Pool C: FRANCE 23-21 ARGENTINA Argentina almost pull off the biggest comeback in World Cup history, missing a last-minute penalty to win, having trailed 20-3 at half-time. Their game against England in 2 weeks already becomes must-win. The Pumas haven't failed to reach the quarter-finals since 2003.

Pool B: NEW ZEALAND 23-13 SOUTH AFRICA South Africa dominated the first 20 minutes but only had a penalty to show for their efforts and the All Blacks soon moved through the gears to open up a 17-3 half-time lead. South Africa threatened a second half comeback but the world champions had enough to keep the Springboks at bay and take their record in the pool stage to played 29, won 29.

Pool B: ITALY 45-22 NAMIBIA A routine win for Italy, picking up the bonus point in the process. Namibia had led through an early try before the Azzurri took control. A couple of late tries for Namibia made the scoreline respectable and they were only one short of picking up a point of their own in the end. Table: 1. Italy 1-5 (+23) 2. New Zealand 1-4 (+10) ----------------------- 3. Canada 0-0 (0) 4. South Africa 1-0 (-10) 5. Namibia 1-0 (-23)

Pool A: IRELAND 27-3 SCOTLAND A fairly easy win for the world's best team (according the highly suspect world rankings) with 3 first half tries setting them on their way. The heavens opened in the second half but Ireland managed to add a fourth try to earn a bonus point. Even with a man advantage in the final 10 minutes, Scotland couldn't make any impression and the prospect of a winner-takes-all decider against Japan looms large. Table: 1. Ireland 1-5 (+24) 2. Japan 1-5 (+20) ------------------------ 3. Samoa 0-0 (0) 4. Russia 1-0 (-20) 5. Scotland 1-0 (-24)

Good half for England. 18-3 up at HT, coping well with a physical Tonga side and two tries for Manu Tuilagi.

Pool C: ENGLAND 35-3 TONGA A comfortable bonus point win for England with Jamie George and Luke Cowan-Dickie adding to Manu Tuilagi's first half double. Not a perfect performance by any means but with the second game just 4 days away, England will be happy to get through unscathed and with maximum points. Table: 1. England 1-5 (+32) 2. France 1-4 (+2) -------------------- 3. Argentina 1-1 (-2) 4. USA 0-0 (0) 5. Tonga 1-0 (-32)

Expected the final score to be closer and from what I saw there wasn't much between them.

Bare minimum from England, job done.

Pool D: WALES 43-14 GEORGIA A flying start for Wales who scored 3 tries in the opening 20 minutes and had the bonus point in the bag by half-time. Georgia's nerves settled after the break and they actually matched the Welsh in terms of points in the second half. Table: 1. Wales 1-5 (+29) 2. Australia 1-5 (+18) -------------------- 3. Uruguay 0-0 (0) 4. Fiji 1-0 (-18) 5. Georgia 1-0 (-29)

Pool A: RUSSIA 9-34 SAMOA Russia led 6-5 after first half in which Samoa were fortunate to have two players shown yellow cards rather than reds but they soon found their rhythm and made the tired Russian legs pay, scoring 6 tries in total. Table: 1. Samoa 1-5 (+25) 2. Ireland 1-5 (+24) ------------------------ 3. Japan 1-5 (+20) 4. Scotland 1-0 (-24) 5. Russia 2-0 (-45)

Pool D: FIJI 27-30 URUGUAY Uruguay produced a stunning upset to beat Fiji and give themselves a chance of automatic qualification for the next World Cup. After trailing early, Uruguay scored three tries before half-time to lead 24-12. Fiji fought back in the second half but fell short, missing out on 11 points through unsuccessful kicks. It was Uruguay's first game of the tournament, while Fiji were coming off a 4-day turnaround after playing Australia on Saturday. England's decision to make 10 changes for their game against the USA tomorrow looks very wise. Table: 1. Wales 1-5 (+29) 2. Australia 1-5 (+18) ------------------------ 3. Uruguay 1-4 (+3) 4. Fiji 2-2 (-21) 5. Georgia 1-0 (-29)

Pool B: ITALY 48-7 CANADA An easy win for Italy in the end, though the half-time scoreline of 17-0 was somewhat misleading as Canada missed several golden opportunities to get back into the game after going behind early. Italy dominated the second half, finishing with 7 tries in total to earn another bonus point. Table: 1. Italy 2-10 (+64) 2. New Zealand 1-4 (+10) ----------------------- 3. South Africa 1-0 (-10) 4. Namibia 1-0 (-23) 5. Canada 1-0 (-41)

Pool C: ENGLAND 45-7 USA A comfortable win for England, who dominated the game, scoring seven tries. The USA posed no threat whatsoever until scoring a consolation try after time was up. The game saw the first red card of the tournament with the USA's John Quill sent off for a shoulder charge to the head of Owen Farrell, though England's Piers Francis was fortunate to away with something similar in the opening seconds of the game and may face retrospective action. Table: 1. England 2-10 (+70) 2. France 1-4 (+3) ------------------------ 3. Argentina 1-1 (-3) 4. Tonga 1-0 (-32) 5. USA 1-0 (-38)

Pool C: ARGENTINA 28-12 TONGA Argentina picked up their first win with a dominant first half performance that saw them clinch the bonus point within 25 minutes. Tonga prevented any further score in the second half but couldn't find a way back into the game. Table: 1. England 2-10 (+70) 2. Argentina 2-6 (+13) ------------------------ 3. France 1-4 (+3) 4. USA 1-0 (-38) 5. Tonga 2-0 (-48)

Pool A: JAPAN 19-12 IRELAND The hosts produced a sensational performance to beat Ireland and go top of the pool. The Irish led 12-9 at half-time but Kenki Fukuoka's try put Japan in front with 20 minutes remaining and a late penalty sealed the victory with Ireland incapable of summoning a response. And while this will go down as a monumental upset it should be seen in a different light to the 'Miracle of Brighton' four years ago. That was Japan knocking on the door. This was Japan kicking the door down and announcing themselves as a force to reckoned with in the sport. Since the World Cup began in 1987, 12 teams have reached the quarter-finals. Japan are odds-on to make that 13 this year. Table: 1. Japan 2-9 (+27) 2. Ireland 2-6 (+17) ------------------------ 3. Samoa 1-5 (+25) 4. Scotland 1-0 (-24) 5. Russia 2-0 (-45)

Pool B: SOUTH AFRICA 57-3 NAMIBIA The Springboks scored 9 tries to complate the most one-sided victory of the tournament so far. Table: 1. Italy 2-10 (+64) 2. South Africa 2-5 (+44) ------------------------- 3. New Zealand 1-4 (+10) 4. Canada 1-0 (-41) 5. Namibia 2-0 (-79)

Pool D: GEORGIA 33-7 URUGUAY AUSTRALIA 25-29 WALES Wales win a thriller against the 2-time champions, holding off a dramatic second half comeback, having led 23-8 at half-time. Georgia picked up their first win of the tournaments, with Uruguay unable to repeat their heroics from Wednesday. Should Georgia beat Fiji, it could set up a slightly nervy head-to-head decider with Australia... Table: 1. Wales 2-9 (+33) 2. Australia 2-6 (+14) ----------------------- 3. Georgia 2-5 (-3) 4. Uruguay 2-4 (-23) 5. Fiji 2-2 (-21)
