I feel after listening to Roundtable we need to talk about this. youtu.be/9CAz_vvsK9MLet's start by saying like others I found this very disappointing but it is started to grow on me. Is this a throwaway song to say Strokes are back and the next song will be a blinder or is this the most commercial track on a very weird record that is on it's way. I think it is the first, they know bands don't have hits anymore so why release a blinder when it won't go top 10 anymore anyway. What do others think?

I think its disappointing, hugely so, the intro could've been made up by a 7 year old messing about on a keyboard for the first time, the vocals are too loud which just emphasises the fact Julian Casablancas doesn't have the voice to do electro ballads, what's the vocodar about? Why so abstract? Where are the guitars? I dont mind an artist experimenting but everyone seems to be going the same route musically, Hayley Williams of Paramore, Papa Roach, Swim Deep, The Strokes, Imagine Dragons, Bring Me To The Horizon with Ludens, Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay and long before all the Radiohead.
It's so predictable, I'm actually surprised when an established rock band come out with a new rock album these days and I bet they think it's new and creative and inventive, honest I could just throw it all away, I couldn't say if they are saving their best songs for later or they have disappeared up their own arse, I suspect the latter

At least most of those artists include a hook, Strokes haven't

I've always regarded The Strokes as an Emperor New Clothes over-hyped act recycling the Velvet Underground (circa Loaded album) meets Television clothing. I think this is the best thing they have ever done by a very long way indeed. So I'm very pumped up for their futuristic Sci-Fi concept album The New Abnormal produced by Rick Rubin out on 5th April.
But hey I'm Radiohead fan who thought Arctic Monkeys AM album was overrated and I rate Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino album as their best of their career. And what Liam Gallagher has released since Oasis has split has largely bored me to tears whilst I've mostly loved the experimentation of Noel Gallagher's efforts. Whilst as a Radio 6 Music listener I'd much rather have my Radio stuck on Radio 1 or Radio 2 than be forced to listen to the Dad Rock on Radio X.

I agree with your last statement, I listen to more Radio 1 than any other station, 16 hours of Radio 1 agaisnt about 2 hours of 6! and 50 minutes of radio 2 each week. I loved The Strokes debut though, it was an antidote to the New Acoustic Movement shudder at the time and never been a huge Arctic Monkeys fan anyway take each song and record as they come.
But you must really hate Strokes to think this is the best they have done, even 'Taken For A Fool' of the last record wipes the floor with it never mind 12:51, Modern Age or Reptilia

Franz Ferdinand are another one to ditch fun, melodic feel good music with big hooks for boring, forgettable electronic dirge aimed at people going through a midlife crisis
