North Macedonia produced one of the biggest World Cup qualifying shocks of all-time by beating Germany 2-1 in Duisburg. It is Germany's first World Cup qualifying defeat since losing 5-1 at home to England in 2001. The visitors took the lead through record goalscorer Goran Pandev on the stroke of half-time but Germany equalised through Ilkay Gundogan's penalty with half an hour remaining. They missed several chances to take the lead before Elif Elmas fired home with five minutes remaining to complete a famous victory. Armenia are top after a dramatic 3-2 win at home to Romania. Having gone behind early in the second half, Romania went ahead with two goals from Alexandru Cicaldau. However, Romania went down to 10 men after Reading's George Puscas was sent off for a dangerously high foot and Armenia took advantage, equalising with three minites remaining before Tigran Barseghyan converted an 89th minute penalty. The group's other game saw Iceland end a seven-match losing streak with a comfortable win over Liechtenstein.

European playoff qualifiers as it stands:
The 10 runners-up qualify for the playoffs, as well as the two highest ranked Nations League group winners (using the Nations League rankings) who don't finish in the top 2 of their World Cup group.
(* = qualifies through Nations League)
Serbia Sweden Switzerland Ukraine Czech Republic Scotland Netherlands Russia Hungary North Macedonia Wales * Austria *
Ranking of the 14 Nations League group winners: (bold = currently outside top 2 of WCQ group) 1-4 France 1-4 Belgium 1-4 Italy 1-4 Spain 5. Wales 6. Austria 7. Czech Republic 8. Hungary 9. Slovenia 10. Montenegro 11. Albania 12. Armenia 13. Gibraltar 14. Faroe Islands
Given the four teams ahead of Wales on this list, they could probably afford to lose all their remaining qualifiers and still make the playoffs. The final rankings of the top 4 will be determined after the Nations League finals, which take place in Italy in October.

That's it for World Cup qualifying until June. South America, CONCACAF and Asia will resume then and Africa's group stage will kick off. There are no more European qualifiers until September due to the rescheduled Euros. There'll be a another triple header in September, followed by more conventional schedules in October and November to complete the group stage. The European playoffs will take place next March. Oceania hasn't done anything yet but with the intercontinental playoffs not taking place until June next year, it looks like they will play their early rounds either next January or March, giving us the potentially amusing scenario of the likes of the Cook Islands and American Samoa still being in the World Cup after many established European teams have been eliminated.

Thanks for this, did wonder what had happened when I saw the Puscas red card. Out of character for him, can't think of too many yellow cards he's picked up in his Reading career, let alone red.

Africa's qualifying matches scheduled for June have been postponed and its group stage will now begin in September.
Meanwhile, North Korea are reportedly not planning to travel to South Korea for its remaining qualifying matches, meaning they will be eliminated from the World Cup.

Japan become the first team to reach the third round with a second successive double-digit victory, which saw Werder Bremen's Yuya Osako score five goals. Myanmar still have a mathematical chance of being one of the best runners-up, though they need to win their last two games to stand any chance and would need a lot of results to go their way.

The withdrawal of North Korea has sparked a slight change in the rules for determining the best runners-up. North Korea opted not to travel to South Korea for their remaining concerns, citing Covid concerns, leaving Group H with just four teams. As a result, FIFA have decided results against 5th-placed teams will no longer count towards the runners-up table. In addition, the Group H matches involving North Korea have been declared void. The main beneficiaries are South Korea, who suddenly find themselves top of the group, and Lebanon, who had dropped five points against North Korea, while previous leaders Turkmenistan lose the three points they picked up against North Korea and drop to 3rd. The updated Group H table looks like this: Pos | Team | Pld | GD | Pts | 1 | | 3 | +10 | 7 | 2 | | 3 | +4 | 7 | 3 | | 4 | +1 | 6 | 4 | | 4 | -15 | 0 | w | | | | |
The runners-up table now looks like this: (Top 4 qualify + 5th as well if Qatar finish in a qualifying position) 1. Oman 4-9 (+4) 2. Kuwait 4-7 (+5) 3. Lebanon 3-7 (+4) 4. Uzbekistan 3-6 (+6) ---------------------- 5. Bahrain 4-6 (+1) ---------------------- 6. China 3-4 (+4) 7. Tajikistan 4-4 (-3) 8. Malaysia 3-3 (-1) Uzbekistan benefit here as their defeat to current bottom side Palestine no longer counts towards this table, though things could change if Palestine manage to overtake Yemen. Malaysia and Tajikistan are the big losers as their maximum points hauls against bottom sides no longer count towards this table and they drop from qualifying positions into the bottom two.

A fascinating story developing in Group A as Montserrat's team of mostly English-based non-league players earn the island's first-ever World Cup victory and go top in the process. As it stands, four teams are still be in with a chance of winning the group, and if Grenada avoid defeat tomorrow against Antigua & Barbuda, it will set up a thrilling climax on Tuesday. AFC Fylde's Nathan Pond opened the scoring shortly before half-time, Maidenhead's Rohan Ince doubled the lead in the second half before a double from Dagenham & Redbridge's Nathan Clifton.
