Maybe controversially, I'm going to say The Killers - Mr Brightside I used to love it but it's so overplayed now that it just annoys me now. Plus I think the other singles from that album, as well as 'When we were young' from the second are just as good if not better. I agree with this choice and I never "loved" it, thought it was ok but weak compared with the far superior follow-up "All These Things That I've Done" and then later on they made more great songs that were better than Mr Brightside.

For me, a lot of the songs in this thread are the actual best songs by the bands in question. The Killers have done loads of great music and it is a bit of a shame that Mr Brightside overshadows it, but it does that because it is quite possibly the best indie disco single ever released. It's brilliant.
I think The Waterboys should be considered though - The Whole Of The Moon is amazing, but I still think I prefer And A Bang On The Ear and Fisherman's Blues. They're both much more folky and less poppy though, so they're a bit hard to compare.

I disagree with some of the comments about Radiohead except that:
- Kid A and everything that came after were way overrated - Paranoid Android as a track is rather overrated. I've generally had a history of liking songs with multiple parts but this one comes across as a bit of a mess to me.
However The Bends is full of great songs, in particular "Just" and "High And Dry". And "Creep" is also a great song. From Ok Computer my favourite track is "No Surprises".

Others I'm going to add here:
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This. Just an "ok" song for me too, but I've always preferred "Love Is A Stranger", "Thorn In My Side" and "Who's That Girl" in addition to the one they did actually get to number one over here.
Prince - When Doves Cry. Yeah he makes strange songs and the weird noises and that riff are quite catchy and the lyrics are quite quirky but really he's made better songs - some that were hits for others and also some of his own.

Slade just occurred to me, I'm surprised no one's mentioned them yet. Merry Xmas Everybody is great fun, but they have loads of better songs.

The Verve - Bittersweet symphony.
For me one of the most overrated songs ever. I even prefer a lot of Richard Ashcroft's solo stuff.

I do far prefer "The Drugs Don't Work" but then that one did get to #1 and Bittersweet Symphony only #2.
I bought the Verve album Urban Hymns as it was UK #1 for ages and I quite liked the singles but never got into it.

I agree about the Verve.
Maybe it's not overrated in terms of critical reception, but more in terms of chart position, but their only no 1, "So You Win Again", was a long way short of the best material of Hot Chocolate.
(Stevie Wonder, who had a touch of genius, had a truly dreadful solo no 1, and a duet no.1 that wasn't much better, but his better work towers over both " I Just Called..." and "Ebony and Ivory" that I don't think that either of those tracks really fit the description being discussed here)

I've just been listening to a mixture of Tiffany songs from over the years, and it's a shame that the only song you ever hear played is 'I Think We're Alone Now' - which is a great cover, but there's so much more to her than that song!

"Could Have Been", " Feelings of Forever" and (perhaps especially) "All This Time" were great, although I've no idea what happened to her recording career after that brief period she had in or near the limelight
