The highest new entry by Alma Cogan is originally from a Mexican tune Cielito Lindo or whatever but it sounds to me like the tune from the football chant we used to sing about some team being magic or tragic or a particular person being a w**ker.

-- ( 22 ) I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine - Elvis Presley (#3) -- ( 23 ) That's Right - Deep River Boys (#14) -- ( 24 ) Rudy's Rock - Bill Haley And His Comets (#5)
The highest entry is Fats Domino's original version of "Ain't That A Shame" which was a hit cover version for Pat Boone in 1955, and appeared on the first chart here.
That enters above Guy Mitchell whose last two singles both reached #1 but is unlikely to get a hat trick now.
David Whitfield has released some awful songs up to now but he does manage to get in the chart this time. ("My Son John" is, in my opinion, probably the worst song I encountered in 1956).

Ain't That A Shame was written by Fats Domino with Dave Bartholomew, and was released in 1955 with Pat Boone recording a commercially more successful cover, but having found chart success in the UK now his version has re-issued and became a hit in 1957.
Bill Haley & His Comets continue to churn out more rock 'n' roll hits. They had a lot more hits than many people will remember.

1 ( 1 ) Ain't That A Shame - Fats Domino < 3rd week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) Rock The Joint - Bill Haley & His Comets 3 ( 4 ) Don't Knock The Rock - Bill Haley & His Comets 4 ( 8 ) Butterfly - Andy Williams 5 ( -- ) Party Doll - Buddy Knox

-- ( 23 ) Don't Forbid Me - Pat Boone (#7) -- ( 24 ) Jim Dandy - LaVern Baker (#17) -- ( 25 ) All Of You - Sammy Davis Jr (#8)
A new entry by Buddy Knox threatens to break into the top where Fats Domino is keeping two Bill Haley songs at bay. In the UK "Party Doll" only scraped in at #29 and was covered by The Jets in 1984 but not a success for them either. (In the UK, Party Doll and Yes Tonight Josephine were both in the chart at the same time in 1957 but not yet, and the latter reached #1. The Jets also had a bigger hit with it, so we'll have to see how Johnnie Ray gets on here). In the US "Party Doll" by Buddy Knox peaked at #2 (behind Butterfly by Andy Williams).

-- ( 25 ) Blue Monday - Fats Domino (#4)
Only one entry but at the top end a change as Buddy Knox climbs to #1. His 1961 single "Lovey Dovey" reached #23 in my chart, and the lyrics were sampled by Steve Miller for "The Joker". In 1962 he reached #18 in my chart with "She's Gone". He died in 1999 of lung cancer at the age of 65. Let's see what the rest of the 50s has in store for him.

The highest new entry this week is a new hit for Harry Belafonte. Technically his music is called "Mento" and reggae was partly derived from it, though I'd just call it reggae myself, though it has a more calypso feel to it. The song seems to go under 2 different titles, both of which are used.

A doo-wop number one, the kind of thing Showaddywaddy later made famous, replacing the rock-a-billy Party Doll on top with calypso at #3 and country music at #4. Eddie Cochran makes his debut. That Dean Martin song though - haven't I heard it before somewhere it sounds familiar... oh wait a moment this is "Guaglione"... and this actually pre-dates the Perez Prado version which was 1958, but the original was a vocal version in Italian (not sure if Marino Marini is actually the original but is the most famous Italian recording of the song).

After one week the Diamonds are replaced on top by Harry Belafonte, but Elvis Presley enters at #4 with All Shook Up which may well shake up the chart by hitting the top next week.
Alma Cogan may well end up with yet another number 2 with her version of a song from Damn Yankees. This would be more of bad timing than anything else, I think she was quite lucky to have got as high as #2 with Willie Can and You Me & Us, the new one is far better than either of those.

6 April 1957:
1 ( 4 ) All Shook Up - Elvis Presley < 3rd #1 > 2 ( 1 ) Mama Look At Bubu - Harry Belafonte (#1[1]) 3 ( 6 ) Whatever Lola Wants - Alma Cogan 4 ( 2 ) Little Darlin' - Diamonds (#1[1]) 5 ( 7 ) Sittin' In The Balcony - Eddie Cochran
6 ( 3 ) Party Doll - Buddy Knox (#1[3]) 7 ( 5 ) Walkin' After Midnight - Patsy Cline (#4) 8 ( -- ) Rock-A-Billy - Guy Mitchell 9 ( -- ) Heart - Max Bygraves 10 ( 8 ) I'm Walking - Fats Domino (#7)
11 ( 19 ) Mangos - Rosemary Clooney 12 ( 11 ) Why Baby Why - Pat Boone (#9) 13 ( 9 ) Butterfly - Andy Williams (#3) 14 ( 17 ) The Man Who Plays The Mandolino - Dean Martin 15 ( 10 ) I'm Stickin' With You - Jimmy Bowen & The Rhythm Orchids (#5)
16 ( 15 ) Ninety Nine Ways - Tab Hunter (#15) 17 ( 13 ) The Girl Can't Help It - Little Richard (#12) 18 ( 22 ) I'm Not A Juvenile Delinquent - Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers 19 ( 12 ) Come Go With Me - Dell Vikings (#10) 20 ( 16 ) I'm Sorry - Platters (#14)
21 ( 14 ) She's Got It - Little Richard (#8) 22 ( -- ) Cumberland Gap - Lonnie Donegan 23 ( 20 ) The Wisdom Of A Fool - Norman Wisdom (#19) 24 ( 18 ) Gone - Ferlin Husky (#15) 25 ( -- ) I'll Find You - David Whitfield
-- ( 21 ) Ain't That A Shame - Fats Domino (#1[3]) -- ( 23 ) Mystery Train - Elvis Presley (#8) -- ( 24 ) Can I Steal A Little Love - Frank Sinatra (#6) -- ( 25 ) Round And Round - Perry Como (#15)
Elvis Presley gets his 3rd #1 on this chart but it will be his first #1. The highest new entry by Guy Mitchell is called Rock-A-Billy and clearly he's trying to embrace rock 'n' roll and even be part of it. He has been one of the most successful singers of the 1950s, but his time at the top is nearly up as Elvis is clearly stealing his crown. If we count the #1s prior to the chart era Guy Mitchell has had 8, and I don't even know who else may have matched his 1950s success.
The second entry by Max Bygraves, like the Alma Cogan song in the chart, is from the musical Damn Yankees.
Lower down is a song that gave Lonnie Donegan a UK #1. In my chart Max Bygraves and Lonnie Donegan had consecutive number ones in 1960.

I actually had a whole scored-up playlist I didn't notice...

6 ( 3 ) Mama Look At Bubu - Harry Belafonte (#1[1]) 7 ( 12 ) Dark Moon - Bonnie Guitar 8 ( -- ) When I Fall In Love - Nat King Cole 9 ( 13 ) Freight Train - Charles McDevitt Skiffle Group 10 ( 6 ) Sittin' In The Balcony - Eddie Cochran (#5)
11 ( 9 ) Mangos - Rosemary Clooney (#9) 12 ( 17 ) So Rare - Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra 13 ( -- ) A White Sport Coat (And A Pink Carnation) - Marty Robbins 14 ( 8 ) Little Darlin' - Diamonds (#1[1]) 15 ( 20 ) Baby Baby - Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers
16 ( 10 ) Walkin' After Midnight - Patsy Cline (#4) 17 ( -- ) Love Is A Golden Ring - Frankie Laine 18 ( 14 ) The Man Who Plays The Mandolino - Dean Martin (#14) 19 ( 18 ) Cumberland Gap - Lonnie Donegan (#18) 20 ( 11 ) Party Doll - Buddy Knox (#1[3])
21 ( 16 ) Why Baby Why - Pat Boone (#9) 22 ( 15 ) I'm Walking - Fats Domino (#7) 23 ( 19 ) I'm Not A Juvenile Delinquent - Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers (#18) 24 ( 23 ) I'll Find You - David Whitfield (#23) 25 ( -- ) Empty Arms - Teresa Brewer

-- ( -- ) Pledge Of Love - Ken Copeland
Next week has no new songs so Ken Copeland will probably be used for one entry. School Day by Chuck Berry has the same tune as No Particular Place To Go.
Nat King Cole's "When I Fall In Love" appeared briefly in my chart at the end of 1987 but its real place in the charts is here...

4 May 1957:
1 ( 1 ) All Shook Up - Elvis Presley < 5th week at #1 > 2 ( 4 ) When I Fall In Love - Nat King Cole 3 ( 2 ) Whatever Lola Wants - Alma Cogan (#2[3]) 4 ( 3 ) School Day - Chuck Berry (#3) 5 ( 8 ) A White Sport Coat (And A Pink Carnation) - Marty Robbins

11 ( 9 ) Freight Train - Charles McDevitt Skiffle Group (#9) 12 ( 7 ) Heart - Max Bygraves (#5) 13 ( 16 ) Empty Arms - Teresa Brewer 14 ( 13 ) Baby Baby - Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers (#13) 15 ( -- ) Love Letters In The Sand - Pat Boone
16 ( 21 ) Pledge Of Love - Ken Copeland 17 ( 11 ) Mama Look At Bubu - Harry Belafonte (#1[1]) 18 ( 14 ) Mangos - Rosemary Clooney (#9) 19 ( 18 ) Cumberland Gap - Lonnie Donegan (#18) 20 ( 17 ) Little Darlin' - Diamonds (#1[1])
21 ( 15 ) Sittin' In The Balcony - Eddie Cochran (#5) 22 ( 19 ) The Man Who Plays The Mandolino - Dean Martin (#14) 23 ( -- ) Butterfingers - Tommy Steele 24 ( 20 ) Walkin' After Midnight - Patsy Cline (#4) 25 ( 22 ) Party Doll - Buddy Knox (#1[3])
-- ( 23 ) Why Baby Why - Pat Boone (#9) -- ( 24 ) I'm Not A Juvenile Delinquent - Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers (#18) -- ( 25 ) I'm Walking - Fats Domino (#7)
Elvis Presley remains at #1 a 5th week and now Nat King Cole moves up to #2 to possibly challenge Elvis at the top next week with a song you saw in my retro chart of 1987 too, and even if it had been new at the time it wouldn't have got to #1 so I guess 1987 the music was far superior or it is just a different era where Nat King Cole is less relevant?
Yes Tonight Josephine wasn't totally irrelevant in 1981, it was a hit for the Jets then, albeit it didn't go top 20 but was a bigger hit for them than "Party Doll" later but that song was a #1 a couple of months ago and is still just about in the chart. Johnnie Ray has twice peaked at #2 and "Just Walkin' In The Rain" was the biggest hit not to reach #1 in 1956 so maybe his luck will be in this time.

The classic ballad by Nat King Cole pushes Elvis off the top of the charts. The Rick Astley cover in 1987 had a short life due to the return of this version. And my 1973 will soon encounter the Donny Osmond version, except it won't, it will be totally omitted from the playlist. Donny Osmond's cover makes Rick Astley sound like a classic.

Nat King Cole's definitive ballad gets a second week on top so Johnnie Ray for now has reached #2 for the 3rd time, but can he succeed next week, whilst Teresa Brewer had a #1 at the end of last year and she has 2 singles in the chart.
The highest entry is an uptempo swing song by Pat Boone from a 1957 film of the same name.
