So my 1st choice song wins *sigh* didn't think it would, but love it, didn't predict it though I dont think. Assume Zombie nation would not do well here, but I love it, and so entered it as my 2nd choice. Nice job everyone, done ok with the bottom song I think, and obvs points for knowing Dandy Warhols would be in this

Black Box Recorder was a song I thought of entering, but never expected to actually see here - any other time it'd get top points, but the Muse song is even better (I actually bought the single at the time).
well done TheThorne for winning the 2000 time machine and thank you to Smokeyb for hosting.

This sets the tone nicely. A superb opening round in terms of variety and quality, and a nicely diverse set of songs at the top of the leader board. And an immaculate piece of hosting so far by smokeyb.
I said I was in it to win it, and after Round 1 I'm 6th. That could be the highest position I achieve on the leaders' list, or it could be a platform from which to ascend. Hard to say.

Black Box Recorder. I love the parent album. At the time it seemed quite different to much of what was being released. It now sounds ahead of its time. But I don't think any of the members ever produced a piece of music which was nearly so good.
Dandy Warhols. A thoroughly deserving winner, which bodes well for the rest of the competition, given it was far from being the biggest hit on offer. I saw them live in 2003, supporting David Bowie, and remember being a little disappointed. Like BBR, this was undoubtedly their career highpoint, by some distance.
Bloodhound Gang. I've always been troubled by this track. The music is nothing short of brilliant. An incredibly catchy piece of retro synth pop filled up with hooks. But the lyrics are so infantile that they always annoy me. (Yes, I know they are supposed to). I was in my 30s when this came out, not 13, and I really struggled to like it from the very first time I heard it. It has been crying out, ever since, for a re-recording by someone else, with brand new lyrics. The childishness dropped it from first to fourth in my points.

kd Lang was one of the few tracks in this set that I hadn’t heard before. I gave it its fair few listens before voting, but it’s appeal completely passed me by. Just seemed bland and repetitive, musical wallpaper,
I entered the Bloodhound Gang expecting it to be a Marmite track and so it transpired. Anything that combines lowbrow humour with wordplay and cultural references tends to get “two thumbs up” from me and this is a classic example. For those of you who liked it, I recommend ‘I Wish I Was Queer So I Could Get Chicks’ which has some brilliant lyrics.
I’d forgotten how good ‘The Facts Of Life’ was. On listening through the entries, it was easily the standout and well-deserved top scorer even above my own entry. Such a shame original innovative songs like this just don’t reach the top 40 nowadays!
