Would expect Murray/Inglot to win the Doubles.
Terrible result for Cameron Norrie especially fron such a winning position.
Don't judge on one match but is this another typical Brit player ......................

Don't judge on one match but is this another typical Brit player ...................... The frustrating thing about Norrie is that he's undone all his good work against Spain earlier in the year on a surface that was alien to him.
I expected them to win the doubles too, but thought if Norrie could lose then so could they. They did win but got off to a shaky start - winning 4-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-2 6-3 in just under 3 hr.
Norrie has kept his place today so Leon Smith has shown massive faith in him that he can possibly clinch the tie for GB. Even if he doesn't I'd expect Evans to win his match though.

Got very nervous in the second set - they just about squeezed through the tie-break.

Norrie vindicated the decision by Leon Smith to pick him. Though he was helped by the fact that Istomin was missing with an ankle injury. So he ended up playing Fayziev who had played in the doubles rubber with Istomin, winning 6-2 6-2 6-0 in under 2 hr.

Best win yet for AndyM on his return from injury as he beat David Goffin world #11 and #1 seed to reach the quarters of the Shezhen Open.
Will be a chance to measure his form when he again meets Fernando Verdasco tomorrow after their close encounter at the USO.
Daring to hope.....................

Late posting this but here are the rankings immediately after the US Open last month, those Brits inside the Top 100 and selected others.
ATP 16 Edmund - surprisingly no change despite his shock first round exit. 70 down 3 Norrie - fell after losing his qualifying points from last year. 230 up 8 Broady
WTA 45 up 1 Konta - Surprisingly climbed despite first round exit 107 up 9 Watson after qualifying 161 down 6 Broady - surprising fall despite her shock win over Boulter in the first round of qualifying. 169 up 9 Swan after reaching final qualifying round.
Then that week, the week of the Davis Cup tie, Watson reached the semi finals in Quebec which saw her climb back into the top 100 to 92.
Last week in Beijing Kyle found his form again reaching the semis. Katie Boulter also qualified for the main draw, losing to Flipkens in R1 4-6 6-2 7-5. That's enabled her to go up 8 places but she's still just short of the top 100 at 101. Kyle is up 2 to 14.

In a way hard to understand how Kyle Edmund has risen to #14 after his bad run of form.
Admittedly he did reach the semis in Beijing but he didn't beat anyone of note in doing so and disappointing to lose to Basiashviki onky ranked #34 in the world (at that stage) although it was pretty close.
Interesting match for him tomorrow in the last 32 at Shanghai. Seppi is a seasoned campaigner and Kyle needs to win this to justify his seeding.
I'm worried what might happen at Australian Open - there's a big danger his ranking could plummet.

I'm worried what might happen at Australian Open - there's a big danger his ranking could plummet. I've been worried about Kyle's ranking after the AO for a while as I suspect it may take a while to climb back up. That said I didn't think he'd be a top 16 player at this stage of his career, or maybe ever, but given what he's achieved so early in his career I've always wondered what he could achieve when he hopefully hits his peak in his late 20s/early 30s. Yes, I expected him to win his semi-final but I think Bas won the title beating Del Potro in the final which put it into perspective. Notice Kyle won his first round match in Shanghai yesterday beating Krajinovic 7-5 6-3. In other news Konta has ditched her coach (Michael Joyce) for the third year running...

I haven't seen much of her on the tour this year, but I must admit I'm sure there was one occasion when during a coach chat I didn't think there was much chemistry there. Can't remember at all when it was. There is a danger though of her getting a reputation. Sacking Fissette last year doesn't look good now, though we've been over that before.

After reaching the quarter-final at Tianjin last week where she went down fighting to Karolina Pliskova the world #6 5-7 6-0 6-3 Katie Boulter makes her first appearance in the top 100 at #96.

Quite surprised that Kyle Edmund has won his first ATP tournament since I didn't know he was playing!
In fact turned out he was the highest branked player in the field at the European Open and the first I heard was on Five Live on Sunday afternoon when they announced that he was leading 6-5 on serve in the 2nd set against Gael Monfils having lost the first but he had been a break up.
I expected him he lose at that stage but he hung tough and won in 2 tie breaks quite handily 7-2 7-4.
Although it doesn't improve his ranking there were a lot of players all bunched together so it gives him a bit of a cushion against the points he could lose at the AO.

Yeah I was shocked as well when I saw the news the following day! He's actually gone back up to 14 having fallen the week before. After his Beijing run I did wonder whether he might get close to the top 10 if he kept up it up for the rest of the year, but didn't say anything as I thought it was probably unrealistic. After he won his first match in Vienna last week it was said that he still had an outside chance of the tour finals but i'm guessing that, and the top 10, has probably gone now after he lost in the 2nd round.

Will finish off 2018 and mention some things from this year so far, but they can wait for now.
The news I feared last week has come. Murray will be retiring this year, said he wants to compete at Wimbledon one last time but his press conference suggested that the Australian Open may well be his last tournament
Russell Fuller said on 5 Live this morning that he has talked about having another hip operation which would definitely end his career sooner. Must admit, if his hip is affecting his day-to day life that much is it really worth continuing until Wimbledon?

It's sad, but not unexpected, news as Andy had already said a few months back that he wasn't sure if he could compete at the highest level any longer. He's had a good career though and should have the hip operation if it will ensure he can live a relatively pain free life. His health is more important than playing on for just a few months in constant pain.
Speaking of tennis players whose careers look to be blighted by injury, what is happening with Laura Robson? She's had a run of bad luck since a wrist injury way back in 2014. She underwent a hip operation last July and as far as I am aware hasn't played tennis since. Her body shape has changed so much over the past few years and she no longer looks like she has an athlete's body. In fact she looks a bit thin, possibly down to not playing tennis and working out on a regular basis.
