Quarter-final: England storm into the semi-finals for the second World Cup in a row with a magnificent performance against Norway. Jill Scott put England ahead inside 3 minutes, the quickest goal of the tournament so far, Ellen White added a second before half time and is now the tournament's joint top scorer. Lucy Bronze scored a stunning third from 20 yards in the second half. Norway created some chances themselves, with Steph Houghton making a goalline clearance but England were always on top and could even afford another penalty miss from Nikita Parris with 5 minutes to go.

It was great, but they do worry me defensively, Norway made 3 good chances which maybe a better team will take, and then we're under pressure, that 3rd goal though, superb!

This is the 5th summer in a row in which a home nation has reached the semi-finals of a major football tournament (male or female). If the semi-final on Tuesday goes the same way as the previous 4, then England's final 4 matches in this tournament will all have come exactly 52 weeks to the day since matches played by England's men's team in last year's World Cup (against Panama, Belgium, Colombia and Sweden).

Quarter-final: Megan Rapinoe's double saw the USA through to the semi-finals and a meeting with England. Her 2 goals mean she joins team-mate Alex Morgan, England's Ellen White and Australia's Sam Kerr as joint top-scorer in the tournament with 5. The USA preserve their perfect record of reaching at least the semi-finals of every Women's World Cup. France's exit means England are guaranteed to be one of the last 3 European teams left in the competition and as a result, Great Britain have qualified for the women's football competition at next year's Olympics. The home nations agreed last year that a GB women's side could compete if they qualified but no such agreement was made for a men's team. As it turned out, England's poor performance at the Euro U21s means they wouldn't have qualified anyway.

Quarter-finals: Two set piece headers sent European champions Holland through to their first World Cup semi-final. They will meet Sweden, who came from behind to spring a surprise against Germany. The USA are the only previous champions remaining in the tournament.

This is the 4th consecutive Women's World Cup in which the host nation has been eliminated in the quarter-finals.

Good performance by the US to run out deserved winners.
The first US goal was a shocking failure by the French defense and the US were very poor on the French free kick goal. The way the US killed the game off in stoppage time was masterful.
I still have a question mark over the US keeper. Does not inspire confidence.

England keeper Karen Bardsley has a hamstring injury so Carly Telford starts in goal tonight. After scoring 4 goals in the USA's last 2 games, Megan Rapinoe is only on the bench.

Strong start by the USA as they get their obligatory early goal but England equalise minutes later through Ellen White's 6th goal of the tournament.
