This starts next week and hosts England go into the tournament as favourites to lift the trophy for the first time. Since the last World Cup, England's ODI fortunes have transformed dramatically, going from clueless underperformers to the top ranked team in the world, breaking records left, right and centre.
The format has changed for this year's tournament, with the number of teams reduced to 10. That provoked an outcry that non-Test playing nations wouldn't be able to compete. The ICC compromised by re-introducing the qualifying tournament, with teams not ranked in the top 8 taking part. The West Indies and Afghanistan came through qualifying, meaning no place for Ireland or Zimbabwe, or any of the non-Test teams like Scotland, Holland or Canada. However, the format of the tournament itself is a big improvement, reverting to the system last seen in 1992, with all the teams in one group and the top 4 qualifying for the semi-finals.
