This starts next week and hosts England go into the tournament as favourites to lift the trophy for the first time. Since the last World Cup, England's ODI fortunes have transformed dramatically, going from clueless underperformers to the top ranked team in the world, breaking records left, right and centre. The format has changed for this year's tournament, with the number of teams reduced to 10. That provoked an outcry that non-Test playing nations wouldn't be able to compete. The ICC compromised by re-introducing the qualifying tournament, with teams not ranked in the top 8 taking part. The West Indies and Afghanistan came through qualifying, meaning no place for Ireland or Zimbabwe, or any of the non-Test teams like Scotland, Holland or Canada. However, the format of the tournament itself is a big improvement, reverting to the system last seen in 1992, with all the teams in one group and the top 4 qualifying for the semi-finals. First warm-up games were played on Saturday. These don't count as official internationals with teams permitted to play more than 11 players during the match.
Australia 297-9 (50) England 285 (49.3) Australia won by 12 runs
India 179 (39.2) New Zealand 180-4 (37.1) New Zealand won by 6 wickets
England were without captain Eoin Morgan, who fractured a finger in training but is expected to be able to play in the opening game on Thursday.
India are second favourites but with the players just coming to England after months playing on the batsman-friendly IPL pitches, it's perhaps won't be a surprise if they don't hit the ground running.
Other scheduled warm-ups: Sun: Pakistan v Bangladesh, South Africa v West Indies Mon: Australia v Sri Lanka, England v Afghanistan Tue: Bangladesh v India, West Indies v New Zealand

I don’t get a lot of exposure to cricket news over here.
I am stunned to learn that the West Indies had to go through a qualification process. How the mighty have fallen.

I don’t get a lot of exposure to cricket news over here. I am stunned to learn that the West Indies had to go through a qualification process. How the mighty have fallen. Indeed, they'd slipped to 9th in the world rankings, behind Bangladesh. The talent pool dried up somewhat over the last couple of decades with many kids in the Caribbean opting to pursue a more lucrative career in football, rather than cricket. The fortunes haven't been helped by numerous disputes between the players and the West Indies board, meaning the team has often been left short of full strength. However, this team is capable of beating anyone on their day and if India struggle to adapt to the conditions like I mentioned in my previous post, I could see the West Indies sneaking into the top 4.

Bairstow out first ball but Roy and Root have settled in and England should be pushing 350...

In case anyone's wondering, Channel 4 will be showing nightly highlights. It generally seems to be at 11pm on a weeknight but later on weekends. Unless I'm mistaken I believe it's Channel 4's first cricket coverage since the legendary 2005 Ashes. It reminds me of the little clips Channel 4 would show between programmes showing stars of its shows watching other shows and one of them featured Graham Norton watching the cricket, running up and down his kitchen using a frying pan as a bat!

England still going nicely. Roy and Root both reach 50 in quick succession, though South Africa's bowlers have managed to slow the run rate a little.

The ICC have never been able to determine the best format for the World Cup...
Year: Number of teams (debutants) 1975: 8 (England, India, Australia, Pakistan, West Indies, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, East Africa) 1979: 8 (Canada) 1983: 8 (Zimbabwe) 1987: 8 (none) 1992: 9 (South Africa) 1996: 12 (Kenya, Netherlands, United Arab Emirates) 1999: 12 (Bangladesh, Scotland) 2003: 14 (Namibia) 2007: 16 (Bermuda, Ireland) 2011: 14 (none) 2015: 14 (Afghanistan) 2019: 10 (none)

I shall have to remember to stay out of here if I want surprising in the highlights, but if they are on that late, I'll find the results out anyway. I could have sworn I'd set a series record and it said tonight at 8pm, I will double check and let people know.

England make 311-8 from their 50 overs. Good bowling performance by South Africa to restrict England, who never found that extra gear required to make a really big score and instead have to settle for what they would've felt was the minimum needed.
Four England players reached 50 but none went on to reach 100, with Ben Stokes top scoring with 89.

Ben Stokes has just taken what must be the greatest catch in World Cup history. 183-7 now.

Stokes was looking a bit iffy in the warm-up games. He's certainly played well today.
I have tickets for England's next game, at Trent Bridge versus Pakistan.

Game 1, The Oval: England 311-8 (50) Stokes 89, Morgan 57, Roy 54, Root 51; Ngidi 3-66 South Africa 207 all out (39.5) de Kock 68, van der Dussen 50; Archer 3-27 England win by 104 runsMan of the Match: Ben Stokes In the end, a convincing win for England. The pitch ended up being much more difficult to bat on than first anticipated and England's score turned out to be an excellent one in the circumstances. Ben Stokes hit 89, ran out Dwaine Pretorious, took that amazing catch as well as the final two wickets, making him an easy choice for Man of the Match. Jofra Archer was very impressive on his World Cup debut, just weeks after becoming eligible to play for England.

Wow at that catch! And the highlights are on Sky One at 8pm, but not at that time every night.
