28 April 1956:
1 ( 1 ) You Can't Be True To Two - Dave King With The Keynotes < 2nd week at #1 > 2 ( 3 ) Long Tall Sally - Little Richard 3 ( 8 ) Ain't Misbehavin' - Johnnie Ray 4 ( 7 ) Man With The Golden Arm - Richard Maltby 5 ( 2 ) Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley (#1[6])
6 ( 4 ) Willie Can - Alma Cogan (#2[2]) 7 ( 6 ) The Italian Theme - Cyril Stapleton (#6) 8 ( 5 ) Nothin' To Do - Michael Holliday (#5) 9 ( 13 ) In A Persian Market - Sammy Davis Jr 10 ( -- ) Standing On The Corner - Four Lads
11 ( 9 ) Moonglow - George Cates (#9) 12 ( -- ) Mountain Greenery - Mel Tormé 13 ( 11 ) I'm A Fool - Slim Whitman (#11) 14 ( 18 ) The Happy Whistler - Don Robertson 15 ( -- ) In A Little Spanish Town - Bing Crosby
16 ( 21 ) No Other Love - Ronnie Hilton 17 ( 10 ) Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins (#2[3]) 18 ( 14 ) I Was The One - Elvis Presley (#9) 19 ( 12 ) Hot Diggity (Dog Ziggity Boom) - Perry Como (#3) 20 ( -- ) Lost John - Lonnie Donegan
-- ( 15 ) Bo Weevil - Teresa Brewer (#4) -- ( 16 ) Tumbling Tumbleweeds - Slim Whitman (#5) -- ( 17 ) (You've Got) The Magic Touch - Platters (#10) -- ( 19 ) Lipstick And Candy And Rubbersole Shoes - Julius LaRosa (#1[1]) -- ( 20 ) A Tear Fell - Teresa Brewer (#7)
I did consider letting the chart be a top 25 this week as I do have enough songs to come in next week but I will expand it then. So Teresa Brewer loses both her chart hits. Bo Weevil peaked higher but A Tear Fell spent longer in the chart.

5 May 1956:
1 ( 1 ) You Can't Be True To Two - Dave King With The Keynotes < 3rd week at #1 > 2 ( 3 ) Ain't Misbehavin' - Johnnie Ray 3 ( 2 ) Long Tall Sally - Little Richard (#2[1]) 4 ( 4 ) Man With The Golden Arm - Richard Maltby 5 ( 10 ) Standing On The Corner - Four Lads
6 ( 12 ) Mountain Greenery - Mel Tormé 7 ( 9 ) In A Persian Market - Sammy Davis Jr 8 ( 15 ) In A Little Spanish Town - Bing Crosby 9 ( 6 ) Willie Can - Alma Cogan (#2[2]) 10 ( 5 ) Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley (#1[6])
11 ( 7 ) The Italian Theme - Cyril Stapleton (#6) 12 ( -- ) Mr Wonderful - Peggy Lee 13 ( 14 ) The Happy Whistler - Don Robertson 14 ( 8 ) Nothin' To Do - Michael Holliday (#5) 15 ( 20 ) Lost John - Lonnie Donegan
16 ( 16 ) No Other Love - Ronnie Hilton 17 ( -- ) Hell Hath No Fury - Frankie Laine 18 ( 11 ) Moonglow - George Cates (#9) 19 ( -- ) I'm In Love Again - Fats Domino 20 ( 13 ) I'm A Fool - Slim Whitman (#11)
21 ( -- ) The Wayward Wind - Gogi Grant 22 ( -- ) Can You Find It In Your Heart - Tony Bennett 23 ( 18 ) I Was The One - Elvis Presley (#9) 24 ( -- ) I Want You To Be My Girl - Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers 25 ( 17 ) Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins (#2[3])
-- ( 19 ) Hot Diggity (Dog Ziggity Boom) - Perry Como (#3)
Back up to a top 25. My normal practice of not letting new versions of old songs in unless there is a significant change / improvement but having done the 1960s first there are 3 songs here that made a comeback in the 1960s. Ain't Misbehavin' reached #7 in my chart for Tommy Bruce in 1962 and Standing On The Corner #12 for the King Brothers in 1960. However Frank Ifield's version of Wayward Wind didn't make it into my chart.
Peggy Lee enters in 1956 with the highest new entry and had the only new entry in a recently posted chart I did in 1969 albeit that was not newly compiled.
Fats Domino gets into the chart, after a cover of his song Ain't That A Shame was a hit on this chart for Pat Boone. Pat Boone's UK #1 "I'll Be Home" which was released in the US with his cover of Tutti Frutti, did not make it into my chart.

12 May 1956:
1 ( 1 ) You Can't Be True To Two - Dave King With The Keynotes < 4th week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) Ain't Misbehavin' - Johnnie Ray 3 ( 5 ) Standing On The Corner - Four Lads 4 ( 6 ) Mountain Greenery - Mel Tormé 5 ( 4 ) Man With The Golden Arm - Richard Maltby (#4)
6 ( 3 ) Long Tall Sally - Little Richard (#2[1]) 7 ( 8 ) In A Little Spanish Town - Bing Crosby 8 ( 12 ) Mr Wonderful - Peggy Lee 9 ( 7 ) In A Persian Market - Sammy Davis Jr (#7) 10 ( 17 ) Hell Hath No Fury - Frankie Laine
11 ( -- ) Too Young To Go Steady - Nat King Cole 12 ( 19 ) I'm In Love Again - Fats Domino 13 ( 15 ) Lost John - Lonnie Donegan 14 ( 9 ) Willie Can - Alma Cogan (#2[2]) 15 ( 13 ) The Happy Whistler - Don Robertson (#13)
16 ( 21 ) The Wayward Wind - Gogi Grant 17 ( 22 ) Can You Find It In Your Heart - Tony Bennett 18 ( 11 ) The Italian Theme - Cyril Stapleton (#6) 19 ( 10 ) Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley (#1[6]) 20 ( 16 ) No Other Love - Ronnie Hilton (#16)
21 ( 24 ) I Want You To Be My Girl - Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers 22 ( -- ) The Church Bells May Ring - Diamonds 23 ( 14 ) Nothin' To Do - Michael Holliday (#5) 24 ( 18 ) Moonglow - George Cates (#9) 25 ( 20 ) I'm A Fool - Slim Whitman (#11)
-- ( 23 ) I Was The One - Elvis Presley (#9) -- ( 25 ) Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins (#2[3])
I have now reached the end of the "scored-up" playlist for this year, I have another one. The top song on that though is right at the end chronologically, so I'm not sure yet how much longer Dave King will remain on top. On the last playlist his song was clearly the top song with the Four Lads second.

26 May 1956:
1 ( 1 ) You Can't Be True To Two - Dave King With The Keynotes < 6th week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) Standing On The Corner - Four Lads 3 ( 5 ) Too Young To Go Steady - Nat King Cole 4 ( 4 ) Mountain Greenery - Mel Tormé 5 ( 3 ) Ain't Misbehavin' - Johnnie Ray (#2[2])
6 ( 6 ) Mr Wonderful - Peggy Lee 7 ( 7 ) Hell Hath No Fury - Frankie Laine 8 ( -- ) Out Of Town - Max Bygraves 9 ( -- ) Graduation Day - Rover Boys 10 ( 10 ) I'm In Love Again - Fats Domino
11 ( 17 ) It Only Hurts For A Little While - Ames Brothers 12 ( 18 ) Port Au Prince - Winifred Atwell And Frank Chacksfield 13 ( 9 ) In A Little Spanish Town - Bing Crosby (#7) 14 ( 8 ) Man With The Golden Arm - Richard Maltby (#4) 15 ( 16 ) The Church Bells May Ring - Diamonds

Dave King completes a 6th week at #1, having replaced Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" which was also 6 weeks at #1. Having seen what is coming up the turnover of number ones will be somewhat faster soon. It is not obvious though if there will be a new #1 next chart but 7 week number ones are fairly rare.

2 June 1956:
1 ( 1 ) You Can't Be True To Two - Dave King With The Keynotes < 7th week at #1 > 2 ( 3 ) Too Young To Go Steady - Nat King Cole 3 ( 2 ) Standing On The Corner - Four Lads (#2[2]) 4 ( 8 ) Out Of Town - Max Bygraves 5 ( 9 ) Graduation Day - Rover Boys
6 ( -- ) On The Street Where You Live - Vic Damone 7 ( 4 ) Mountain Greenery - Mel Tormé (#4) 8 ( 6 ) Mr Wonderful - Peggy Lee (#6) 9 ( 7 ) Hell Hath No Fury - Frankie Laine (#7) 10 ( 5 ) Ain't Misbehavin' - Johnnie Ray (#2[2])
11 ( 11 ) It Only Hurts For A Little While - Ames Brothers 12 ( 12 ) Port Au Prince - Winifred Atwell And Frank Chacksfield 13 ( 10 ) I'm In Love Again - Fats Domino (#10) 14 ( -- ) Delilah Jones - McGuire Sisters 15 ( 20 ) I Want You I Need You I Love You - Elvis Presley
16 ( -- ) Transfusion - Nervous Norvus 17 ( 15 ) The Church Bells May Ring - Diamonds (#15) 18 ( 18 ) Walk Hand In Hand - Tony Martin 19 ( 13 ) In A Little Spanish Town - Bing Crosby (#7) 20 ( 25 ) The Saints Rock 'N' Roll - Bill Haley And His Comets
21 ( 16 ) The Wayward Wind - Gogi Grant (#14) 22 ( 14 ) Man With The Golden Arm - Richard Maltby (#4) 23 ( -- ) Born To Be With You - Chordettes 24 ( 17 ) Lost John - Lonnie Donegan (#13) 25 ( 19 ) Can You Find It In Your Heart - Tony Bennett (#15)
-- ( 21 ) In A Persian Market - Sammy Davis Jr (#7) -- ( 22 ) Long Tall Sally - Little Richard (#2[1]) -- ( 23 ) I Want You To Be My Girl - Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers (#20) -- ( 24 ) The Happy Whistler - Don Robertson (#13)
In the end none of the challengers were simply close enough and Dave King gets a 7th week at #1. Possibly Vic Damone will take over next week but there are some big ones coming up.
Perhaps if I'd known what was coming I'd have let Julius LaRosa have a 2nd week at #1 and made Elvis wait a week, then he and Dave King could both have been #1 for 6 weeks. Or possibly Heartbreak Hotel could have grabbed the 7th week.
In any case the way things are, it shares the 7-week #1 status with a handful of classic songs like "Like A Rolling Stone", "Question" and "American Pie", the only 3 singles in the 1960-72 retro era (so far) to manage it.

-- ( 22 ) Man With The Golden Arm - Richard Maltby (#4) -- ( 24 ) Lost John - Lonnie Donegan (#13) -- ( 25 ) Can You Find It In Your Heart - Tony Bennett (#15)
We finally have a new number one, from the musical My Fair Lady which is now on Broadway (the film version will have to wait a few years). Perry Como's waltz gets the highest new entry but there's a massive song entering next week.

The chart is starting to "move" now - 6 new entries this week, one that crashes in at quite a high position. No chart being posted for 1972 today as I have no more scored-up playlists for that year, nor this one now, so both are on 16th of a month for now. Elvis Presley appears in both charts.

1956 in sport:
Manchester United won the football league with Blackpool second. Manchester United did however lose away 3-0 at Charlton Athletic (who finished 14th, and Man U did win 5-1 at Old Trafford). The FA Cup was won by Manchester City beating Birmingham City 3-1 in the final.
Real Madrid won the European Cup beating Reims 4-3 in the final. No English team took part. Chelsea were last season's champions but the Football League didn't let them enter... They'd have to wait a while to get another chance... Note: this was the first ever year for this competition.
Tennis:
In the 1956 Wimbledon Championships – Men's Singles, Lew Hoad defeated Ken Rosewall in the final, 6–2, 4–6, 7–5, 6–4
I'll fill in more later.

Doris Day gets her classic to #1. Out of interest can you (without looking at earlier charts) recall how many weeks Dave King's big number one was in the chart?

11 ( 9 ) Sweet Old-Fashioned Girl - Teresa Brewer (#8) 12 ( 8 ) More - Perry Como (#2[1]) 13 ( 16 ) Railroad Bill - Lonnie Donegan 14 ( 12 ) Rich Man Poor Man - Jimmy Young (#11) 15 ( 14 ) My Prayer - Platters (#14)
16 ( -- ) Left Bank - Winifred Atwell 17 ( 11 ) Glendora - Perry Como (#6) 18 ( 23 ) Bad Penny Blues Humphrey Lyttelton Band 19 ( -- ) Soft Summer Breeze - Eddie Heywood 20 ( 24 ) That's All There Is To That Nat King Cole
21 ( 15 ) Tiger Rag - Louis Armstrong (#10) 22 ( 18 ) Serenade - Slim Whitman (#16) 23 ( 19 ) The Carousel Waltz - Ray Martin (#15) 24 ( 21 ) Treasure Of Love - Clyde McPhatter (#19) 25 ( 17 ) On The Street Where You Live - Vic Damone (#1[2])
-- ( 20 ) My Blue Heaven - Fats Domino (#4) -- ( 22 ) Delilah Jones - McGuire Sisters (#8) -- ( 25 ) Born To Be With You - Chordettes (#15)
Elvis Presley gets the highest entry with "Hound Dog", but he'll have to chase Doris Day off the top to get the coveted spot. I think he's more likely to succeed with the flip-side "Don't Be Cruel" which in the USA was a far bigger hit. That will be along in a couple of weeks.

No surprise to you what week's 2 new entries are, and that Jerry Vale's song was later a hit for Ray Charles reaching #11 in my chart in 1962.

-- ( 22 ) Glendora - Perry Como (#6) -- ( 25 ) Tiger Rag - Louis Armstrong (#10)
As one Elvis song gets stuck at #2 he'll have 2 bites at the cherry next week with Don't Be Cruel entering at #4. In the UK this was just a B-side. Bill Black was a member of his band and he released an instrumental version in 1960. In 1978 it finally became an Elvis hit of its own right reaching #24.
Song For A Summer Night is a beautiful instrumental track.

Elvis Presley is the first artist to top my chart twice.
There is a slow turnover of songs, but the newest playlist I have has a lot of brilliant songs in it.

Not sure whether to invite SheriffFatman now or later to comment on my highest entry, particularly if it ends up getting to #1, which would in my chart be a second #1 this year for Anne Shelton who topped the chart on the first 4 weeks of the year with "Arrivederci Darling". Lay Down Your Arms was in the Official chart her only #1 but if you look her up in the British Hits 1940-1952 you will see she had a #1 way back in 1943 with Lil Marlene, and was a wartime favourite like Vera Lynn. Ok the lyrics of this are mildly corny but not bad enough to be considered one of the worst 50 #1s of all time, particularly in a year that had some dull ballads hit the top. My new playlist by the way contains: Fat Domino's most famous song, a song made famous in my generation by Shakin' Stevens about a house-party he wasn't able to gain entry to, a ballad by Elvis that is a classic and Guy Mitchell also doing his most famous song. It covers a number of weeks so I can foresee 3 of them hitting the top.
