Prince also gets two songs on the countdown, although he’s generally used to much higher placings. Sign O’ The Times peaked at number 3 on the weekly chart and is our 62nd biggest song of the year. U Got The Look achieved a lower weekly peak at number 4, but by accumulating 64 more points, it falls just one place short of the half way point in the countdown.

OK into the Top 50 now.... 1986 was a massive year for Peter Gabriel. Sledgehammer was our biggest song of the year, and his duet with Kate Bush helped propel him to the 8th biggest act of the year. A slight downturn in fortune this year, Big Time got to number five on our weekly chart but can only reach number 49 on this listing.
Bananarama continue their successful partnership with Stock, Aitken and Waterman. Venus was one of the Top 20 songs of last year, and whilst Love In The First Degree is unable to emulate the success of their previous hit, they manage a second song on this list, with I Heard A Rumour also featuring at number 72.
Terence Trent D’Arby has enjoyed a successful debut on both the Official Chart and the Retro-Chart. Wishing Well was his biggest song on the Official Chart, however we awarded significantly more points to its predecessor, If You Let Me Stay, which peaked at number 2 in April and reaches number 43 on this listing.

As we move into the Top 40 we see the number one singles appearing. It’s been a fantastic year for U2, with three singles from The Joshua Tree all making the Top Two, it’s their number one single, Where The Streets Have No Name, that’s placed lowest on the list at number 38. The other two, With or Without You and I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For are within 10 places of each other.
Alexander O’Neal at number 27 with Criticize is just one of five songs this year that featured on every individual chart.
Another act enjoying a successful debut is Wet Wet Wet. Wishing I Was Lucky wound up at number 28 on the countdown, peaking at number 4 on the weekly chart. Follow-up single, Sweet Little Mystery, managed a number six peak, ending up at number 91 on this list. With current hit, Angel Eyes, still climbing the chart, the Wets could be a band to look out for next year too.

A great year for Alison Moyet, with two big singles from Raindancing, including the huge number one song, Is This Love, she manages to place two songs in the Top 30 of the year.
And the number one song of the year on the Official Chart, Never Gonna Give You Up, can only manage a number 21 placing on our chart, having spent a couple of weeks at number three in the summer.
