21 ( 31 ) Walk On Water - Neil Diamond 22 ( -- ) The Men - Isaac Hayes 23 ( 27 ) Sweet Surrender - Bread 24 ( 15 ) You're A Lady - Peter Skellern (#2[1]) 25 ( 34 ) Sunny Days - Lighthouse 26 ( 25 ) Stay With Me - Blue Mink (#25) 27 ( -- ) Getting A Drag - Lynsey De Paul 28 ( 28 ) Something's Wrong With Me - Austin Roberts 29 ( 20 ) Lay Down - Strawbs (#11) 30 ( 33 ) Corner Of The Sky - Jackson 5
31 ( -- ) Alive - Bee Gees 32 ( 23 ) Rock Me Baby - David Cassidy (#12) 33 ( -- ) Sitting - Cat Stevens 34 ( 21 ) Summer Breeze - Seals And Crofts (#7) 35 ( -- ) Come Softly To Me - New Seekers 36 ( 26 ) Destiny - Anne Murray (#17) 37 ( 24 ) In A Broken Dream - Python Lee Jackson (#1[4) 38 ( -- ) Don't Do That - Geordie 39 ( 30 ) From The Beginning - Emerson Lake & Palmer (#22) 40 ( -- ) Long Dark Road - Hollies
-- ( 29 ) Hallelujah Freedom - Junior Campbell (#5) -- ( 32 ) Beautiful You - Neil Sedaka (#28) -- ( 35 ) Why Can't We Be Lovers - Holland-Dozier (#24) -- ( 36 ) I Am Woman - Helen Reddy (#8) -- ( 37 ) Ventura Highway - America (#32) -- ( 38 ) I'd Love You To Want Me - Lobo (#16) -- ( 39 ) There Are More Questions Than Answers - Johnny Nash (#3) -- ( 40 ) You'll Always Be A Friend - Hot Chocolate (#32)
The highest new entry is duet Loggins And Messina. The Loggins of the duo is Kenny Loggins who had hits in the 80s with Footloose and Danger Zone. The song was also covered by Poison.
Try finding the entry at #31 on Spotify. It is there, but only the 12th returned result and you can sort-of guess why. The issue has been raised on the forum and for me it's a clear bug but they don't want to fix it.
(In 1956 I have a similar issue as there is an Elvis song simply titled Love Me and a more famous one comes up first. That one is also on my 1956 playlist as it happens, the one I have just scored up).

-- ( -- ) Pieces Of April - Three Dog Night -- ( -- ) What Am I Crying For - Dennis Yost & The Classics IV
Interesting that there are so many good entries on a week in December and in particular a number of classics. John Lennon enters with a classic #1, Stevie Wonder also enters inside the top 10 with one of his best songs, which might not reach #1 (but he did have an NM #1 in 1981 with "Happy Birthday" so there is definitely one in his career) and David Bowie's "The Jean Genie" has to be content with 3rd, leaving John Lennon's former bandmate 4th and T-Rex 5th. We also lose one of last week's entries plus two singles that were climbing in the lower part of the chart as we get 10 entries in total.

Both Wings and Rod Stewart have double A-sides but the first listed side was a hit in the US and so I've charted in both cases the second-listed side but will chart the other one (Hi Hi Hi and Angel) when it hits the US top 40.
In both these cases I prefer the one I have already charted.
I will soon be compiling the top singles of 1972 but already am listening to the first 1973 playlist. This is the best start to a year we have had for a while, 1964 and 1968 both made great starts. The all-time best start to any calendar year musically in my opinion is held by 1981.

-- ( -- ) Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight - James Taylor
Not quite as mad as last week but another totally classic song entering. As I mentioned, 1972 has not seen a female lead vocalist reach #1 in this chart, but I said I expected 1973 would start with one and now you see which song I had in mind. She may even get there for 30th December but as next week is Christmas week it's pretty certain John Lennon won't let go just yet.
For Stevie Wonder it's the second time he's reached #2, having got there with "Signed Sealed Delivered (I'm Yours)" in 1970.

A combination of it being no longer Christmas (it may be on its way soon in 2019, but it's been and gone now in this 1972 topic), and the pure strength of the Carly Simon song has seen a change at #1 this week. So 1972 is no longer without a female lead vocalist at #1. She will in future have UK top 10 hits in 1977, 1982 and 1987. I like "Nobody Does It Better" but not overly keen on the other two, as have been reflected in the retro charts, but this song is in a totally different league to those.

Considering how many brilliant songs Carly Simon has done, she has had shockingly few UK hits.

Ivana's cover version of "Burning Love" spent 3 weeks on the top of my chart in 2019, "Rockin' Pneumonia" wasn't represented.

No love for Pearls' "Third Finger Left Hand" (7 weeks at # 1 in my chart) It's my favourite their single. How high they will fly in my top 100 girls groups songs countdown ?

I remember hearing the Pearls and thinking it was almost a bridge between the Spector sound of the 60s and the Abba sound that was shortly to come. They had 2 hits in my chart, albeit they weren't that big.
A bit miffed their music isn't on Spotify.

Long-Haired Lover From Liverpool reached NM #11 earlier in the year.
Carly Simon's #1 at the end of the year extended to a 6-week #1 in 1973 and was the biggest hit of all time by a female singer until 1981 when Hazel O'Connor replaced it.

My charts always were based on the dates of UK charts/releases, that's why I looking in November-December for Jimmy Osmond single. Both your favourite female songs didn't have any chances to be a part of my weekly charts.

Long Haired Lover.. is in the chart I've been posting in the retro chart recently. My Ding-A-Ling charts around September and doesn't do quite as well - I think the "spirit" of Christmas would have helped it be a bigger hit in my chart as novelty stuff tends to do better then than it does in September. Chuck Berry had the biggest hit of the year in 1958 when "Johnny B Goode" spent 7 weeks at #1.
