25 May 1957:
1 ( 1 ) When I Fall In Love - Nat King Cole < 3rd week at #1 > 2 ( 3 ) Nora Malone - Teresa Brewer 3 ( 2 ) Yes Tonight Josephine - Johnnie Ray (#2[1]) 4 ( -- ) Bye Bye Love - Everly Brothers 5 ( 9 ) Bernardine - Pat Boone
6 ( 7 ) Wonderful Wonderful - Johnny Mathis 7 ( 6 ) Love Letters In The Sand - Pat Boone (#6) 8 ( 11 ) Searchin' - Coasters 9 ( 5 ) A White Sport Coat (And A Pink Carnation) - Marty Robbins (#4) 10 ( 4 ) All Shook Up - Elvis Presley (#1[5])
11 ( -- ) Valley Of Tears - Fats Domino 12 ( 14 ) Chapel Of The Roses - Malcolm Vaughan 13 ( 19 ) I Just Don't Know - Four Lads 14 ( 8 ) Whatever Lola Wants - Alma Cogan (#2[3]) 15 ( 20 ) He's Mine - Platters
16 ( 21 ) Young Blood - Coasters 17 ( 10 ) School Day - Chuck Berry (#3) 18 ( -- ) Around The World - Bing Crosby 19 ( 13 ) So Rare - Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra (#9) 20 ( 12 ) Dark Moon - Bonnie Guitar (#6)
21 ( 24 ) A Teenager's Romance - Ricky Nelson 22 ( -- ) Start Movin' (In My Direction) - Sal Mineo 23 ( 18 ) Butterfingers - Tommy Steele (#18) 24 ( 16 ) Empty Arms - Teresa Brewer (#13) 25 ( 15 ) Love Is A Golden Ring - Frankie Laine (#10)
-- ( 17 ) Pledge Of Love - Ken Copeland (#15) -- ( 22 ) Rock-A-Billy - Guy Mitchell (#4) -- ( 23 ) Four Walls - Jim Reeves -- ( 25 ) Baby Baby - Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers (#13)
-- ( -- ) We Will Make Love - Russ Hamilton -- ( -- ) It's Not For Me To Say - Johnny Mathis
The highest new entry is a classic and the debut for the Everly Brothers. That Russ Hamilton didn't enter the chart - he actually was a 3 in my rating, I didn't have many 4s. Johnny Mathis is in the chart but this one was a 5 for me so didn't expect to chart.
Strange how things are though, "Love Letters In The Sand" was a US #1 and UK #2 for Pat Boone, but "Bernadine" was only #23 in the USA and didn't chart at all in the UK, yet that is a bigger hit on my chart, with Love Letters sliding a place this week.

-- ( -- ) Goin' Steady - Tommy Sands
As the Everly Brothers get a 3rd week at #1, the highest new entry is by Harry Belafonte. He's already reached #1 twice this year and so with one of his signature songs it is no surprise really that he gets a very high entry.
Perry Como's song is one of his best so far, and also the only song this year so far not on Spotify. I have no idea why, all his others are there, as are all the other hits of 1957 I have encountered so far.
Lots of rock 'n' roll songs sound similar, but "Fabulous" by Charlie Gracie sounds so much like "Don't Be Cruel" the publishers actually sued. "Don't Be Cruel" wasn't actually a UK hit. In the USA it was Elvis's biggest ever hit as far as week at #1 are concerned. In my chart it was one of his three #1s so far.

This post has reached halfway through the year which means I put a sporting winners post in here.
But I want to post another chart now so I'll save this post for editing later.
You already know that Manchester United won the league though in 1957 because it's famous that they were in the European Cup the following year.
Tottenham Hotspur were 2nd but were a whole 8 points behind and there were only 2 points for a win.
Unfortunately Charlton Athletic finished bottom of the first division and were relegated. End of an era... but they will bounce back. And again I hope.

-- ( 24 ) When I Fall In Love - Nat King Cole (#1[3]) -- ( 25 ) Over The Mountain Across The Sea - Johnnie And Joe (#22)
Elvis gets his 4th number one hotly pursued by Leroy Anderson who climbs up to #2. His track is an instrumental he wrote himself and first recorded in 1954 but it has just been picked up and released in the UK. It only reached about #24 but is a beautiful track with piano and strings.
Nat King Cole has one of only 2 new entries to replace his own song in the chart, whilst Larry Williams "Short Fat Fannie" is a slight novelty song, with lyrics quoting a bunch of other song titles along the way.

Actually Leroy Anderson nearly beat Elvis last week, this time it was never in doubt. Just one of the most beautiful instrumentals.
Only one new entry but there are a handful due in next week. Fats Domino gets the entry and is also the one to leave.

3 entries due 20th July, 3 on 27 July and 5 on 3 August. I think the next #1 will come from 3 August week of entries. That would be the week Leroy Anderson spends its 4th week at #1 and so we'll see how long it stays.

20 July 1957:
1 ( 1 ) Forgotten Dreams - Leroy Anderson < 2nd week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear - Elvis Presley (#1[1]) 3 ( 3 ) Travellin' Home - Vera Lynn 4 ( 5 ) When Rock N Roll Came To Trinidad - Nat King Cole 5 ( 9 ) It's You I Love - Fats Domino
6 ( 6 ) Fire Down Below - Jeri Southern 7 ( 4 ) Bye Bye Love - Everly Brothers (#1[5]) 8 ( 8 ) Lucille - Little Richard 9 ( 10 ) Send For Me - Nat King Cole 10 ( -- ) Tammy - Debbie Reynolds
11 ( 7 ) Island In The Sun - Harry Belafonte (#2[2]) 12 ( 15 ) Short Fat Fannie - Larry Williams 13 ( 16 ) I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter - Billy Williams 14 ( 14 ) Jenny Jenny - Little Richard 15 ( 11 ) Girl With The Golden Braids - Perry Como (#4)
16 ( 13 ) Fabulous - Charlie Gracie (#8) 17 ( 12 ) Old Cape Cod - Patti Page (#2[1]) 18 ( -- ) Whispering Bells - Del-Vikings 19 ( 20 ) C.C. Rider - Chuck Willis (#20) 20 ( 17 ) With All My Heart - Jodie Sands (#13)
21 ( 18 ) Greenback Dollar - Charles McDevitt Skiffle Group (#14) 22 ( -- ) Star Dust - Billy Ward & His Dominoes 23 ( 19 ) Bernardine - Pat Boone (#2[1]) 24 ( 21 ) I Like Your Kind Of Love - Andy Williams (#5) 25 ( 22 ) Putting On The Style - Lonnie Donegan (#9)
-- ( 23 ) Talkin' To The Blues - Jim Lowe (#9) -- ( 24 ) Rock Your Baby To Sleep - Buddy Knox (#17) -- ( 25 ) We Will Make Love - Russ Hamilton (#15)
Debbie Reynolds gets the highest entry. As a child I knew her best as the lead actress in Singing In The Rain. She married Eddie Fisher and was the mother of Carrie Fisher and died one day after her daughter in that horrible week at the end of 2016 when Rick Parfitt and George Michael also both died. Debbie Reynolds herself lived to 84 whilst Carrie was 60 when she died and therefore a baby / toddler at the time of this hit.
Leroy Anderson remains on top. This is one of the surprise number ones of the year but then at the start of 1961 there was a surprise number one when Sarah Vaughan topped the chart with Serenata and Leroy Anderson co-wrote that too. (He wrote the music, someone else wrote the lyrics). His most famous composition is "Sleigh Ride" a song that the Ronettes recorded and finally reached the top 40 (#34) in the UK with at Christmas last year. He also wrote that Typewriter tune that Simon Bates used to use on one of his radio one features.
The song that is #1 now has been used on TV and was used in a commercial around 2006 so it may be familiar to you.

27 July 1957:
1 ( 1 ) Forgotten Dreams - Leroy Anderson < 3rd week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear - Elvis Presley (#1[1]) 3 ( 5 ) It's You I Love - Fats Domino 4 ( 3 ) Travellin' Home - Vera Lynn (#3) 5 ( 4 ) When Rock N Roll Came To Trinidad - Nat King Cole (#4)
6 ( 10 ) Tammy - Debbie Reynolds 7 ( -- ) White Silver Sands - Don Rondo 8 ( 6 ) Fire Down Below - Jeri Southern (#6) 9 ( 8 ) Lucille - Little Richard (#8) 10 ( 9 ) Send For Me - Nat King Cole (#9)
11 ( 12 ) Short Fat Fannie - Larry Williams 12 ( 18 ) Whispering Bells - Del-Vikings 13 ( 7 ) Bye Bye Love - Everly Brothers (#1[5]) 14 ( 13 ) I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter - Billy Williams (#13) 15 ( -- ) In The Middle Of A Dark Dark Night - Guy Mitchell
16 ( 14 ) Jenny Jenny - Little Richard (#14) 17 ( -- ) Last Train To San Fernando - Johnny Duncan & The Blue Grass Boys 18 ( 22 ) Star Dust - Billy Ward & His Dominoes 19 ( 11 ) Island In The Sun - Harry Belafonte (#2[2]) 20 ( 19 ) C.C. Rider - Chuck Willis (#20)
21 ( 16 ) Fabulous - Charlie Gracie (#8) 22 ( 15 ) Girl With The Golden Braids - Perry Como (#4) 23 ( 17 ) Old Cape Cod - Patti Page (#2[1]) 24 ( 20 ) With All My Heart - Jodie Sands (#13) 25 ( 21 ) Greenback Dollar - Charles McDevitt Skiffle Group (#14)
-- ( 23 ) Bernardine - Pat Boone (#2[1]) -- ( 24 ) I Like Your Kind Of Love - Andy Williams (#5) -- ( 25 ) Putting On The Style - Lonnie Donegan (#9)
Don Rondo gets the highest new entry with much of what is above static. Guy Mitchell's fortunes started to fade at this point, his last single was a UK #1 but this missed the top 20 and apart from "Heartaches By The Number" which appeared in my first 1960 chart (but will re-compiled) he didn't have another significant hit.
Skiffle was very popular back then though and Johnny Duncan's single would reach #2 in the UK.

Paul Anka was born on 30 July 1941 so had his 16th birthday within the week and is 16 years and a few days at the point of this chart. In the UK the single took a bit longer to reach #1 but I believe he is still the youngest person ever to write and perform a UK #1 single, and a record he may well achieve in this chart too.
Leroy Anderson is 49 years old at the time of this chart. He did also write his own hit.
Between those there is a chance that Don Rondo could sneak in a week at the top as he climbs from #7 to #2 this week with White Silver Sands. It is an original song but he didn't write it - it was written by Charles 'Red' Matthews. Don Rondo had one previous hit "Two Different Worlds" which reached #17 in November 1956. So whether this gets to #1 or not, it's a far bigger hit for him.

As we still await our next #1, Jill Corey joins the battle getting the highest entry with what will be her only hit, which reached #18 in the US chart. She is still alive today (born 1935). So is Paul Anka actually. The other entry by the Four Coins got in despite being bottom of the current playlist, sounding rather too much like "The Great Pretender" for my liking.

I knew that "Diana" would reach #1, it was never really in doubt. I've had many younger singer-songwriters who have had big hits in my chart at a younger age but none of them have ever reached #1. I believe Paul Anka still holds this record in the UK chart nearly 63 years later.
I'm actualy finding that a lot more of the artists getting in the chart now are still alive. Paul Anka is - 78 now will be 79 in July. Whilst Buddy Holly would die in a plane crash less than 2 years later, Sonny Curtis and Jerry Allison from the Crickets are both still alive.
The Bobbettes were young girls and they wrote their own hit too which is quite impressive - about a school teacher they didn't like, but some of the lyrics had to be changed. They were 5 girls and showed "girl power" then long before the Spice Girls. Only one of them is still alive - one of them was sadly murdered in 1980. I mentioned that Jill Corey is also still alive, and so is Tommy Steele who has entered the chart this week as is Jimmie Rodgers, as well as Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard who both have singles in the chart. And of course Vera Lynn!

The Crickets climb to #2. In the UK chart Paul Anka stayed on top for 9 weeks but was replaced eventually but that song. Later Paul Anka wrote a song recorded by the lead singer Buddy Holly that was a #1 for him just after he died in the plane crash.

Only 2 entries this week, neither of whom are still alive. Buddy Knox died of lung cancer in 1999 and Ricky Nelson died in a plane crash at the end of 1985.
For the second time this year Buddy Knox has a single enter at #5 and the first time "Party Doll" then went on to climb to #1 the next week so he will be hoping to repeat this feat and join Harry Belafonte and Elvis Presley as artists to have two #1s this year.

Paul Anka falls after 5 weeks on top, the 4th single this year to spend exactly that many weeks on top, and those have been 4 of the last 6 number ones. Three number ones this year only spent a single week on top, one topped for 4 weeks and three for 3 weeks. No singles this year have spent exactly 2 weeks at number one so far.
Half of this weeks new entry artists are still alive - Gene Vincent died young but Johnny Mathis is still alive and two of the four Tune Weavers are.
