The Hex is dead, long live the Octagon. CONCACAF's Covid-enforced reshuffle of its format means we have eight teams in the final round, rather than six, with each team playing 14 matches. Mexico were the big (and only) winners on the opening day, scoring a late goal to beat Jamaica 2-1. Everyone else drew, with El Salvador arguably the happiest of the other sides, picking up a point against CONCACAF champions USA.

We're not even halfway through the South American competition but Brazil's place in Qatar already looks assured as they made it seven wins out of seven thanks to Everton Ribeiro's second half strike against Chile. The five-time world champions are now 12 points clear of 5th place. The top 4 remains unchanged as Argentina enjoyed a comfortable away win against 10-man Venezuela. Ecuador scored two late goals to beat Paraguay, while Uruguay picked up a point in Peru, who climb off the bottom of the table.

When the draw was made in made in January last year, Ivory Coast's ranking had dropped to the point where they weren't in the first pot of seeds, which is how they've ended up in the same group as fellow African giants Cameroon. Their campaign is off to a disappointing start with a goalless draw away in Mozambique. Cameroon took advantage, scoring two first half goals to pick up the points against Malawi.

Ghana are looking to return to the World Cup after missing out on Russia 2018 and are off to a winning start against Ethopia. South Africa haven't qualified since hosting the tournament in 2010 but could only manage a 0-0 draw against neighbours Zimbabwe.

Serbia go top on goal difference after a comfortable win over Luxembourg. Aleksandar Mitrovic scored twice to take his tally in this qualifying campaign to seven goals in four games. Ireland missed a hatful of chances against Azerbaijan but needed a late equaliser from Shane Duffy to rescue a point, their first of the competition. Sitting nine points adrift of 2nd place, a fourth World Cup appearance seems a distant prospect for Stephen Kenny's side, who haven't won a competitive game since June 2019. That was against Gibraltar.

France drop points for the second game in a row as they were unable to find a way to beat Ukraine, who have now drawn all five of their games. Finland picked up their first win and are now four points behind the world champions with two games in hand. They meet each other on Tuesday. A win for France would ensure they still top the group when they return from next month's Nations League-enforced absence from the qualifiers.

The Faroe Islands almost held out for a famous draw at home to the Euro 2020 semi-finalists but Jonas Wind's 85th minute goal meant the Danes make it five wins out of five and maintain their five point lead at the top. The surprise result of the day was Israel beating Austria 5-2 to move two points clear of 3rd place. Austria are very likely to be in the playoffs anyway thanks to their Nations League performance (unless one of France, Spain, Belgium or Italy messes up their qualifying campaign to such an extent that they finish outside the top 2 of their group) and may already have one eye on next March. Scotland keep themselves right in playoff contention with Lyndon Dykes scoring the only goal as they edged out Moldova.

No surprises in Group G with Turkey, Netherlands and Norway all winning, though it took Turkey 54 minutes to find a breakthrough against Gibraltar. They remain a point clear of the Dutch and they will face each other in Amsterdam on Tuesday. Norway move up to 3rd, still level on points with the Netherlands.

Belgium celebrated Romelu Lukaku's 100th cap with a convincing win in which the Chelsea striker got on the scoresheet. The victory takes them six points clear at the top, with the Czechs still 2nd but now only a point ahead of Wales, who have two games in hand. Wales came from behind to beat Belarus 3-2, with Gareth Bale's last-minute winner completing his hat-trick after two earlier penalties. The reality is, it doesn't really matter who finishes 2nd out of those two as whoever doesn't will almost certainly be in the playoffs anyway.

England made 11 changes to the side that beat Hungary but still enjoyed a comfortable victory over Andorra, though it wasn't until substitutions were made midway through the second half that goals really started to flow. Jesse Lingard scored his first international goals since 2018, Harry Kane came off the bench to score a penalty and Bukayo Saka doubled his tally for England. The Three Lions remain five points ahead of Poland, who put seven past San Marino, though they also conceded one - San Marino's 13th World Cup goal. England's destiny will still be in their own hands even if they lose to Poland on Wednesday. Hungary's hopes suffered a blow with defeat against Albania, who climb to 3rd and could move up to 2nd if Poland fail to beat England.
