7 April 1973:
1 ( 7 ) Walk On The Wild Side - Lou Reed < 1st #1 > 2 ( 1 ) 20th Century Boy - T Rex (#1[2]) 3 ( 2 ) Get Down - Gilbert O'Sullivan (#2[1]) 4 ( 6 ) I Am A Clown - David Cassidy 5 ( 5 ) Power To All Our Friends - Cliff Richard 6 ( 13 ) You Are The Sunshine Of My Life - Stevie Wonder 7 ( 3 ) Cum On Feel The Noize - Slade (#1[2]) 8 ( -- ) Reelin' In The Years - Steely Dan 9 ( 4 ) Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree - Dawn (#3) 10 ( 16 ) Stuck In The Middle With You - Stealers Wheel

-- ( -- ) Nevertheless (I'm In Love With You) - Eve Graham & The New Seekers
Lou Reed climbs to #1. 34 years later he will feature on an NM #2 hit for The Killers.
The highest new entry is epic rock by Steely Dan, which surprisingly wasn't a top 10 hit in the USA and didn't chart at all here. One of those you assumed was a bigger hit than it was.
Gary Glitter got to #1 last year with "Rock N Roll" but this is actually my favourite of all his songs yet it is highly unlikely to reach #1, showing how strong the chart is right now compared to then.
The next playlist after this one (21 April to 11 May) is rather weak actually, containing only 2 or 3 great songs and some very poor stuff. Of course the strongest is on the first week of that list.

A classic song enters at #6 this week, but on the whole the standard is about to start to drop, in particular with regard to the number of classics appearing.

The first number one for Wizzard - only the second hit for that name after Ball Park Incident. However Roy Wood had a #1 in 1967 as part of The Move with Flowers In The Rain.
And now he's half taken on the Phil Spector sound and combined it with Glam Rock to produce "See My Baby Jive".
A number of years ago I created a retro playlist from 1973 based mostly on the UK chart that week and that song was #1, and that was when I was still with Carol. When this song appeared at #1 she was surprised that a Christmas-sounding song was #1 in the middle of the year. Of course Wizzard would go on to make one of the definitive Christmas songs and so many others copy that sound as well as what Spector did that it did make it sound a bit like a Christmas song.
We know that Swedish band Abba, wanting to sound a bit more contemporary for Eurovision 1974, based Waterloo on this song.
Go forward to early 1992 and as well as cover of the song at #30 this week we also had a cover of this week's highest new entry. Actually on its second week that cover climbed from #12 to #4 whilst Shakespears Sister climbed #10 to #6 with "Stay". But the following week it stalled at #4 whilst Stay climbed to #2 and would subsequently go on to spend 8 weeks at the top of the chart. The two covers from this chart were in the top 10 on the same week in 1992.

Sweet get the highest entry with Hell Raiser, whilst Medicine Head couldn't do basic maths (I never quite got it as an 8-year-old) but the proper version of the song which isn't on Spotify is still musically good...

When I score up the playlists now, before I do the full ranking I assign them 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 as "tiers" of whether they are top songs etc. so a tier 1 is a top song. Last week had two tier-1 entries, this week does not have any as Raspberries were in tier 2.

The highest new entry is a song that was a UK #1 for 10cc whilst the song it replaced on top enters much lower at #32. Rubber Bullets is about the handling of a prison riot though I never quite got it as it seemed they were having a party, Jailhouse Rock style, albeit one that got a bit out of hand.
Never really liked Can The Can that much and thought Suzi Quatro's voice rather piercing and screechy on it.

-- ( -- ) Close Your Eyes - Edward Bear
10cc get their first NM #1.
The highest new entry is the Doobie Brothers song that wasn't a UK hit until about 20 years later. J Geils Band get a new entry about 9 years before their big hit. Peters And Lee enter now and like Suzi Quatro, not one of the best UK #1s of 1973 but not so bad it fails to chart at all. (So far only one UK #1 of 1973 has not reached this chart).

The Beatles topped my chart 15 times. Paul McCartney reached #1 in 1971 with "Another Day", but later formed Wings. "C-Moon" reached #5 for them at Christmas time with "Hi Hi Hi" charting separately and getting to #7 but their last single "My Love" only reached #14. The new single is a Bond theme.

I have credited this as the first number one for Wings because indeed it is, and for me Wings is not simply Paul McCartney, even when it credits "Paul McCartney & Wings" as indeed this song did. In any case I'm not denying Paul McCartney is a significant part of this, and he wrote and sang on it, thus giving him a second number one outside of the Beatles, the same number John Lennon has had at this point. George Harrison has not had one on this chart, and falls from #3 to #4 this week.
This is getting totally classic again and we have more to come, the #1, the outgoing #1, the highest entry and the second highest entry.

A lot of songs this week but notably we have "Life On Mars" entering, but to get to the top it will have to displace "Money" by Pink Floyd. Last year "Starman" had to wait until its 3rd week to top the chart due to "Layla" doing a similar thing. With "Live And Let Die" being held to 2 weeks and "Yesterday Once More" and "Smoke On The Water" stalling at #2 and #3 it shows just how strong this chart is right now.
Albert Hammond gets the next highest ehtry and Slade who have topped this chart with 2 of their last 3 singles only get the 3rd entry - in the UK they entered at #1 with this song.
The O'Jays fail to enter at all - their last single "Love Train" peaked at #3 and "Back Stabbers" was also a top 10 hit. Stylistics also fail to chart. "Stone In Love With You" reached the top 5 for them. (Song title was also a hit for the New Vaudeville Band in 1967 and that is the only UK top 10 hit among the songs of this title, but in my chart it peaked at #15, the lowest of their singles. Later Siouxsie & The Banshees would have a hit also of that title).

We have reached that halfway point in the year where I run through the sporting winners. FootballAs usual I start with the English top division where Liverpool won the title with Arsenal second. Sunderland actually managed to win at Wembley, that being in the FA Cup final where they beat the "mighty" Leeds United 1-0 - actually they were quite mighty back then but Sunderland only finished 6th in the second division so quite a shock. In the league cup Tottenham Hotspur beat Norwich City in the final also 1-0. In Scotland Celtic won the league with Rangers second but Rangers beat Celtic 3-2 in the Scottish Cup Final whilst Hibernian with the Scottish League Cup also by beating Celtic, by a 2-1 scoreline. In the European Cup Ajax beat Juventus 1-0. AC Milan won the European Cup-Winners Cup beating Leeds United 1-0 in the final, so Leeds lost two cup-finals. Liverpool won the UEFA Cup final 3-2 against Borussia MönchengladbachAmerican FootballIn the Superbowl, Miami Dolphins beat Washington Redskins 14-7
Baseball
In the world series the Oakland Athletics beat the New York Mets by 4 games to 3.
Tennis
In the men's US Open championship John Newcombe beat Jan Kodes 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 .
however Jan Kodes did win at Wimbledon beating Alex Metreveli 6-1, 9-8, 6-3
In the women's US Open Margaret Court beat Evonne Goolagong 7-6, 5-7, 6-2 whilst at Wimbledon Billie Jean King beat Chris Evert 6-0, 7-5.
Note that in Wimbledon tie-breaks in the men's happened at 8-8 and at the US Open in the women's at 6-6 (as is normal now) but not sure if it was the tournament or the gender that decided when tie-breaks were played. Snooker
Ray Reardon won against Eddie Charlton. A long match, best of 75, that finished 38-32.
By this time it is notable that both Dennis Taylor and Cliff Thorburn were taking part, they met in the first round in fact with Thorburn winning 9-8, and he narrowly lost to Rex Williams in the next round.

David Bowie can't quite get to number one just yet, Pink Floyd have bagged another week. Diana Ross gets the highest new entry with a song co-written by Michael Masser who would later write songs with Gerry Goffin (and Whitney Houston would record a couple of those). Elton John goes heavy rock - well heavy for him anyway.

Not a great week for new entries. My playlist had some great songs but all the ones from this week finished right near the bottom. Essentially I grade songs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Anything that gets a 5 doesn't normally make the chart and anything that gets a 4 may scrape in if lucky. This one had 4 songs, two 4s and two 5s. 3 of them got in anyway. By rights Johnnie Taylor which got a 5 should drop out next week after one week at #40.

On this chart Bobby Goldsboro has had a string of hits, although "Honey" reaching #4 in 1968 has been his biggest but a new entry at #6 suggests it may climb higher than that and will challenge David Bowie for #1 given that song has already clocked up 4 weeks on top.

A 5th week at #1 for David Bowie, he's had 3 number ones and they have stayed on top 5, 6 and now 5 weeks, but Bobby Goldsboro gets his biggest hit to date and could prevent David Bowie from making it 6 this time.
Not much excitement on the new entry front this week but there are better songs to come in the next few weeks. A pile of classics, actually.
