With Australia not playing, Kuwait and Jordan keep up the pressure on the Socceroos. Both still have to travel to Australia though and the Aussies still have to play Nepal and the now-eliminated Chinese Taipei again.

A 0-0 draw between Iraq and Bahrain does neither side many favours. Iran will host both in their final two games. Iraq's game was played in Jordan though Hong Kong were still able to play at home in front of a crowd of 4,500 despite the ongoing protests.

In an incredibly tight group, leaders Vietnam are held at home by Thailand, who themselves would have gone top with a win. Malaysia climb to 2nd though top seeds the UAE, down in 4th, still have to play the top 3 at home. With the group so tight, it's likely only the winners will progress.

Another tight group with just a point separating the top 4. Turkmenistan's win sees them climb from 4th to 1st. South Korea have a game in hand and 3 home games still to come and should finish top. It's a battle for second between the others, with none of them managing to win away from home except against Sri Lanka.

Russia appear to be out of the World Cup after receiving a 4-year ban from WADA that also includes the Olympics. Amusingly, they can still compete at (and host) Euro 2020 next year as UEFA isn't recognised as a "major organisation".
UPDATE: Not adding to Russia to the 'eliminated' list yet as they are apparently free to participate in qualifying. However, should they qualify, they would potentially have to apply to compete as a team of neutrals rather than under the Russian flag.

A recap of where we're at as qualifying is set to resume this month.
EUROPE Teams: 55 Qualifying places: 13
The 55 teams will be arranged into 10 groups (5 groups of 6, 5 groups of 5). The 2020 Nations League will be taken into account in terms of deciding which teams are placed into a 5-team group, as was the case for the Euro 2020 qualifiers. The 10 group winners will qualify for the finals with the 10 runners-up going into the playoffs, where they'll be joined by the 2 highest ranked teams from the Nations League who finish outside the top 2 in World Cup qualifying. The 12 playoff teams will be divided into 3 paths, with the winner of each path qualifying for the finals. Qualifying is set to begin in March 2021.
SOUTH AMERICA Teams: 10 Qualifying places: 4.5
South America retains the same format used since the late 90s with all 10 teams playing in a single group. The top 4 qualify for the finals with the 5th placed team going into the intercontinental playoffs. Qualifying starts this month.
AFRICA Teams: 54 (40 remain) Qualifying places: 5
Africa has reverted to the format used for the 2014 World Cup. Which sees 40 teams in the 2nd round group stage playing in 10 groups of 4. The 10 group winners will go through to a knockout round with the 5 winners qualifying for the finals. The 2nd round is due to get underway in October.
ASIA Teams: 46 (40 currently playing in 2nd round) Qualifying places: 4.5
Asia has retained the format used in recent World Cups with qualifying doubling up as qualifying for the next Asian Cup. The 2nd round which is currently taking places sees 40 teams divided into 8 groups of 5. The 8 group winners plus the best 4 runners-up qualify for the 3rd round. Round 3 will see the 12 teams split into 2 groups of 6. The top 2 in each group will qualify for the World Cup. The 3rd place teams will playoff against each other with the winner going forward to the intercontinental playoffs. Qualifying is due to resume this month though it remains to be seen how the coronavirus outbreak will impact fixtures.
CONCACAF Teams: 35 Qualifying places: 3.5
CONCACAF has announced a radical new format for its World Cup qualifying tournament, aimed at being more inclusive and giving lower ranked teams more competitive matches (in addition to its own Nations League, which began last year), rather than having them eliminated 3 years before the finals. The new format will see the top 6 ranked teams in the June 2020 rankings play in their own hexagonal group (usually the final round of qualifying for CONCACAF) with the top 3 qualifying for the finals. The other 29 teams will have their own path and will be divided into 8 groups (5 groups of 4, 3 groups of 3). The 8 winners will then play a knockout tournament, with the winner going into a playoff against the 4th placed team from the top seeded "hex" group. The winner of that playoff will go forward to the intercontinental playoffs.
OCEANIA Teams: 11 Qualifying places: 0.5
The OFC hasn't bothered announcing any kind of format for its qualifiers yet. Qualifying is expected to begin in September but who knows? The winner of the Oceania qualifying section will progress to the intercontinental playoffs. With the World Cup expanding to 48 teams from 2026, this will be the last time Oceania doesn't have a guaranteed place at the finals.

It's been reported that the qualifying format for CONCACAF is set to change due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Rather than have the top 6 ranked teams go straight to the "Hex", determining the 3 automatic qualifiers, the proposed new format would see the top 12 split into 3 groups of 4, with the 3 winners qualifying automatically for the World Cup and the best runner-up going to a playoff with the winner of the playoff route involving the other 23 teams. The changes have been proposed due to the start of qualifying potentially being delayed past its intended September start date and also because the teams immediately below the top 6, such as Canada and Panama, have been unable to try and climb their way up due to all international football being cancelled in the last 3 months.

The new format for CONCACAF's qualifying competition has been confirmed and it's a bit different from the one that was previously rumoured. It will work like this: Teams are seeded 1-35, based on the FIFA world rankings. The top 5 seeds receive a bye to Round 3. The other 30 teams start in Round 1, where they will be drawn into six groups of five. In each group, teams will only play each other once, with two home games and two away. The six group winners will progress to Round 2, which will be a two-leg knockout to be played in March. The three winners will join the top seeds in Round 3, which will be a single group of eight. The top 3 qualify for the World Cup and the team finishing 4th goes forward to the intercontinental playoffs. Seedings: 1. Mexico 2. United States 3. Costa Rica 4. Jamaica 5. Honduras 6. El Salvador 7. Canada 8. Curacao 9. Panama 10. Haiti 11. Trinidad & Tobago 12. Antigua & Barbuda 13. Guatemala 14. St. Kitts & Nevis 15. Suriname 16. Nicaragua 17. Dominican Republic 18. Grenada 19. Barbados 20. Guyana 21. St. Vincent & the Grenadines 22. Bermuda 23. Belize 24. St. Lucia 25. Puerto Rico 26. Cuba 27. Montserrat 28. Dominica 29. Cayman Islands 30. Bahamas 31. Aruba 32. Turks & Caicos Islands 33. US Virgin Islands 34. British Virgin Islands 35. Anguilla The draw for Round 1 will take place on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the OFC has finally put together a proposed format for its qualifiers and it's awaiting ratification from FIFA. The plan is to have the 11 teams divided into two groups, with each group played in a single location. The top 2 in each group will progress to the next round, which will be a two-leg knockout and the two winners will then play a two-legged tie to determine which team goes forward to the intercontinental playoffs.
