HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 7th FEBRUARY 1988

The deadlock at the top of the chart is broken and it’s Taylor Dayne who emerges victorious after her divorce from Deacon Blue.





Dignity was top for most of the week, helped enormously by topping five individual charts, however it couldn’t quite match the wider appeal of Tell It To My Heart, which stole the chart crown at the very end.

Both songs are still growing in points, and with still just a tiny margin separating them, we could even see a reunion at number one.

After being prematurely displaced at the top, Tiffany refuses to budge as I Think We’re Alone Now holds steady at number three.

T’Pau are back with their third Top Five hit in just six months as Valentine rises to number four. It comes hot on the heels of Heart and Soul, which peaked at number two last August and their massive chart-topper, China In Your Hand, our fourth biggest song of 1987.

Australian singer and actress Kylie Minogue has rocketed up the Official Chart over the last few weeks and is poised to take over at the top. She can’t quite match that success here, I Should Be So Lucky does move into the Top Five though.

There’s a massive climb of 24 places for OMD this week as Dreaming becomes this week’s biggest mover, up to number 11.

Joint highest new entries are from Aztec Camera and George Harrison as How Men Are and When We Was Fab both enter at number 15.

1988 was the first year for GCSE examinations, with O-Levels and CSE’s having been scrapped the previous year. I can remember a confused and disorganised approach as we moved more towards a more project and coursework based assessment.  The teachers seemed to know as little of what was expected as we did.


A lot of us had become demotivated and disinterested in the chaos and run-up to exams. Our French teacher took to playing Joe Le Taxi at the start of each lesson, and got us to work on a translation of it. It helped to break the monotony of the lessons and certainly re-focused my attention on the subject. I think I got a D grade in mock exams but a B in the final exam, so thanks for the help Vanessa!  I've never used my GCSE French since but reckon I could still get away with ordering a croque-monsieur or two if ever my life depended on it!
