Enjoy the TOTP repeats while you can, it's been announced today that the BBC are moving BBC4 and CBBC online. Such a shame BBC4 are a great channel. ... Edit: We're not going to lose it just yet it's a few years away so we can still enjoy 1993 www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-61591674

Just watching the 1992 Christmas Day edition. “April was a great year for music” - how did things like that slip through? Would’ve taken about 2 minute to re-record it.

Blues 9-1 Liverpool eve. Franklin as we seem to have run out of Simon. "A great song from a great band". Well, a Barry Manilow song is not great, Fake tw*t are not a band, and they're not great. Lying ****.
Freddie Mercury at no. 11 with a retro clip show. So, a cover version and a dead singer. This is shaping up to be a great show. Not.
Shai(te), who are on because they're in the US charts. A capella. Dudes have got talent but the song is anodyne. But yay for wasting a slot on a song that won't even make the top 30.
Then we get some wrestlers, Ms Ross doing Disney, and K f***ing W f***ing S.
Breakers are a Miami Sound Machine medley, Lemonheads doing a cover, an 808 remix, and an unusually interesting one from Madonna.
Cliff being Cliff, still has a market.
Shitney at no. 1, God that was a depressing show.
So...the highlight of the show is six seconds from Madonna. That's an outright indictment.

So...the highlight of the show is six seconds from Madonna. That's an outright indictment. A genuinely historic moment in the history of this thread and it’s predecessor if you’re saying Madonna provided an episode highlight! To Be fair, although the Lemonheads track is a cover, it’s a very good one.

Completely, totally, and utterly unnecessary though.

The only year in which there was a 30 February. (In Sweden.) Shamen start and they at least make an effort with their appearance, being basically Alice In Wonderland, but the song is basically "Move Any Mountain".
Chart rundown is Madonna. Then we have "one of the cleverest cover versions I've [Dortie] ever heard". What that means is East Side Beat (lead singer David Brent) have put a bog-standard computerized drum beat over a straight copy of Simple Minds. So we extrapolate from that that Dortie has never heard any music ever before in his entire life. Oddly the dancers are advertizing Channel 4's Football Italia.
Gloria Estefan, who basically decides to strap together all her old sh*t into some new sh*t.
Lemonheads, with the third cover on the trot. Four out of five if one includes the opening track. It's also three songs that were on last week.
Breakers. Nirvana, this should have been on in full because it breaks the utter monotony of what has been an utterly terrible show thus far. Slipstreem, WITH A f***ing COVER. Wedding Present with a sludgey Chrimbo song that would also have been better off in full.
Lisa Stansfield, wearing a very, VERY stupid hat. Starts off OK then they basically throw that f***ing stupid computerized drumbeat over it.
Dortie seems to have gone completely Upminster in this episode. He's now calling for Michael Jackson to get the Nobel Peace Prize. As we see the sort of song that St Winifred's School Choir would have rejected for being too cloying, sentimental, gloopy, pandering, and cheap. This could be the worst thing to have happened to humankind in its entire evolutionary history.
Cover at no. 1.
Again, a woeful line-up with zero imagination or hope. I've said before that, if I were the producer, I would have been saying "no Undercover". I think by now I would be saying "no cover versions AT ALL unless they are number 1".

Was it skipped because of Rolf Harris?

May as well do that missing ep above because it's ground to a halt...
St Etienne with the most gorgeous slice of perfect pop. Is this one of those that was done for because of a bad title? It's easy to miss the title line whereas something like "Dial My Number" stands out far better. Love the bored Elvis lamé, I doubt that geetar is of any use at all, love the drum roundel taking influence from Ringo, and of course head over heels love Sarah.
Dortie introduces us to Annie Lennox trying to be Kate Bush. It's not bad, it sounds like it fits with the whole film idea.
East 17. Way more sophisticated and budgeted than their debut, way more complex than anything that the f***ing talentless Stokie Mancs are defaecating out. It's not my tasse de thé but there's moxie here.
Thunder doing acoustic. This really is "Every Rose Has Its Thorn", isn't it?
"First the breakers and then some Rolf Harris." Heh. Deacon Blue trying to look rawk and dangerous is like casting Kenneth Williams as Rambo. Quite like the song though. Heh, Poison, someone really is taking the p*ss, isn't it? Jon Secada with something Michael Bolton might have rejected.
Rolf Harris. I like this. So sue me. At univ I predicted this would go top ten. I was looked on as a Seer. The t-shirt/jacket combo is a stealth pun. I love the Miss Given. And the uber stupid joke about bought/brought.
Charles & Eddie with something rather charming and mellow. I like.
This was actually a really good episode, and then you get to the number one, and it's, well, someone has let the toddlers out. You'd think anyone buying 2 Untalented given what else has been on the show would be embarrassed at their choice. Probably too stupid to realize. Bit like a scarab doesn't realize it's rolling sh*t for a living.

I’m not really much of a metal fan, but Fear Of The Dark by Iron Maiden is absolutely epic, surely their finest moment.
Serious change of direction to have Shaggy straight after it, but Oh Carolina’s great too and he really looked like he was enjoying himself.

Hello, they seem to have been re-started without them telling me. And they seem to have missed a bit out. Lady Day 1993, then. We start with Sybil, who is one of the many answers to the question "whose entire career was cover versions which were basically the original with a programmed and very sh*t dance beat?" Life is too short to waste three minutes of it on Sybil.
The Bluebells, who are a new entry at 5 thanks to a VW advert. The funny thing is they already seem a retro act, even though only 9 years have passed. Which is less time than one f***ing Sheeran song has spent in the charts (probably). Music used to move on apace. Something weird happening in the broadcast; they cut a bit out pretty ineptly.
Shabba Ranks. Shiter Wanks.
Jade. Well, this is a great show for all of us who are not keen on dance music. f***ing hell.
Robin S. See Jade.
Cliff Richard. Bleh.
Breakers. Bananarama with a very bad, very needless, cover version. Sunscreem, more dance. David Bowie, new in at 10, with a very good, very interesting, song, and a very good video, so we get about four seconds of it BECAUSE WE HAVE NOT GOT ENOUGH DANCE AND THAT IS GOING TO COME FROM LULU AND BOBBY WOMACK FOR I DON'T f***ing KNOW EVEN LULU PROBABLY HATES THIS
Shaggy is at no. 1.
Well, that was an appallingly planned show. Even Marcus Garvey would have been a bit embarrassed by it. The only things that were not oriented to one narrow audience were a 9 year old single and one for the grandmothers.
The only reason for Sybil to be on was if SAW were threatening to pull all their acts. I am very suspicious how some of their even-shiter acts get on the show when there's no reason for it. Just think for a second. Someone had a choice. "We can either have a video from Bowie, or Sybil", AND THEY CHOSE SYBIL.

April Fool's Day. Fortunately past 12pm so everything on should be 4 real. Cappella, so yet again we are in dance, this time Italo techno that is not readily distinguishable from all of the others. Does anyone actually listen to this tripe? There's no depth there at all. Surely this should be confined to dance clubs... Madonna with a sh*t needless cover. "For" Mica Paris with something r&b. f***ing hell, when was the last song with a guitar in it? Sunscreem. There's a guitar in the video but it's not apparent in the song. Is there a deliberate editorial decision to segregate TOTP into being solely a dance music show? This is, again, a dreadful line-up. Breakers start with, er, Bill Tarmey. (Naturally it's a cover.) Arrested Development, again hip-hop but a bit more to this one, shambolic and daisy age. And the WWF Superstars, which is basically the SAW team with occasional wrestlers. Including the Nasty Boys, ooh I'm scared, don't want anyone NASTY. And Gloria Estefan with what appears to be an homage to Lolly. Springsteen. Live on stage. Not my thing but THANK GOD for the SLIGHTEST degree of variation. And now...Barry Manilow goes hip-hop. Oh dear sweet God, this could be the worst thing that has ever happened to humankind. Who. In. The. Name. Of. Everything. That. Is. Holy. Looked. At. The. Charts. And. Thought. "WHAT WE NEED IS A BARRY MANILOW REMIX!!!!!" The Bluebells at no. 1. Now. There's a message there, isn't there? People prefer a 9 year old good old-fashioned pop single to all the dance sh*te that the production ****s are force-feeding down everyone's throat. Hence the pisstaking shout of TECHNOTECHNOTECHNOTECHNO at the end. That song apart, that was a terrible, terrible, terrible show. Indeed, looking at that week's 75, that was the worst possible line-up they could have chosen. At every point where there was an editorial choice, they chose the wrong song. Every. Single. f***ing. Time. Every one picked was a dance dud.
They could have had Bowie, a full Arrested Development, Sonic Youth (SONIC f***ing YOUTH!!!!!!!!), Apache Indian, the Almighty, Screamin Jay Hawkins; looking at the new releases they could have had 10,000 Maniacs, Back To The Planet, even Aerosmith. And instead they had a BARRY MANILOW REMIX. Just think of that. Sonic Youth, or a Barry Manilow remix. SONIC f***ing YOUTH or a Barry Manilow remix. Sonic. f***ing. Youth. Rejected for a Barry. Manilow. Remix. That is the LITERAL definition of insanity. There is not one cogent competent intelligent human being on the planet that could think that, on a music show, aimed at the entire country, with a remit to showing challenging and imaginative music, that would, when presented with Sonic Youth or a Barry Manilow Remix, would voluntarily choose a Barry Manilow Remix.
It's staggering. It's literally stupefying. I cannot fathom this. Barry Manilow over Sonic Youth. BARRY MANILOW OVER SONIC YOUTH.

2322. Doves with Melanie Williams, whose attire and barnet would not look out of place today. I have a hypothesis that youtube has stopped vestimental evolution because the 1990s clothing is now the norm for many of the most familiar youtube clips. This is OK, but nothing more, bassist looks like he's desperate for a sh*t.
Dortie must have just knocked off from Butlins. Why is Sybil defecating on my screen again? Someone. Is. Taking. A. Pay. Off.
Jade, another dance-y act who were on last week. Yes, they are all very very fanciable, but, f***'s sake, this is meant to be about music and YET AGAIN THE ENTIRE SHOW SEEMS TO BE GEARED AT ONE VERY NARROW DEMOGRAPHIC.
And who is the token representative for the pop generation? David Essex. With, and you're going to be TOTALLY MINDFUCKED BY THIS, a cover version.
f***.
ING.
HELL.
Robin S. THIS IS LITERALLY A PREVIOUS EDITION. THERE IS NO f***ing POINT WATCHING THIS.
EVEN THE f***ing BREAKERS ARE DANCE. DOCTOR f***ing ALBAN. f***ing MANILOW AGAIN. AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN. And there are about six seconds of Aerosmith BECAUSE WE NEEDED ALL OF SYBIL. Duran Duran sounding blissed out, this is a departure AND WE NEEDED MORE OF THIS RATHER THAN f***ing SYBIL.
Violin, what's this? Beloved. This is light years better than anything else on the show and even then it's not as good as their previous one. But at least it's a change in pace and feel.
New Order, being watched, in one of those "huh?" moments, by David Hasselhoff. Erm, did I dream that? No, there he is again. This is almost a pure pop single with limited synthfluence. Could this be a number 1? It's got that vibe. Are we going to see Hasselhoff working with Electronic? The whole beach thing with a bikini babe on a fake telephone and Hooky pulling rock shapes is utterly bizarre, it's like Hieronymus Bosch drew it up. Heh, Dortie thinks future no. 1 too.
Bluebells at no. 1, and we get the video, with Clare (be still my heart), Molly Weir, and Stratford Johns. You know, it was something of a triumph when this made the top ten back in the day, like it was finally a modicum of success for a band that had been struggling away for a while and unlikely to be repeated...and yet it's now at the very acme. Note now that Clare Grogan has had a number 1 (in the NME chart), been the inspiration for a number one (True) ("True"), and now been in the video for a number 1.

15/4 as Franklin lies about TOTP being Europe's most exciting music show. Not least as we start with E17 performing the dictionary definition of "dirge" in a front room mockup. This is truly terrible. Either it's a fourth single from an album or the creative well has died pretty quickly.
In the studio, Dr Alban, because WE HAVE NOT HAD ENOUGH DANCE. f*** OFF. Jesus, he can't even talk in tune.
Duran Duran, this is OK, it does not work so well over a full play as the breaker snippet.
Cappella. Oh God.
Terence "Trout" d'Arby. Do you think Dr Alban and Cappella were watching him and thinking, OK, that's what a genuine talent sounds like? Or were they just counting the money from their total sh*te bought by total cretins? Also what happened to black rock stars? Can't think of any at the moment.
Breakers. REM with something rather sweet, so naturally it does not get played, because we need Doctor f***ing Alban and his tuneless caterwaul. Rod Stewart, with something even he's probably forgotten. The Prodigy, because DANCE. And New Order, because they were on last week.
Sonia with the Eurovision entry, that is basically Belle & The Devotions, but with a less good singer.
World Party. Dull, but, compared to the dance sh*te that has been curled out in the last few episodes, like walking into a cold shower refreshing.
Interesting that Snow climbs back to no. 2 but doesn't get a play. Bluebells are basically taking the p*ss with a fake disco show. My God, the girl in the Daisy Dukes on the far left is totes adorbs. Heh, Shabba.
Next week we have an exclusive from Janet Jackson. Deep joy.
