I enjoyed doing the 2019 Album Reviews so this is returning for 2020 now we have a few albums to be going at, in 2019 I listened to 40/50 more albums than I usually would and I really enjoyed most, what struck me was the quality of the album tracks that I would normally overlook so I'm happy to continue the format in 2020.

BLOSSOMS - Foolish Loving SpacesRelease date: January 31, 2020Blossoms released their third album, Foolish Loving Spaces on the 31st of January 2020. The album was preceded by the singles “Your Girlfriend”, "The Keeper" and "If You Think This Is Real Life" and went to number 1 in the UK album charts, their second record to do so after their debut self titled album back in 2016. The Stockport retro rockers are still being produced by James Skelly from The Coral which I think is a great move, they do have a similar sound, I have loved both their albums so far so lets give this one listen. 1. If You Think This Is Real Life 10 2. Your Girlfriend 9.5 3. The Keeper 9 4. My Swimming Brain 7.5 5. Sunday Was a Friend of Mine 8.5 6. Oh No (I Think I'm in Love) 8.5 7. Romance, Eh? 8 8. My Vacant Days 6.5 9. Falling for Someone 7 10. Like Gravity 8
SummaryFoolish Loving Spaces is a very airwave friendly and highly commercial record and there is nothing wrong with that, the band have grown into a fantastic retro 70's style pop band from a time before pop was a dirty word amongst fans of "real artists", I personally love the crossover appeal, the Stockport five-piece have carved their own niche in modern music, they even look like they come straight from the '70s, with flares, fitted shirts and shoulder-length hair. Frontman Tom said he spent a summer listening to three records Talking Heads’ ‘Stop Making Sense’, U2’s ‘The Joshua Tree’ and ‘Screamadelica’ by Primal Scream and they planted the seeds of inspiration behind ‘Foolish Loving Spaces’ and you can hear the inspiration, one criticism you could level at Blossoms over the years is their songs often sound a bit samey but I think they have mixed it up quite well with this album, taking inspiration from all different sources whilst unmistakably still sounding like the Blossoms I love, this will take some beating 8.25/10

POPPY - I DisagreeRelease Date: January 10, 2020Poppy is the shape-shifting alter ego of Boston-born Moriah Rose Pereira, she became well known for her weird youtube videos talking to plants and acting like a robot, she was always a musician even before the Poppy persona so it is no surprise she is now having a relatively successful music career, over her three albums she has slowly progressed from bubble gum pop to electro rock to metal, not he natural progression but here we are. This is her third album and the first for her new label Sumerian Records who are known for releasing heavier music, I Disagree has been described as a heavy metal, pop, pop-metal, electropop, industrial rock, nu metal, hard rock and industrial record, which uses elements of art rock, dubstep, progressive metal, thrash metal, rock, dream pop, alt-pop, acoustic pop and J-pop so quite the mixed bag. 1. Concrete 9.5 2. I Disagree 8.5 3. Bloodmoney 8 4. Anything Like Me 7 5. Fill the Crown 8.5 6. Nothing I Need 6 7. Sit / Stay 7 8. Bite Your Teeth 6 9. Sick of the Sun 8 10. Don't Go Outside 8
SummaryI Disagree combines Japanese kawaii metal, whispery vocals, bubble gum pop and dark themes, take opening track "Concrete" for example as sirens howl in the background Poppy whispers "Bury me six feet deep, cover me in concrete, turn me into a street", then the most metal riff your going to hear in 2020 interrupts her but only briefly before your transported into a hellish children's tv show sing along chorus as Poppy sweetly sings "Break me off a piece of that tasty treat, sugar in my teeth, demons in my dreams watch me while I sleep for eternity, think Billie Eilish gone hair metal. It sets the tone for a dark at times heavy post genre ride, “Sit/Stay” borrows liberally from Nine Inch Nails, especially the With Teeth era, but this isn't all heavy, the album ends with the hazy, reverb-soaked guitars of "Sick of the Sun" and don't go outside is part dreamy pop song/part rock opera, a great album to start 2020 7.65/10

VANT - Conceived In The Sky
Release Date: January 10, 2020London rock band Vant broke onto the scene with a string of high tempo, guitar heaving indie/punk rock crossover songs in 2015, by the time their debut album came out in early 2017 they had released 7 singles from that album and were onto EP Talk Like Thunder which also came out in 2017, a huge tour supported the album but late in 2017 they announced their "indefinite hiatus", fast forward to 2020 and Vant is very much a Mattie Vant solo project, from the three singles released throughout 2019 this sounds a lot more electronic which is what I expected after he lost he rest of the band. 1. On My Way Through 7 2. Mary Don't Mind 8 3. Around for the Aesthetic N/A 4. Lie to Myself 4 5. Best Friends 7 6. Exoskeleton 8 7. Propaganda Machine 7.5 8. He Just Wants to f*** with Us N/A 9. Thank Lucifer 7 10. Photographic Head 7 11. La La La Blow My Brains out 5 12. Atlas Falling 7 13. Give Up (Morrissey's Racist) 7SummaryVANT was way better as a band rather than a solo project. That first album was a great, this is very average. There are a few highlights though with Exoskeleton and Mary Don't Mind the stand out songs on the album and singles "Thank Lucifer" and "Propaganda Machine" were decent without being brilliant but the album as a whole is lacking the punch of their debut album and has no killer singles, its just a bit bland and has a few too many mis-steps with several needless tracks that are less than a minute long, two of which were too short to rate and the disaster that is track Lie to Myself means I can only give the record a 6.77/10

TENNIS - SwimmerRelease Date: February 14, 2020The release of "Swimmer" marks the 10th anniversary of the duo's marriage as well as the tenth year of their career so of course they drop their new album on valentines day. For those who aren't aware of Tennis, they are an American indie pop band from Colorado, United States, made up of husband-and-wife duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley that make some of the best modern pop music and from what I have heard this could be their masterpiece. 1. I'll Haunt You 7.5 2. Need Your Love 8.5 3. How to Forgive 8.5 4. Runner 9 5. Echoes 8 6. Swimmer 7 7. Tender as a Tomb 7 8. Late Night 7 9. Matrimony II 8
SummaryThis really is the perfect dinner party album, every track is warm and welcoming with layers of shimmering guitars, slightly lo-fi at times and definitely a throwback to pop music of the 60's and 70's. Whilst there are plenty of dreamlike vocals here the content is a lot darker with death being a recurrent theme on the album and is subtly referenced to in almost every song here, because of that they never really go into obviously sickly sweet love song territory. Words can't do this album justice, every time I listen to the album I like it more, it is one you will just have to listen to starting with singles "Need Your Love" and "How to Forgive" both released in last month 7.77/10

SPANISH LOVE SONGS - Brave Faces Everyone
Release Date: February 7, 2020LA emo rockers Spanish Love Songs are back with new album "Brave Faces Everyone" and the California-based band continue to find joy in misery, following on from their 2018’s sophomore album "Schmaltz" the band return with their third full length album, which was conceived whilst touring their last record "Schmaltz", it might not reinvent the wheel but Spanish Love Songs cover real issues such as politics, depression, addiction, the opioid crisis and heartbreak in their unmistakable emo style, singles "Kick" and "Losers, Pt. 2" were both good and this album has been getting some big hype. 1. Routine Pain 8 2. Self Destruction (As a Sensible Career Choice) 8 3. Generation Loss 7.5 4. Kick 8.5 5. Beach Front Property 7.5 6. Losers 8.5 7. Optimism (As a Radical Life Choice) 7.5 8. Losers, Pt. 2 8 9. Dolores 7 10. Brave Faces, Everyone 9
Summary"Brave Faces Everyone" is a great collection of the bands now trademark self-depreciating brand of emo tinged garage punk. The depression that our protagonist faces on this album is caused by a combination of things that the real world throws at us which at times can feel relentless, loss of employment, substance abuse, injustice, the death of a loved one or friend with opening track “Routine Pain” documenting how they are going to destroy themselves with alcohol. But this isn't a depressing album, it is more about finding your place in a world that may feel hopeless and at times confusing, lyrical the delivery is fantastic, the instrumentals are very well put together and the album as a whole sounds raw 7.95/10

SLS are one of my favourite discoveries of the year so far (I hadn’t heard of them before 2020), and this is a great write-up. Both ‘Kick’ and ‘Losers, Pt 2’ have reached the top 5 of my singles chart.

Both ‘Kick’ and ‘Losers, Pt 2’ have reached the top 5 of my singles chart. Really is a fantastic album, "Losers" part 1 and closing track "Brave Faces, Everyone" are brilliant too, they remind me a lot of a mor angsty version of The Menzingers who I review last year

GREEN DAY - Father of All...
Release Date: February 7, 2020Father of All Motherf*ckers (also known by the censored form Father of All...) is the thirteenth studio album by American rock band Green Day and went straight to #1 in the UK. According to lead vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong, the album is "The New! soul, Motown, glam and manic anthemic for Punks, freaks and punishers!" He would also state that the lyrics are about "the life AND death of the party" and the "lifestyle of not giving a f***." and with a running time of 26 minutes and 12 seconds, it is Green Day's shortest album so shouldn't take long to digest. 1. Father of All... 9 2. Fire, Ready, Aim 8.5 3. Oh Yeah! 7.5 4. Meet Me on the Roof 9.5 5. I Was a Teenage Teenager 7 6. Stab You in the Heart 7.5 7. Sugar Youth 7 8. Junkies on a High 6.5 9. Take the Money and Crawl 7.5 10. Graffitia 7.5Summary90% of the comments I have seen ever since the first single dropped don't seem to get that they are being ironic, the band say they are this bad ass life changing reincarnation of rock then write songs in falsetto about "Sleeping with their pillow", claim they are about the "lifestyle of not giving a f***" then censor the album title!, whilst plastering their album cover with unicorns barfing rainbows! and to top it off smack bang in the middle rip off Elvis Presley with an Achy Breaky Heart jam, they even rip off one of their own songs "She's a Rebel" on "Sugar Youth " howay, all the "critics" giving this 0 out of 10 because its a stale cliché miss the point entirely, it was meant to be! I love it, my favourite track is current single "Meet Me on the Roof" which is a 60s throwback with Doo-wop swing to it. 7.75/10

DUNE RATS - Hurry Up and Wait Release date: January 31, 2020Hurry Up and Wait is the third studio album by Australian garage rock/pop punk band Dune Rats. Lead singer Danny Beus said "We didn't set out to make a big album, or a polished album, or an album about partying because the last one did alright, or an album not about partying because we want to get away from that. It's just writing about different stuff in our lives. It was always just going to be Dunies." The Australian trio recently hit the #1 spot for ARIA Australian Artist Albums a few days ago with Hurry Up and Wait so they are getting some love back home. 1. Intro N/A 2. Bobby D 7.5 3. Rubber Arm 8.5 4. No Plans 8 5. Rock Bottom 7 6. Crazy 8 7. Patience 7 8. Bad Habits 7 9. Stupid Is as Stupid Does (featuring K. Flay) 8.5 10. If My Bong Could Talk 7 11. The Skids 6.5 12. Mountains Come and Go But Aussie Pub Rock Lives On (Forever) 6
SummaryTheir 12-track album starts with a bit of a sketchy answering machine message but quickly jumps into Bobby D which is a frantic pop punk number, singles "Rubber Arm" and "No Plans" are next, so far a great start, Dune Rats are not too dissimilar to the sound of Blink 182, they are also a lot of fun with their happy-go-lucky lyrics and Aussie twang, their isn't a great deal of substance lyrically, its all about DIY parties, bad habits, bongs and board shorts but there are plenty of power chords and angsty lyrics, it's exactly the album you would expect from a group of young Aussie stoners. 7.36/10

BEST COAST - Always TomorrowRelease date: February 21, 2020Always Tomorrow is the fourth studio album by American rock duo Best Coast, It is the band's first studio album in five years. The singles "For the First Time" and "Everything Has Changed" preceded the album's release. Bethany Cosentino said that after finishing the California Nights album and touring commitments, she felt "creatively paralyzed. I couldn't write music. There was so much bubbling inside of me, so many things happening, so much to process, but I couldn't get any of it out", and believed "nothing was ever going to change". She later forced herself to write, coming up with the song "Everything Has Changed", and has called the album "the story of where I was and where I am now, as well as the struggles I am still learning to identify and figure out. This album is about leaving the darkness for the light, but still understanding that nothing is ever going to be perfect." 1. Different Light 92. Everything Has Changed 9.5 3. For the First Time 7.5 4. Graceless Kids 7.5 5. Wreckage 8 6. Rollercoaster 7 7. Master of My Own Mind 7.5 8. True 7 9. Seeing Red 7.5 10. Make It Last 7 11. Used to Be 6.5
SummaryBest Coast emerged in 2010 as the face of Californian slacker rock, writing songs about weed, their cat and being lazy but 10 years later they have outlasted their beach-bum peers, in 2014 frontwoman Bethany Cosentino featured on Weezer track Go Away which is when I discovered them, the band have listed them as one of their main influences along with 90s California pop punk. The 60s surf rock infused songs still remain but they have grown as a band over the years, Everything Has Changed and Different Light are fantastic pop punk songs and Seeing Red is about a confusing and troubled break up so their is deep content here but as a whole this album sees Best Coast at their most content 7.63/10

PET SHOP BOYS - HotspotRelease date: January 24, 2020Hotspot is the fourteenth studio album by English synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys, released on 24 January 2020 by the band's own label x2, It is supported by the singles "Dreamland" featuring Years & Years, which was released on 11 September 2019, and "Burning the Heather", which was released alongside the album announcement on 14 November 2019. The album charted in numerous countries and reached No. 3 of the album charts in the United Kingdom, Germany and Spain. The album was primarily recorded at Hansa Studios in Berlin where the duo have written "most of [their] music over the last ten years", with the exception of "Burning the Heather", which was recorded at RAK Studios in London, where Bernard Butler contributed guitar to the track. The duo's website dubbed it the last of a trilogy of albums produced by Stuart Price, beginning with Electric in 2013 1. Will-o-the-wisp 7 2. You are the one 6 3. Happy people 8 4. Dreamland (featuring Years & Years) 9 5. Hoping for a miracle 7 6. I don't wanna 7.5 7. Monkey business 6.5 8. Only the dark 7.5 9. Burning the heather 8.5 10. Wedding in Berlin 6.5
SummaryPet Shop Boys have always been hit and miss with me, I'm more of a casual PSB fan that only checks out their singles. There were three songs that stood out by a mile on Hotspot, "Burning the Heather" featuring Bernard Butler on guitar which is a nice slow burner, the upbeat, 00's sounding Dreamland featuring Years & Years and the euphoric 90s euro-house banger "Happy people", its just a bit too electronic for me at times but the poppier moments are a joy 7.35/10

THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA - Aeromantic
Release date: February 28, 2020The Night Flight Orchestra are a Swedish rock band from Helsingborg that make brilliant retro throwback rock with a pop twist, they are hard to describe but imagine ELO mixed with ABBA which is mad considering they were formed by former members of metal band Soilwork! Björn “Speed” Strid on vocals and David Andersson on guitar. I discovered them in 2018 when they released their fourth album "Sometimes the World Ain't Enough" which is an absolute masterpiece, they made their debut at #21 in my chart with "Can't Be That Bad", then in 2019 stand along singles Satellite peaked at #11 and Cabin Pressure Drops at #54, then this year from their new album, Divinyls #6 and Transmissions #32 (and climbing) have done well in my chart so I'm looking forward to listening to this one because every track on their criminally underrated 2018 album was an absolute banger. 1. Servants Of The Air 8 2. Divinyls 9.5 3. If Tonight Is Our Only Chance 8.5 4. This Boy's Last Summer 8.5 5. Curves 7 6. Transmissions 9 7. Aeromantic 8 8. Golden Swansdown 8 9. Taurus 8.5 10. Carmencita Seven 7.5 11. Sister Mercurial 8 12. Dead Of Winter 7
SummaryThe classic 70s and 80s rock is complemented by moments of pop brilliance on Aeromantic, "If Tonight Is Our Only Chance" could be a cover of a long lost classic Abba song and Diynyls is everything the Night Flight Orchestra are all about all wrapped up in a glorious three and a half minute pop song and Golden Swansdown is a nod to Elton John so there is real variety here. All their songs are unique and yet they are structured to lead into one another effortlessly, the album just flows from one song to the next, if you like nostalgic, synth-heavy, Pop-infused 70s Rock mixed with 80s Electronic music then you have stumbled upon the right band to check out next 8.12/10

DEAD STARS - Never Not Here
Release date: February 21, 2020Dead Stars are a heavy fuzz pop band from Brooklyn, New York formed by Jeff Moore, Jaye Moore and John Watterberg, having spent nearly a decade crafting jangly, fuzzed-out indie-pop with a healthy dose of ’90s nostalgia, Dead Stars took a break following 2017’s ‘Perfect Patterns,’ but they weren't away long spending the best part of 2019 writing and recording their new record "Never Not Here". Second single "Hold My Breath" sits at #12 in my current chart so with the album fresh off the press why not give this one a listen next. 1. Dreams Don't Come True 7.5 2. Hold My Breath 9 3. Cool Summer 7 4. Every Someday 7 5. February Ghost 6.5 6. Always Down 5.5 7. Wake Up 7.5 8. Story of Your Life 7 9. Drone On 7 10. Would It Be so Bad 8 11. Missing Things 7 12. Starve 6.5
SummaryDead Stars walk this tightrope between reimagined grunge and power-pop, balancing heavy riffs with the melodic nature of the songs and they don't venture far away from their fuzzed up grunge rock sound and as a result a lot of the album is pretty samey, there are a few huge guitar pop rockers on here though "Hold My Breath" and "Would It Be so Bad" are both great tracks but not quite enough to get too excited about 7.12/10

MYSTERY JETS - A Billion Heartbeats
Release date: April 3, 2020Billion Heartbeats is the seventh studio album by English indie rock band Mystery Jets and might just be their best to date based on the quality of the singles so far and there have been plenty, an original release date of 27 September 2019 was planned but unfortunately, on 17 September 2019, the band announced the postponement of the album's release and tour due to the hospitalisation of singer Blaine Harrison 1. Screwdriver 9.5 2. Petty Drone 9 3. History Has Its Eyes On You 8.5 4. A Billion Heartbeats 9 5. Endless City 6 6. Hospital Radio 9 7. Cenotaph 7.5 8. Campfire Song 8 9. Watching Yourself Slowly Disappear 7 10. Wrong Side Of The Tracks 8
SummaryLead singer Blaine Harrison says of the song, “Screwdriver’ is about the mechanics of intolerance. Looking back at times of economic instability in history, we see how easily deep chasms grow in society and the population seeks change wherever it is most convincingly promised. “Conflict arises as cultures and belief systems clash, unwilling to accept one another’s place in society, because we are fed the rhetoric that our neighbours are those responsible for our problems: then inevitably nationalism once more raises its ugly head above the parapet. But whereas political agendas fuel divisiveness, music unites and reminds us of all that we have in common. The message of Screwdriver is not a pessimistic one – because perhaps faced with confrontation we can find understanding, and even maybe learn how to listen to, and love one another.” and I think that sums up the album too quite nicely 8.15/10

THE SNUTS - Mixtape EPRelease date: March 13, 2020Scottish foursome The Snuts are gaining traction in all the right places, ridiculously huge sold-out gigs in their homeland, festival sets aplenty and massive indie tunes spreading like wildfire online, they were one of the main bands I was looking forward to seeing over the festival season. Mixtape EP isn't quite an album but it is a good collection of their releases so far... 1. Fatboy Slim 8.5 2. Interlude 1 N/A 3. Coffee & Cigarettes 8.5 4. Interlude 2 N/A 5. All Your Friends 6.5 6. Interlude 3 N/A 7. Boardwalk 7 8. Interlude 4 N/A 9. Don't Forget It (Punk) 7.5SummaryThe band continue their rapid rise in 2020 with their dance-pit anthem Fatboy Slim and the release of their brand-new Mixtape EP on Parlophone Records, latest single Coffee & Cigarettes is the highlight of the EP for me and is reminiscent of mid 00's indie at its best, not a great deal to review with all the short interludes but from what I have heard we have the makings of a new band worth watching 7.6/10
