last night. Having seen Millman (AKA the Milkman) play Liam Broady in a hard court challenger in 2014 IIRC (think he also played Murray at Wimbledon maybe 2015 or 2016) he's a very solid player but doesn't really have any weapons, so is Federer starting to fade as a Grand Slam contender? I say this assuming Millman doesn't go on to reach the final!
Yesterday's results Mens Doubles R3
(4) Jamie Murray/Soares beat (14) Haase/Middelkoop 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 (16) Inglot/Skugor lost to (3) Mike Bryan/Jack Sock 6-2 6-4
Mixed Doubles QF Jamie Murray/Mattek-Sands beat Kichenok/Koolhof 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (6-8) 10-7 (Match tie break)
Also a couple of wins in the juniors. Aidan McHugh beat a qualifier Cretu 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 and Emma Raducanu beat Bilokin 6-3 6-1. Very impressive from Raducanu as her opponent is higher ranked. McHugh is Scottish and so its not surprising that Andy Murray is a fan. He's actually practised with him before, at Wimbledon I think.
The squad for GB's Davis Cup tie against Uzbekistan in Glasgow from 14th-16th September was announced yesterday with no Andy Murray or Kyle Edmund. Given that this may be one of the last occasions Murray has to play Davis Cup in Glasgow with the new Davis Cup format from next year limiting home ties for the top group I thought that might be incentive for him to play, but Leon Smith said that it was more important for him to continue his rehab. Don't know whether it was solely Andy's decision (my guess is he discussed it with Leon Smith) but either way Leon Smith seemed to agree with the decision not to play. Edmund basically isn't fit enough and has missed training because of his illness. Cam Norrie, Jay Clarke and Dan Evans have been called up as the singles players. Uzbekistan have Istomin in the Top 100 but no one else in the Top 400, so it is a tie we should win.

The heat and humidity seem to have played a huge part in happenings this year.
As long as anyone but Miss Sharapova wins the Women's I'm happy so I'm smiling now..
I also like to see someone other than Nadal or Federer win.
I know Tom's a Fed fan - I used to be but I lost a lot of respect for him when a few years back Nadal took over from him as the world #1 and let's just say he was less than gracious about it in his manner. You have to be a good loser.
No point in making rules and ignoring them - Nadal has for years been busing the time code and is mostly allowed to unhindered - you obviously allow a certain amount of leeway but in the end it amounts to cheating.

Djokovic's incessant ball bouncing against Edmund at Wimbledon however just p*ssed me off. It seems to be worse now than before, though I did notice that the amount seemed to go down when he was wearing a cap...so maybe he was stressed in the heat or something.
Yesterday's results
Mens Doubles QF (4) Murray/Soares lost to Albot/Jaziri 7-5 6-4
Mixed Doubles SF Murray/Mattek-Sands beat McHale/Harrison (US pair) 6-4 2-6 10-8 A struggle but at least they won.
Girls R2 Emma Raducanu beat American 2nd seed Noel 6-0 6-1
Boys R2 Aidan McHugh beat De Jong 6-4 6-1 Really impressive win.
Anton Matusevich is also through to the quarter-finals of the boys doubles.

The Murray/Soares partnership is a bit of a puzzle to me - they are so inconsistent.
They are capable of beating everyone but too often lose when they shoudn't - maybe Jamie needs to consider changing his partner.
That quarter final was a match they should never have lost and in straight sets too.
Definitely in with a chance of winning The Mixed - roller coster of a semi.
Nadal/Del Potro shoud be a brutal corker.
Nishikori always seems to be there or thereabouts but to me he is a lightweight compared to the other top players.

Yesterday's results
Many matches suspended or cancelled, I think due to the extreme heat (including Aidan McHugh's a set and 3-0 down at deuce when play was suspended for lightning), but one result in.
Girls R3 Emma Raducanu beat (14) Qinwen Zheng 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 She was 5-3 down in the first set and a mini-break down in the TB as well. Excellent win.

Andy has talked about playing with him outside the Davis Cup, but I suspect that's some way off and probably wouldn't be week in week out. Agree about the inconsistency, it's not like they were out of form either, won the Cincinatti title, their first Masters title, earlier in the summer.
Hoping he can win the mixed, don't think the opponents are seeded. That's being played tomorrow.
Nishikori's biggest problem is being so injury-prone.

Fri results
Boys R3 Aidan McHugh lost to (6) Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-4 6-1 This was the match carried over from Thursday. Seyboth Wild is seeded as he's got an ATP ranking inside the Top 500, his junior ranking is actually lower than McHugh's. Still quite disappointing that he didn't make it closer though.
Girls QF Emma Raducanu lost to (11) Clara Burel 6-2 6-0
Boys Doubles QF Anton Matusevich/Andreev beat (8) Tianu/Wassermann 6-0 6-4 Great win and they've got a chance of winning the title now as it doesn't seem that there are any seeds left.
Also wins in the wheelchair doubles for 2nd seeds Alfie Hewitt and Gordon Reid (carried over from Thursday), 2nd seed Alfie Hewitt in the singles, and Andrew Lapthorne in the wheelchair quad singles in one of his round robin matches.

I wondered what people's thoughts were on the Women's US Open final, I see Williams has had a hissy fit at the referee and called him sexist and said more women need to complain during a game, as men get away with it, but women get docked points and games? Sad thing is, it all overshadowed Osaka's 1st grand slam win which seems a real shame to me. You'd hope a real champion would see that and shut up now.

In my humble opinion, and the majority of current & past Top Tennis players who have made a comment about it. They disagree with you, because this Umpire Carlos Ramos has an increasing history of inconsistent grandstanding making himself the centre of attention by being a grade A A-hole.
At this year’s Wimbledon quarter-final between Novak Djokovic and Kei Nishikori both players threw their rackets to the ground in frustration. However, only Djokovic was issued a warning and directed a comment at the umpire during the game: “Double standards, my friend, double standards,” he told Ramos. After the match, Djokovic brought the subject up again with reporters. “I thought I didn’t harm the grass. I know how I threw the racket. [Nishikori] even threw the racket in the fourth set. [Ramos] said he didn’t see it.”
At the 2016 Olympics, he issued Andy Murray with a code violation when he thought the reigning champion had called him “stupid”. “I didn’t say ‘stupid umpire’, I said ‘stupid umpiring’. But if you want to be the star of the show, that’s fine,” said Murray as the two spoke during a break between games.
Williams’s sister, Venus, has a history with Ramos too. At the 2016 French Open he accused the elder Williams of receiving coaching during a match, the same offence he penalised Serena for on Saturday. Like her sister, Venus denied she had cheated. “I’m 36 years old,” she said. “I play fair.”
Still it is yet another notch for his colourful CV and doubtless autobiography for when he retires. Put it this way how many tennis umpires can you name who have appeared in their own countries celebrity equivalent of The Apprentice (2016 Temos Negócio) & Strictly Come Dancing (2017 Dança com as Estrelas)?
As American 12-time Grand Slam singles champion Billie Jean King, one of the founders of the Women's Tennis Association, backed Williams, saying: "When a woman is emotional, she's 'hysterical' and she's penalised for it. When a man does the same, he's 'outspoken' and there are no repercussions.
There have been similar comments made today in support of Serena Williams and against the ego driven umpire by major winners Chris Evert; Martina Navratilova; Steffi Graf; Kim Clijsters; Marion Bartoli; & Sue Barker. As well as several male equivalents.

But even if they are not consistent, surely you should still respect them? Let the tennis authority penalise him if they see fit? I just think to bring up the sexism card when a Japanese player has won their first grand slam is not the way to go.

Not really sure how I feel about the Serena issue, didn't see the match and haven't heard/read that much about it, but from what was said by Russell Fuller and others on 5 Live this morning it seems that whatever Ramos' faults he did stick to the rulebook, and it was suggested for one misdemeanour (forget which one) he would have bottled it if he hadn't done anything. Tbh, im not sure Ramos is sexist, he irritates both male and female players as raliverpool's examples suggest.
Anyway, given that Serena has got history of losing her temper with a lines judge at the US Open, which she was fined for, i'm afraid I don't really take much notice of any grief she has with the officials at the US Open.
Yesterday's results
Boys Doubles Final Anton Matusevich/Andreev beat US pair Nava/Nefve 6-4 2-6 10-8 (match tiebreak) This was played indoors. I imagine it would have been fun to watch, read an interview with Matusevich around Wimbledon time and he said he's a confident player who likes to play with flair. One of his shots won Shot of the Day on Today at Wimbledon in one of his junior matches.
Wheelchair singles final (2) Alfie Hewitt beat (1) S. Kunieda (JPN) 6-3 7-5 His first US Open singles title.
Aidan McHugh's conqueror Thiago Seyboth Wild won the boys title, while Clara Burel who beat Emma Raducanu lost in the girls final.

Great for JamieM and Mattek Sands who squeezed through in a very tight match.
Mattek-Sands began quite poorly but in the end was the inspiration.
I thought Del Potro was in with a great shout at this tournament but in the end he was well beaten although the second set tie-break was pivitol.
Now that Djokovich appears to have put his injuries and personal woes behind him he is beginning to look unstoppable and with hos best surface at the Australian Open he's almost looking a shoe in.
Another period of Djokovich/ Murray rivalry would be great says she wistfully.
Can't believe the amount of support there seems to be for Serena - perhaps the trouble is that they've been lax in the past ta enforcing the rules.
Can't say I particularly like Ramos, when I've seen him at Wimbledon he always looks smug and self-satisfied.
I feel desperately sorry for Osaka in what was a great triumph - her victory was completely overshadowed and don't forget when the match boiled over she had been outplaying Serena to that point.
I'm sure Serena doesn't need off-court coaching but there's no doubt her coach was giving hand signals and after the first exchange Ramos had the chance to cool things down but he took the high road.
Serena, however has enough experience to know when to cool it - she went over the line and unfortunately got what she deserved. Maybe the pressure of winning her 24th GS singles title is putiing added pressure on her.
I'm all for the rules being enforced vigourously and EVEN-HANDEDLY.

Does this not all go back to the 2004 match againt Jennifer Capriati which Serena lost 6-4 fs but in which there were four obviously wrong calls in this set all against her and ultimately was largely responsible for the introduction of video replay. In the most famous a ball from Williams was clearly over 6" in and confirmed by the line official but the umpire overruled this and gave the point to Capriati who won the game.
The umpire Marai Alves was later relieved of ny further duties at the event and an apology was made.
If I'd have been Williams I'd have blown a gasket.

Interesting, didn't know about any of that. I think at that time other than the Brits I wasn't following the slams that closely, (and even then that was the year that Andy Murray won the US open junior title and I have no recollection of that at all!)

Davis Cup World Group playoff
GB 1-1 Ukbekistan after day 1 - Didn't watch anything but followed the 2nd match from midway through the 3rd set. Our 1st meeting with Uzbekistan. The tie is being played on indoor hard in Glasgow.
28 year old Dan Evans 222 beat 32 year old Denis Istomin 60 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 0-6 6-4 7-5 in 4 hr 11 Evans showing again what a big match player he is in the Davis Cup.
23 year old Cameron Norrie 70 lost to 20 year old Jurabek Karimov 434 0-6 5-7 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 6-2 An unbelievable result, especially when you consider he was 4-2 up in the 3rd set, and had a match point in the tie-break as well. I can't think of a worse result for a GB player in the Davis Cup and it puts massive pressure on Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot to win the doubles rubber this afternoon. At 4-2 I was thinking the tie was basically over, now i'm starting to doubt that we'll win the tie at all. If we win the doubles today then it wouldn't surprise me if we bring Jay Clarke in for the first singles on Sunday as our no 2 ranked player and if he doesn't win then Evans plays the deciding 5th rubber.
