The men's T20 World Cup got underway yesterday, taking place in the UAE and Oman after being moved from Australia, then India.
It started with Oman beating Papua New Guinea and Scotland earning a very good win over Bangladesh. The first round features the 9th and 10th seeds plus the 6 qualifiers playing in 2 groups of 4, with the top 2 in each group going through to the Super 12 stage where they join the top 8 seeds.

The first round of the T20 World Cup is complete. No surprise that Sri Lanka breezed through by winning Group A but it's Namibia who join them after they beat Ireland in their final group game. In Group B, Scotland finished top after winning 3 out of 3, joined by Bangladesh after they recovered from their opening defeat to win their last two games. GROUP A 1. Sri Lanka 6 2. Namibia 4 ------------------------------- 3. Ireland 2 4. Netherlands 0 GROUP B 1. Scotland 6 2. Bangladesh 4 -------------------------------- 3. Oman 2 4. Papua New Guinea 0 SUPER 12 GROUP 1 Australia Bangladesh England South Africa Sri Lanka West Indies GROUP 2 Afghanistan India Namibia New Zealand Pakistan Scotland England fixtures: Sat 23 Oct - West Indies Wed 27 Oct - Bangladesh Sat 30 Oct - Australia Mon 1 Nov - Sri Lanka Sat 6 Nov - South Africa Scotland fixtures: Mon 25 Oct - Afghanistan Wed 27 Oct - Namibia Wed 3 Nov - New Zealand Fri 5 Nov - India Sun 7 Nov - Pakistan The top 2 in each group go through to the semi-finals.

Group 1 looks a lot harder than Group 2.

A great start to the tournament for England, bowling the West Indies out for just 55 and taking just 50 balls to reach their target. Adil Rashid took a sensational 4-2 to mop up the Windies tail, with Chris Gayle the only player to reach double figures for the reigning champions. England knocked off the runs with relative ease, Jos Buttler top scoring with an unbeaten 24.
South Africa seem to reserve their worst form for World Cups and they started this one in typical fashion, collapsing to 83-7 against Australia before eventually making 115-9. On a slow wicket, Australia struggled to score but reached their target with two balls to spare.

Very contrasting fortunes for the two tournament favourites. England crushed Australia yesterday to make it 3 dominant wins out of 3. India are in huge trouble, following up a 10-wicket defeat to arch rivals Pakistan with a miserable display against New Zealand today. Meanwhile, Scotland have found the Super 12 stage a real struggle, losing by 130 runs to Afghanistan, then being reduced to 2-3 by Namibia, before eventually making 109 and going on to lose by 4 wickets. GROUP 1 1. England 3-6 2. South Africa 3-4 -------------------------------- 3. Australia 3-4 4. Sri Lanka 3-2 5. West Indies 3-2 6. Bangladesh 3-0 GROUP 2 1. Pakistan 3-6 2. Afghanistan 3-4 ---------------------------------- 3. New Zealand 2-2 4. Namibia 2-2 5. India 2-0 6. Scotland 2-0

4 wins out of 4 for England with victory over Sri Lanka, though they were pushed harder than in any of the previous games.
England fell to 35-3 but rallied to reach on 163-4, with Jos Buttler scoring the first century of the tournament, hitting a six of the final ball of the innings to finish on an unbeaten 101. Sri Lanka were well in contention during their innings but despite losing Tymal Mills to injury, England's bowlers fought back and Sri Lanka collapsed from 129-5 to 137 all out.
Buttler joins Heather Knight as the only other player to score a century for England in all three formats of the game.

The Ashes gets underway tonight. Australia looked hot favourites a few months ago but a disrupted build-up for both teams plus a late change of captain for the Aussies look to have made things somewhat unpredictable.

1st Test: Dec 8-12 (Brisbane) 2nd Test: Dec 16-20 (Adelaide) (day/night) 3rd Test: Dec 26-30 (Melbourne) 4th Test: Jan 5-9 (Sydney) 5th Test: Jan 14-18 (venue TBC) (day/night)
The final test was originally due to take place in Perth but is being moved due to Covid restrictions, with Hobart a possible venue. It will also now be a day/night, which potentially plays into England's hands.

No Anderson or Broad farcical Doesn't really help the fragile batting situation. Anderson is less of a surprise as he was never going to play all 5 tests and the 2nd test is day/night which should suit him better. But I don't understand leaving out Broad, especially given his record bowling to Warner.

And there goes Stokes. 29/4.
I was going to put some money on England to score under 200 but couldn't get a price so I went no England batsman to reach 50 at 8/1.
