41 She Comes in the Fall – Inspiral Carpets
Heaviest moment yet for Inspiral Carpets this was such an anthem and one of the highlights of their debut album 'Life'. Think it would be in my top 5 Inspiral songs. This reached #27 in the Uk.

Into the top 40 with an indie hit and the first appearance for one of my favourite shoegazing bands, they blend rock and shoegaze to make a sound that I still love today and you will still hear in my chart, they are
40 Rave Down - Swervedriver
I discovered them through the Chart Show and I just thought they were immense, this was a Indie top 10 hit. You will be hearing more from them in 1991.

Ok now we are in the top 40 I need to feel more enthused about this year, I am realising after listening to Rave day on 6 Music that remixes were my favourite thing in 1990 and I am concentrating too much on the single mixes, so maybe I should talk about the versions I love.
39 Elephant Stone - The Stone Roses
After them dominating 1989 this is the biggest song for them in 1990. It is a rather fine re-issue of an early track that pasted just about everyone by, it is every bit as good as the songs that would make The Stone Roses, maybe they thought they had too many songs about stones, it reached #8 on re-issue in the UK.

38 Rainbow Child – Dan Reed Network
Now we have the best song Dan Reed Network ever did and the one that was expected to turn them into stars, it is maybe to ahead of its time sounding like a mid 90s Red Hot Chili Peppers song or No Doubt. Yes right band wrong time for poor Dan Reed. Anyway gorgeous song, it reached #39 on re-issue.

37 All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You – Heart
Once one of the biggest bands in my chart, Heart return with the first single from 'Brigade'. It really is a marmite song and quite different from past hits but when that chorus kicks in, it is the Heart we love. My tastes were just changing a bit as well. Its also one of Ann Wilson's best vocals that you cant deny. It reached #2 in the US and #8 in the UK.

36 Wicked Game - Chris Isaak
Another controversial choice maybe but I just love this so much, I was such a bit David Lynch fan at the time, think I saw 'Wild At Heart' three times in the cinema. Its a difficult song though as its my wifes song in that it was a song with her ex and I don't really like to think why hehe But anyway I got over that she was mine now hehe It reached #10 in the UK and #6 in the US.

35 Black Velvet - Alannah Myles
More sophisticated pop and one of the best pop rock songs of 1990 so different from songs that are usually hits. What I liked about the early 90s is if a song was good enough it would nearly always manage to become a hit. Anyway brilliant song , I never get tired of it. It was a US number one and reached #2 here.

34 Big – New Fast Automatic Daffodils
After all those big songs that everybody knows, here is a 'Big' song that may have passed many by. This was one of the biggest indie dance anthems at the clubs we went to.Again it doesn't sound like anyone else, ,unique but so 1990 as well. It was re-issued again in 1991 but missed the charts again, It was just one of those songs that sold steady on 12" without troubling the charts but it did make the Indie Top 10.

33 Roam - The B-52's
As I warned I would place it above 'Love Shack'. It was the song that convinced me to buy the album and its my favourite B52s song, its not a million miles from a certain REM song that we will hear in 1991. It just makes you feel happy such a great summer radio song, oops another REM reference. Why this was the 4th single I have no idea, it reached #3 in the US but just #17 here thought it did better.

32 How Was It For You? – James
I really felt that was the song that showed that James were serious now and were going to break through. The hardest song they have released so far and is the first of many big chorus songs we will get from 'Gold Mother', this was found to be true as they finally cracked the top 40 reaching #32.

31 Belfast – Energy Orchard1990 had so many great new Irish bands but not many had a debut single like 'Belfast'. It was almost the other side of 'Broken Land' showing a more upbeat view to The Troubles but again reflecting back on when times were better. It was a huge radio hit think Radio 1 played it about 5 times a day. It only managed #52 though. www.youtube.com/watch?v=80eq92g-bu0

30 Policy of Truth – Depeche Mode
Into the top 30 and as many woudl be expecting we have a Depeche Mode song or two to come. I actually preferred this to that other song at the time as it wasn't so overplayed and I just love the synths on this so much. 'Violator' will always remind me of my student days, a constant soundtrack. This reached #16 in the UK and #15 in the US.

29 This Is How It Feels – Inspiral Carpets
This is good I don't want to stop now. Next we have the breakthrough hit from Inspiral Carpets and its really quite a strange thing. Can you see this song in the charts any other time after from 1990 where being from anywhere with 100 miles of Manchester got you a hit. It is glorious but so understated as well. It reached #14 in the UK.

28 Then – The Charlatans
And yes that sound will dominate the top 30. Another understated track maybe but it was still a highlight from 'Some Friendly'. I think also it showed they were something special in the own right and not chancers. It reached #12 in the UK. More organs as well.

27 Shine On – The House of Love
Poor House Of Love once the lonely light of indie rock now find they are being overtaken and drowned out by so many new bands and signings. So what else to do but reissue your most famous song. This time it reached #20 but you feel that its all maybe a bit too late for them.

26 De-Luxe – Lush
Its not all about the boys, I heard this on Snub TV I think and I was instantly blown away, it turned up on a 4AD tape on Select I think and I played that tape to death. I think this is probably my favourite Lush song but I think they will have more top 40 appearances to come. I think this made the Indie top 10.

25 Make It Mine – The Shamen
Hurrah we finally reach The Shamen, the soundtrack to more student parties than any other band, they brought us all together. One of us was an Indie fan, another dance, another rock and me who liked a bit off everything and we all loved The Shamen. They will be the number one band that reminds me of my student years. Anyway 'Make It Mine' just so good to dance to and and a great rock riff. Their biggest song yet reaching #42. They are no longer a Scottish secret.

24 Killer - Edit – Adamski, Seal
We had Seal earlier so I think it was obvious this would be coming, definitely one of the best dance hits of 1990 certainly one of the best UK number ones. It still sounds brilliant today nearly 30 years later.

23 Nothing Ever Happens – Del Amitri
Oops sorry to breakup the party, you all need to go home now!! Yes Del Amitri was a great song to play at 3am if you want to kill a party hehe but seriously I loved them but I really think this song is so overrated compared to their other songs but so happy that they have finally broke through. It reached #11 in the UK and was number one on the Airplay charts.

22 Loaded - Primal Scream
Ok party back on. I have to admit that I just didnt get this song at first, it was just so different to anything Primal Scream did before but a few months later I totally got it and 'Screamadelica' is one of my all time favourite albums now, yes I know so obvious. Also more success for Scotland so that's all good. It reached #16 in the Uk February 1990.
