I come from the era of the 70s and 80s where most songs climbed to their peak position, occasional songs entered at #1 usually by well-established artists.
First week peaks happened but were rare and only normally for very well known established artists too.
As I started doing my charts in the late 70s I followed the kind of pattern of the UK chart at the time and have stuck by it ever since as that is how I felt charts should be, but climbing also has the practicality of "being sure" about the song that gets to #1.
In my whole chart history only 2 acts have debuted at #1. In my retro chart The Doors in 1967 with "Light My Fire". I was clearly very familiar with the song when I set out doing retro charts. In the "live" era Cornershop with "Brimful Of Asha (Norman Cook remix)" in 1998 which had got much airplay beforehand.
Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer was very close to debuting at #1 for Christmas 2012 but entered at #2 behind Dropkick Murphys who entered at #1 that week. In that case there was obviously a rush to get the song to its peak by Christmas. Dropkick Murphys had had 2 previous hits in my chart. The following week both held their positions while Tich debuted at #3. I had actually been predicting Tich may have debuted at #1. The following year Tich herself entered at #1 with "Love On Christmas Eve".
Prosecco Soclalist was the last song ever to enter my chart at #1 with "This Dog's Just For Christmas (Not For Life)". Although that name hadn't been in my chart before it was Dave Rotheray from the Beautiful South who had had hits before, and vocalist Eleanor McEvoy had also previously reached my chart so it wasn't a proper debut as such. And once again, a Christmas song which had to enter high to maximise its potential for Christmas.
