Everly Brothers grab the top spot with their classic but hot on their heels is the king of rock and roll with one of his classics and so we'll have to see how long they last. Elvis Presley even has a second entry this week.

12 October 1957:

-- ( -- ) My Dixie Darling - Lonnie Donegan
The Everly Brothers refuse to budge over this week but Elvis may prove too big a force next week. There are a lot of Everly Brothers vs Elvis Presley battles over the next few years. One will replace the other at #1 several times and Elvis already replaced the Everly Brothers earlier in the year. The tables will be turned in April 1960 when "Cathy's Clown" will replace "Stuck On You" but will have to wait an extra week at #2 to do so. In 1961 "Surrender" by Elvis Presley fails to get past "Walk Right Back" and peaks at #2. Cliff Richard's "The Young Ones" sneaks a week between Rock-A-Hula-Baby by Elvis and the Everly Brothers' last number one "Crying In The Rain".

It's been rather skewed, a lot of new entries but only one scheduled for next week and 7 for this week so I moved 3 of them across to balance it so next week we will see 4 new songs again although 3 of them would have been in this week.
The big news is the debut for Sam Cooke who enters at #6.

2 November 1957:
1 ( 1 ) Jailhouse Rock - Elvis Presley < 3rd week at #1 > 2 ( 3 ) You Send Me - Sam Cooke 3 ( 2 ) Wake Up Little Susie - Everly Brothers (#1[2]) 4 ( 7 ) Melodie D'Amour - Ames Brothers 5 ( -- ) Gotta Have Something In The Bank Frank - Frankie Vaughan & Kaye Sisters
6 ( 4 ) Good Evening Friends - Frankie Laine & Johnnie Ray (#3) 7 ( 6 ) Call Rosie On The Phone - Guy Mitchell (#6) 8 ( -- ) Alone (Why Must I Be Alone) - Shepherd Sisters 9 ( 5 ) Keep A Knockin' - Little Richard (#4) 10 ( -- ) Just Born (To Be Your Baby) - Perry Como
11 ( 8 ) Be My Girl - Jim Dale (#8) 12 ( 15 ) Silhouettes - Rays 13 ( 12 ) Got A Lot O' Livin' To Do - Elvis Presley (#12) 14 ( 17 ) My Personal Possession - Nat King Cole 15 ( 13 ) My Special Angel - Bobby Helms (#13)
16 ( 19 ) Little Bitty Pretty One - Thurston Harris 17 ( 11 ) Be-Bop Baby - Ricky Nelson (#11) 18 ( 10 ) (Let's Have A) Party - Elvis Presley (#8) 19 ( 9 ) Hula Love - Buddy Knox (#1[2]) 20 ( 14 ) Peanuts - Little Joe & The Thrillers (#14)
21 ( 21 ) Blue Blue Heartaches - Johnny Duncan & His Bluegrass Boys 22 ( -- ) April Love - Pat Boone 23 ( 20 ) Deep Purple - Billy Ward & His Dominoes (#20) 24 ( -- ) Trying To Get To You - Elvis Presley 25 ( 16 ) Lotta Lovin' - Gene Vincent (#3)
-- ( 18 ) Black Slacks - Joe Bennett & The Sparkletones (#9) -- ( 22 ) Passing Strangers - Billy Eckstine & Sarah Vaughan (#11) -- ( 23 ) You You Romeo - Shirley Bassey (#4) -- ( 24 ) Diana - Paul Anka (#1[5]) -- ( 25 ) Man On Fire - Frankie Vaughan (#20)
-- ( -- ) Loving You - Elvis Presley
Elvis remains at #1 with Sam Cooke only at #2. Although Elvis Presley is #1 at this point they are release a lot of his songs - in 1957 he had more UK hits than any artist in any year until it was equalled in 1992 and remember there may be some US hits too that were not UK hits. So "Trying To Get To You" just scrapes in whilst "Loving You" fails to make it and will not be put on any further playlists.
Frankie Vaughan also drops out after "Man On Fire" peaked only at #20 but in his song with the Kaye Sisters he gets a high entry at #5. This, like all his other hits, is a cover version but the original wasn't a US hit this time and its singer wasn't called Frank (Mr Sinatra has not recorded this song).
A different Frankie, Mr Valli, and his band did cover the next entry. Petula Clark also did and scored a bigger UK hit with it at the time that the one that has entered which was a hit in the USA.
There are some huge songs coming up in the next few weeks of November.

1957 is about to explode. For now Jailhouse Rock gets a 4th week at #1 keeping out Frankie Vaughan & The Kaye Sisters, with Sam Cooke denied. Paul Anka follows up "Diana" with not one but two entries in the same week. Of those "I Love You Baby" reached #3 in the UK.
Laurie London is only 13 at this point and he nearly became the first British artist to top the US chart. Actually he did reach #1 in some of the charts but not the one that is considered now the "Hot 100" which is the "Top 100 Hits", peaking at #2 (I think "Wake Up Little Susie" kept it off #1).

On this week Elvis Presley loses the top spot but has yet another new entry, this time a Christmas song, maybe a bit early on 16 November... the song I think may be Christmas #1 enters very close to Christmas and until then we are likely to see Jackie Wilson get to #1 but there is another classic coming in 2 weeks that could also sneak in some time. In 1986 "Reet Petite" reached NM #2 but it's almost certain that in its real year it will get to #1.
Chuck Berry gets an entry at #9 with his classic "Rock And Roll Music".

23 November 1957
1 ( 3 ) Reet Petite - Jackie Wilson < 1st #1 > 2 ( 1 ) Gotta Have Something In The Bank Frank - Frankie Vaughan & Kaye Sisters (#1[1]) 3 ( 9 ) Rock And Roll Music - Chuck Berry 4 ( 2 ) Jailhouse Rock - Elvis Presley (#1[4]) 5 ( 6 ) I Love You Baby - Paul Anka
6 ( 4 ) Alone (Why Must I Be Alone) - Shepherd Sisters (#4) 7 ( 7 ) Tell Me That You Love Me - Paul Anka 8 ( 14 ) Santa Bring My Baby Back To Me - Elvis Presley 9 ( 5 ) You Send Me - Sam Cooke (#2[1]) 10 ( -- ) Peggy Sue - Buddy Holly
11 ( 8 ) Just Born (To Be Your Baby) - Perry Como (#7) 12 ( -- ) Ma He's Making Eyes At Me - Johnny Otis Show 13 ( 15 ) I'm Available - Margie Rayburn 14 ( -- ) Chicago - Frank Sinatra 15 ( 10 ) Melodie D'Amour - Ames Brothers (#4)
16 ( 23 ) Raunchy - Bill Justis 17 ( 13 ) Silhouettes - Rays (#11) 18 ( -- ) Kisses Sweeter Than Wine - Jimmie Rodgers 19 ( 12 ) Good Evening Friends - Frankie Laine & Johnnie Ray (#3) 20 ( 11 ) Wake Up Little Susie - Everly Brothers (#1[2])
21 ( 19 ) Lawdy Miss Clawdy - Elvis Presley (#19) 22 ( 25 ) All The Way - Frank Sinatra 23 ( 16 ) My Personal Possession - Nat King Cole (#13) 24 ( 21 ) He's Got The Whole World In His Hands - Laurie London (#21) 25 ( -- ) Hey You - Tommy Steele

Note that in the UK "All The Way" and "Chicago" were jointly credited but in the USA "All The Way" was a hit by itself so that entered from there and "Chicago" from its UK entry. At least I think it was like that. Buddy Holly performs with the Crickets but some songs are credited to Buddy Holly, some to the Crickets (and often as Buddy Holly & The Crickets) because of a label issue.
We saw "Ma He's Making Eyes At Me" make an attempt to enter the chart in 1974 but failing to do so, not because it's bad song but partly because it's out of place in 1974 and partly because Lena Zavaroni was actually a terrible singer, rather screechy and maybe a cute 10-year-old girl but painful to listen to. I'm not supposed to offend her because she died young but sorry she was terrible. Johnny Otis Show sounds like it's a live performance but I read the audience was actually dubbed in. Even back in 1957 they had the technology to do that.

I told you it was going to be a great week, not just one but two classic rock and roll songs entering, Jerry Lee Lewis with his Great Balls Of Fire and the classic doo-wop hit for Danny & The Juniors.
The 3rd entry is the kind of thing you may hear at Lingovision and finish near the bottom other than the occasional person who likes this kind of thing but it isn't Haven enough. However it was good enough for the Pogues to sample it in Fiesta.

Winifred Atwell, the queen of piano-based medleys of old songs enters at #15 above Russ Conway who climbs to #17 with his own such version. In the future though Russ Conway will do new piano music and have more success.
December has far fewer songs than November had but there are 2 brilliant ones even in this month. They will come up.

14 December 1957:
1 ( 2 ) Great Balls Of Fire - Jerry Lee Lewis < 1st #1 > 2 ( 1 ) Reet Petite - Jackie Wilson (#1[3]) 3 ( 4 ) At The Hop - Danny & The Juniors 4 ( 6 ) Liechtensteiner Polka - Will Glahe 5 ( 3 ) Rock And Roll Music - Chuck Berry (#2[1])

-- ( 23 ) Alone (Why Must I Be Alone) - Shepherd Sisters (#4) -- ( 25 ) You Send Me - Sam Cooke (#2[1])
One song that reached UK #1 replaces another UK #1 at the top of my chart, however there is of course a difference. Great Balls Of Fire was #1 originally when released around this time (albeit a bit later due) whereas "Reet Petite" only reached #6 in the UK chart in 1957 but hit the top in 1986.
As "Peggy Sue" falls from #5 to #7 this week "Oh Boy" enters at #6, but they have different credits. I have considered keeping them all credited to Buddy Holly & The Crickets up until the point they did actually split. This is technically a cover version, Sonny West co-wrote it and recorded it as "All My Love" and it wasn't a success but he worked with Norman Petty who co-wrote it with him and Norman Petty also managed the Crickets so they got to record it.

-- ( 20 ) I Love You Baby - Paul Anka (#7) -- ( 24 ) Tell Me That You Love Me - Paul Anka (#13) -- ( 25 ) Jailhouse Rock - Elvis Presley (#1[4])
In general I consider the chart of 21 December rather than 28 December to be the Christmas chart, therefore Great Balls Of Fire is technically my Christmas #1 of 1957 as "Jingle Bell Rock" only just enters - would have been better had this entered about 2 weeks ago to get to #1 this week.

Jingle Bell Rock gets to #1 this week but expect it to have the shortest run so far for a #1. One of those seasonal things. And not even properly the Christmas #1, as that was last week's chart so Great Balls Of Fire was technically my Christmas #1 of 1957. Rock Around The Clock was in 1955 as I did have a few charts at the end of the year, and in 1956 Teresa Brewer was #1 at Christmas with "Mutual Admiration Society".
Both entries this week are by Ricky Nelson. The chart of the year will be compiled at the weekend (which actually starts tomorrow) and I will be listening to it (possibly in a random order).

I have my chart of the year now I will just post the top 50 in one go. This is all done based on points and doesn't reflect that fact that parts of the year are stronger than others, nor the fact that some songs are in the final chart and some were in the last chart of 1956, but only the 52 weeks of 1957 count

As with the UK chart then "Diana" is the top single of the year. It actually beat "Forgotten Dreams" by about 3.6 points - i.e. virtually nothing between them. "Forgotten Dreams" was originally recorded in 1954 but not released as a single then, but "Ain't That A Shame" was released as a single in 1955 and then re-released after he found success, with Pat Boone having had a hit cover of that song previously.
Meanwhile Elvis Presley is yet again artist of the year with Jailhouse Rock coming out on top although it was only 4 weeks at #1 compared to 5 for All Shook Up.
The Everly Brothers made an impressive start to their career with 2 number ones.

Not a good year for female vocals. Only Teresa Brewer as the year started and the Kaye Sisters on Frankie Vaughan's number one as a chart-topper, Alma Cogan got to #2 a couple of times with Betty Johnson and later #2s for Teresa Brewer, Patti Page and Debbie Reynolds.
All the new #1s of 1957 had male vocals other than "Forgotten Dreams" which is an instrumental.

I didn't compile 1957 list, but possibly "Gotta Have Something In The Bank Frank" is my # 1.

Suprisingly you didn't say anything about original "Nora Malone" on that week, when Teresa Brewer's cover was entered in your chart.
