A bit of both usually, I'm kinda fed up of Wham - Last Christmas and I know that will be sacrilege on here...

There are loads of alternative Christmas classics that I'd rather hear that we rarely do today, like for example The Water Babies “Under The Tree” (which was only a moderate hit, No27 in 2005) and Low's “Just Like Christmas”. I understand for Christmas parties etc. but it must be hell working in retail at this time of year!

Fairytale of New York
Every xmas all you hear is that it is the real hidden gem of the mainstream xmas songs, to a point where it now gets played a million time every xmas

I must admit I am sick of hearing the same few year in year out. Yes they are all good, but overplay does ruin songs after a while.
It's not like there aren't many others to choose from either - I had a playlist of about 900 festive tracks in my old itunes folder. Admittedly some were cack, but there was a lot of good stuff in there too.

Can't stand Ms. Carey's hugely popular festive offering, I didn't like it when it first came out and I hate it more with each passing year ~ I rather press the mute button than listen to it.

Haven's Xmasvision thread turns up several gems every year. And yet Now That's What I Call Xmas, iTunes and now Spotify keep recycling the same old over-exposed tracks. Its not that they are bad. Its just that there are so many other great festive songs out there which are equally good.
To think that everyone said the internet, downloads and streaming would make it easier for new music to gain exposure, and for new acts with new songs to breakthrough from nowhere.

Mariah Carey and Pogues are the two i get sick of hearing. Not particularly keen on Michael Buble either. Totally love Wham, Slade, Wizzard, Boney M, Band Aid (Version 1 though SAW version i like in my own company)

Traditional Christmas classics to me means actual carols and old-school Christmas music - think "Good King Wenceslas" rather than Wham! or Mariah Carey. That sort of music is what I always go for at this time of year over festive-themed pop/rock. That said, there are a few (both classics and gems I discovered through Xmasvision etc.) which I do like and do listen to a bit. "2000 Miles" by the Pretenders is probably my favourite. I liked Wham! until the Whammageddon thing ruined it

My daughter was compiling a spotify christmas play list, and I told her NO Buble, the originals are all far better, she ignored me of course, she's 16! But when it gets played on Christmas Day, I'll get her to skip Buble! I think modern day classic pop songs like Leona - One more sleep and Kelly Clarkson - Underneath the tree should get more airtime, over Mariah, Slade and Wizard, and obviously Coldplay and Christmas lights can be played over the Pogues. Problem is radio think we just want to hear the same 6 songs every day!

I really dislike Paul McCartneys “Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time” and I have say Band Aid is not high on my list of likes either. In any version!

Three worst Christmas records - Wham! - Last Christmas (Everything She Wants is class), Fairytale Of New York and If you can call it a Christmas fecord the original Do They Know It's Christmas.
#1 X'mas record Boney M - Mary's Bi Child/ Oh My Lord - I could listen to it any day of the year.

Paul McCartney's Christmas song is just abysmal. I can just about tolerate the rest of them.

Kelly Clarkson - Underneath the tree should get more airtime This is the truest thing said in this thread. The Paul McCartney song being dreadful is a close second. I've walked out of shops when it started playing.

I know this is off topic, but one of the oddest Christmas song experiences is being in a pet food shop in George in 40 degree heat in December and being welcomed to the dulcet tones of “so this is Christmas” by Sam Nixon from the 2003 Pop Idol Christmas song in 2016.
Where did they even find it for one as SA didn’t have Pop Idol, and 13 years later thought it would sell some more deworming pills, exotic bird seed, or a dog toy to get Christmassy?
That said the local mall still pumps out Flatline by MKS on a regular occasion when I pop for a sandwich at lunchtimes.

Mary's Gender Neutral Child. It fits, when you sing it back to yourself.
